SQL Server cluster and rolling DDL upgrades

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 24, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

Is it possible to perform rolling or online DDL upgrades to SQL DB either clustered or mirrored? Can anyone provide a list of steps or guide me to some documentation?

SQL Server 2005 - Installation in Cluster Environment - "Service SQL Server Browser (SQLBrowser) fai

Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition SP2 32-bit All updates and patches installed Two-node cluster environment configured. Cluster functions perfectly. Trying to install SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition (32-bit) as a clustered application. Installation proceeds fine until it begins to install the SQL Server Database Services product. Status window says "Starting Services. Service: SQL Server Browser". Error message is presented: "Service 'SQL Server Browser' (SQLBrowser) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services". SQL Server Service Account is in the Administrators group on both local systems, and is a domain account. Account used for the installation is in the Administrators group on both local systems, and is a domain account. Have cancelled out of the install and rebooted both servers numerous times. Exact same error continues to occur. Cluster is active and all resources are owned by node #1 - the node where SQL Server Installation is being run. In the event viewer, I see: Event ID: 10 Description: The SQLBrowser service was unable to establish SQL instance and connectivity discovery". I am also seeing errors like: Source: SQLBrowser. The SQL configuration for SQL is inaccessible or invalid. Source: SQLBrowser. The Configuration of the AdminConnection\TCP protocol in the SQL instance xxxxxx i

Any issues removing backup mount point cluster resources from SQL Server dependencies?

Win 2003, SQL 2005/SQL2008 64 bit enterprise failover cluster with 3 nodes and 6 instances. The mount points configured as cluster resources for the data/backup/logs. The entire cluster mount points are SAN replicated to a DR Site. But backup drives/LUNs are excluded from the replication. All the disk resources including backup LUNs are set to dependencies on the SQL Server server. The SQL Server is not coming on-line in the DR Site due to unavailability of the backup LUNs (failed resources). As per the documentation all the disk resources must be set to dependencies (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/835185). Thought it did not specifically mentions only Data/Log mount points and/or the backup LUNs as well. "The SQL Server 2005 resource depends on the SQL network name resource and the physical disk resources that hold its data. When mount points are being used together with the physical disks, each mount point must appear as a cluster resource. Additionally, each mount point must also be added as a SQL Server dependency. If only the root physical disks dependency is added and the mount points are not added, database corruption will occur on failover. Database corruption may also occur when SQL Server is restarted without failing over. "     What if I remove the backup LUNs from dependencies list. This will allow me to recover the SQL Server

SQL Server 2008 Agent Fails to start in a Win 2008 Cluster

When I try to bring SQLAGENT Online, I get the following errors: EventID:53 [sqagtres] StartResourceService: Failed to start SQLSERVERAGENT service.  CurrentState: 1 [sqagtres] OnlineThread: ResUtilsStartResourceService failed (status 435) [sqagtres] OnlineThread: Error 435 bringing resource online.   I just did a fresh SQL Cluster install as well.  When I installed the cluster, the service account was good to go.  I cant figure out what is going on.  SQL Server Engine starts fine.  Any ideas?

SQL Server Agent not listed as cluster resource

Hello everyone, thanks for any help on this issue.  I have recently installed SQL 2008 R2 on a Server 2008 R2 machine cluster.  We ran the advanced cluster prep and completion.  I have SQL Server up and running properly and failing over between nodes.  In the failover cluster manager, when I select SQL Server, I do not have the SQL Server Agent listed under other resources.  When I try to start the Agent from the SQL Configuration Manager it fails with an event 103 and I've found several notes on this error but I am figuring the root issue is that there isn't a cluster resource for the Agent. Is it possible to create the resource for the Agent? I have run a repair and I have tried to use add a resource, generic service, sql agent but it fails when I attempt to bring it online. Thanks again for any help on this. Mike

named instance sql server 2008 install on cluster

I have a production two-node cluster with sql server 2008 sp1 cu7 running over windows server 2008 sp2. If I were to install a new named instance on this live environment, would it impair the default sql server instance functionality? I'm not referring to processor/io while the install is in progress. My question specifically is would the install process by its nature bring down the default instance. I'm pretty sure it won't, but don't see any documentation that would confirm this. thanks.

Adding second node to SQL Server cluster fails.

I have successfully created a MSCS cluster and I have the SQL cluster up and running on the first node.   When I put the install cd in the second node and go through the install it fails with the error SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:  Object reference not set to an instance of an object. I'm assuming I get this error because on the cluster node configuration screen the "cluster network name" box is blank.   It won't let me select a name or type a name. The SQL cluster is up and running on the first node.   I can ping the sql cluster network name from both boxes.   The setup shows the installed node and the node I"m trying to add, so I don't see any problem. I have Windows 2008 R2 on both nodes and I'm installing SQL Server 2008 R2.   Any idea how I can get past this error?    Thank you.

SQL server 2008 failover cluster install

Hello all, Looking for the definitive answer with supporting documentation (link). Does a SQL server 2008 cluster have to be installed as or run as a domain service account or can local accounts be used?  I looked for a document that stated yes or no and could not find one. If anyone can provide info it would be much appreciated. Have all ready looked at these 2 links of interest. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143504.aspx#Service_SID http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731002(WS.10).aspx Thanks in advance,

Validating cluster resource: SQL Server and SQL Server Agent services

SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on a Windows Server 2008 R2 2-node cluster. Cluster validation wizard warns for SQL Server and SQL Server Agent services: This resource is configured to run in a separate monitor. By default, resources are configured to run in a shared monitor. This setting can be changed manually to keep it from affecting or being affected by other resources. It can also be set automatically by the failover cluster. If a resource fails it will be restarted in a separate monitor to try to reduce the impact on other resources if it fails again. This value can be changed by opening the resource properties and selecting the 'Advanced Policies' tab. There is a check-box 'run this resource in a separate Resource Monitor'. "Should" SQL Server and SQL Server Agent services run in shared (default) or separate monitors in this environment?
