Upgrading from 2008 to 2008R2

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 24, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

We have very few and simple tabular reports in report manager. We are upgrading from 2008 to 2008R2. After the upgradation do I need to deploy the reports allover again ? Data Sources are encrypted with user credentials in 2008. After upgradation will these encryption fail ? After upgradation are there any chances that reports might fail ?

Post Upgade task, Upgrading SSIS Pacakges to SQL Server 2008.

Hi, I am trying to upgrade sql 2005 packages to sql 2008 after doing in-place upgrade of DE and SSIS. Can I know what packageformat column in msdb.dbo.sysssispackages refer to, as according to http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc879336.aspx the value should be 2 if the package is in sql 2005 and it should be 3 if it is upgraded. But I am seeing only 0 or 1.   Can I know any other method to figure out version of the ssis packages? I am having issues upgrading SSIS Packages from 2005 to 2008, using SSIS package upgrade wizard.   Thanks for your help. Regards, KRanp.

Upgrading to SharePoint 2010 Foundation on SBS Server 2008

Hi all, I've just tried to install SharePoint Foundation on 2010 on Windows Small Business Server 2008 and whilst the literature I've found suggests that this is supported, I receive the following error: SharePoint 2010 Products cannot be installed in Stand-alone mode on a Domain Controller.  For more information on upgrading, see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=975805. What's funny about the KB ID, is that it doesn't exist.  The pre-requisites for SharePoint 2010 Foundation installed OK and the SharePoint installer has detected that it will perform an in-place upgrade.  the STSADM -o preupgradecheck output is below. Any idea's?  It would be really great if we could start using the shared workspace and ribbon features that are inherent with SPF2010. Jason.

Upgrading from sql 2005 to sql 2008

I have a general question: I'm upgrading from sql 2005 SP 2 x64 on Windows 2003 R2 SP2 to sql 2008 SP1. Disks are directly attached, (no SAN).  Can I detach my user databases first, run the upgrade, then re-attach?  Is it faster that way? Are there any dangers in doing that?  Also, you'd think it would make recovering from a failed upgrade easier since they reside on a separate drive and will still be 2005 database files.  I could re-install sql 2005 and re-attach them since they never were touched by the upgrade.

upgrading to sql 2008 x64 from sql 2005 x86

Over the next couple of days I need to preform a sql server upgrade on our Dynamics server and normally this wouldn't be a problem but I am currently running 32 bit sql 2005 on the machine that I plan to install sql 2008 64 bit standard edition onto. Can I do an "in place upgrade" over the existing installation? It is the default installation (MSSQLSERVER). I wasn't sure if this would be possible for me to do or not since I am doing the 32/64 bit jump. Or do I need to uninstall sql 2005 from the machine entirely and then put on 2008? I am hoping someone has been down this road before because I'm trying to plan out the quickest path to get this accomplished. Thanks in advance for any help!

SQL server 2008R2 install on a server 2008 R2 failover cluster. Other resources won't failover to o

As the subject says, I've built a fresh install w2k8r2 and sql2k8r2 failover cluster. Sql works fine on the primary node, but when I test a failover it breaks. Specifically, if I were to stop the node1 cluster service (causing the cluster to switch to node2), windows changes the cluster DNS appropriatly and moves the shared storage just fine, but sql server doesn't failover.  Server Name, Disk Drives and Other Resources all go offline. I've verified that the advanced policies of the server name, IP, cluster drives all have both nodes checked as possible owners However, Other resources only lists node1 as a possible owner and there appears to be no way to add node2.  Under the Other resources, SQL Server and SQL Server Agent are listed. I'm sorta stumped, I've been combing the forums and have found similar issues, but nothing seems to explain why the two resources won't failover.

Problem while upgrading from SQL 2008 Eval to SQL 2008 R2

Hi everyone, i'm trying to upgrade our SQL cluster from an Eval. version to a 2008R2 version.

During the setup i have this alert which makes the installation abort:

Cluster_FeatureDownGradeCheck Checks whether the edition of the selected SQL Server instance is supported in this SQL Server edtion downgrade scenario. Failed The edition of the selected SQL Server instance is not supported in this SQL Server edition downgrade scenario.

It's weird because we are not downgrading.... what should i check or fix?

Thank you!

ReportingServices will not start after 2008 to 2008R2 upgrade

Hello, A server was recently upgraded to 2008R2 from 2008. Before upgrade reportingservices was running. After upgrade, I cannot start ReportingServices from rsconfig, I receive this error.

System.ServiceProcess.TimeoutException: Time out has expired and the operation has not been completed.
   at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController.WaitForStatus(ServiceControllerStatus desiredStatus, TimeSpan timeout)
   at ReportServicesConfigUI.Panels.ServerInformationPanel.StartStopServiceTask(Boolean start)

If I look into the Windows Application log I see this error.

Service cannot be started. System.Exception: Default appdomain failed to initialize.
   at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ServiceAppDomainController.Start()
   at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ReportService.OnStart(String[] args)
   at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase.ServiceQueuedMainCallback(Object state)

Any idea where to look at? Thanks

Thanks/Regards, Philippe Cand

upgrading from 2000 to 2008

I just wanted to confirm that the directions in there will allow me to take a sql reporting services 2000 database, and move it over to a 2008 service instance? There's been no database structure changes between 2000 and 2008? All i need to do basically is just physically move the db files to the 2008 server? (plus the encryption keys, config the url etc etc)

Cannot Browse cube correctly after upgrading SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008

I upgraded to SQL Server 2008 from 2005 and now when browsing my cubes only one measure displays at a time e.g. i can view two measures actual month and YTD the two displays but when i drag a dimension to the row, the actual month disappears and only YTD displays. if i remove the YTD measure the actual month shows again. Without the dimensions in the rows they both show. Does anybody have a suggestion on how to resolve this? it worked perfectly well before the upgrade.

Upgrading SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Evaluation to SQL 2008 Enterprise

Dear users,

I ran Upgrade successfully. After upgrading when I checked the version of SQL Server it is still evaluation version having 20 days to expire. I am expecting to see something different. I don't expect to see remaining days of expiration. After applying upgrade I logged off and logged back on. Was I supposed to shut down my desktop?

What went wrong? While upgrading I didn't encounter any error.

Thank you for your support.

upgrading from 2000 to 2008 - invalid object tempcatalog

I'm guessing a missed a step somewhere. I'm trying to upgrade an existing 2000 reporting service database to 2008.

I took a backup of the reportserver database and reportservertmpdb database. I restored both copies. I backedup and restored the encryption keys. I used the reporting services config manager to change the current database to the one i just restored. Everything seemed to go ok.

When i try to open the url, i get the following error:

Invalid object name 'ReportServerTempDB.dbo.TempCatalog'. Could not use view or function 'ExtendedCatalog' because of binding errors.

Any idea what i've missed?

Error Upgrading from SQL Server 2000 - > 2008 R2 Reporting Services

Hello, I am having some trouble upgrading an existing SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services installation from an old server to a new one commissioned for this purpose, which is running SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services.  I have been following the instructions here:

but after trying to connect with reporting services 2008, i get this error:

The version of the report server database is either in a format that is not valid, or it cannot be read. The found version is 'C.0.6.54'. The expected version is '147'. (rsInvalidReportServerDatabase)

before starting the process, I ran upgrade advisor and got back the following results:

Setup can upgrade a SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services instance that uses a SQL Server 2000 Database Engine in the same instance. However, upgrade is blocked if the report server database is in a different instance, on a remote instance, or runs on a remote SQL Server 2005 instance in SQL Server 2000 compatibility mode.

*note, our reporting services IS in the same instance as the SQL Server 2000 database engine.  However, upgrade advisor still reported that this instance can not be au

Upgrading from 2005 to 2008 (R2?) What ar eadvantages for small business ?

I'm looking at upgrading some ( 13 including my DR site ) servers from 2005 to 2008 or 2008 R2.  I don't work for a huge shop ( in terms of SQL installations ).  I support primarily 3rd party applications on the servers, an increasing number of in-house applications.  I do have each server configured to do log shipping to a DR site via LiteSpeed logshipping - so the log shipping is really my only "different" factor.

I've verified with my 3rd party vendors that they ( almost ) all support 2008 R2 now - waiting on 1 more.

I'm just wondering - are there "smaller business" reasons to utilize the R2 release?  It looks to me like it's focussed more on larger scale installations.  Are there any significent performance enhancements in the engine that make it a more attractive upgrade than the initial 2008 release?

I'd welcome your input!
