Report Service Design Questions

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 24, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

Hey all,

after 3 weeks working with SQL and RS i'm done.

Now i've got some problems with the design..

my first question;

There are several pages saved in a PDF, and I've created a header. Now I need to get an issue where the header only is viewed on the first page. But if I select in properties "Print options" it works only for the first and last page but i need it also between.

my second question;

In my report is a tablix where i need "break page". But if i select "start" or "start and end" it display the first page without the tablix (header and footer displayed) and if select "end" it wont work.

my third question;

I need to show another Tablix on every page. how can i do that?

Design: Place XML Message Design Ahead of Schema Planning to Improve Web Service Interoperability

Web Services are all about exchanging data in the form of XML messages. If you were about to design a database schema, you probably wouldn't let your tool do it for you. You'd hand-tool it yourself to ensure maximum efficiency. In this article, the author maintains that designing a Web Service should be no different. You should know what kind of data will be returned by Web Service requests and use the structure of that data to design the most efficient message format. Here you'll learn how to make that determination and how to build your Web Service around the message structure.

Include a Crystal Report in .NET Web Service for Dynamic In-Memory-Only DataSet

I would like to use Crystal Reports in a .NET web service.  Ultimately I would like to convert my report document to a PDF and then return the PDF as a byte array.

My .NET DataSet is generated dynamically at run-time.  It consists of four related tables.  Since my DataSet does not have a physical datasource, I created an XML Schema file.  I then added the XML Schema file to the web service project with Add Existing Item.

A solution for working with a dynamic in-memory DataSet exists for ASP.NET web sites and client-based forms.  I tried to use this method as it is published.  When that didn't work I tried creating the report and XML Schema directly in the web service project, but that also didn't work.

The problem is apparent when you try to set the datasource.......the code bombs on the call to SetDataSource(DataSet) with the message
ex = {"The data source object is invalid."}

Crystal Reports would save me a lot

Make dynamic changes to ReportViewer Report design InteractiveSize property

Hello all,

Could someone share with me how to dynamically change the Report design InteractiveSize property?  I want to use a radiobutton list which has two options (complete list, paginated list) which changes the height of the Report display.  I wonder if I need to use the Report Parameters but how do I change and refresh to display the selected option.  Thank you.

Hi      In my windows application I am generating reports using this steps          1) Creates a stored procedure in the sql server for the required report output          2) In the .Net application add new Item adds a DataSet1.xsd binds the stored procedure to the DataSet1           3) Adds a Report1.rdlc to the application and places the requred fields in the Report1.rdlc          4) Adds a ReportViewer control to a form and binds the Report1.rdlc to the ReportViewer contol and shows the report Is this same as SQL server Reporting Service or else what can we say for these type of report generation

SQL Reporting Service 2005 - share schedule report performace T-SQL query?

Hi, I have SQL 2005 reporting services Shared Schedules and each schedule has its own subscribed report. I would like to have T-SQL 2005 to find out performance loading on each schedule. i.e. MySchedule_1 has 10 reports in it and AVEGARE report eaxecutiontime is like 3mins 5sec      MySchedule_2 has 7 reports in it and AVEGARE report eaxecutiontime is like 4mins 9sec Pls can I have T-SQL 2005 on ReportServer database to find out load on each schedules (and more drill-down to each report level for execution time)?

I need syntax help going from a URL to a Report Service Report

Here is the syntaxt I have tried.  It takes me to the Root folder page on the server,  how do I get to the report itself from an html link http://server.net/SSRS_Reports?/Folder1/Folder2/ReportName&rs:Command=Render&rc:LinkTarget=blank Thanks Dave

Issues in GetItemDataSources web service call in 2008 Report Server R2

Hi, I'm using Reporting Services web services endpoint ReportService2005.asmx with 2008 report server R2 and I'm facing some issues in getting the data source names for a report definition using the GetItemDataSources web service. The problem is that the data source names returned are different from the names of the actual data sources on the report server. The report has the following data sources: 0 1 _0 _A Data Source And the names returned by the GetItemDataSources for 2008 report server R2 is: AutoGen_0 AutoGen_1 AutoGen__0 AutoGen__A Data_Source When I make the same calls using a 2005 report server, the names returned are the same as that in the report definition. To summarize, only numeric data source names are changed to "Autogen_<number>"(eg. Autogen_0), data source names beginning with "_" are changed to "Autogen_<data source name>"(eg. AutoGen__A)  and spaces are replaced by an "_".   What is the problem for the data source names returned for 2008 report server R2? Or has there been any change in the way in which report server stores the data source names? Thanks, Kulbhushan Singhal.

Report Manager Security: If a user login to Report Service than he should be able to see only a fold

Report Manager Security: If a user login to Report Service than he should be able to see only a folder for which he has role assing and rest of the folder should be hidden for him. How this security i can achive with c#

Advanced HTML Report Design

Aside from using Reporting Services an such - I was wondering if there were any suggestions to this logic: * ASP.NET Repeaters to generate the output of the report - sortable columns. * Use SQL Stored Procedures to generate the data. My painful hurdle right now is sorting (eventually implement throttling with SQL paging). I really don't want to do stored procedure sorting nor do I want to call the stored procedure every time I want to sort. So my solutions I've came up with so far: 1. Store a datatable in session and do sorting on it and bind it to the repeater. 2. Store the datatable as xml form in a blob field in SQL database - when the user sorts, we retrive the xml, convert to datatable, then sort, rebind repeater. 3. Insert all the report data into a "temp" (a more permenant table used just for storing output) sql table, and just perform queries off of it with sorting. - I really don't like this option. Does anyone else have any suggestions? Is it the norm out there to use reporting services? I'm wondering what everyone else is doing when it comes to web based reporting without licensing other products. Thanks in advance,Reece

How to design a Centralised Business or Service Authendication Architecture in ASP .Net

Hi All,

i want to create a centralised business or Service authendication architecture in .net. for example, we have a clients like c1, c2, c3, c4, ... etc. everybody logins seperatly as well as grouply. ie, if client  "C1" logins [with login authentication] he can access c2 , c3, c4 also without login authendication. So its like a google.  if we enters gmail  account, we can access orkut, picasa like that.. i need the cetralised architecture.

And, client "c1" seperately asks seperately how will be the authendication architecture.

so give me the single solution for both these two scenarios.... how will be the architecture for these two and how is the Data Base (Login) Structure.

Thanks in Advance.

with Regards

Error in initialization of the report service

I installed the evaluation version of SQL Server 2005 to my Windows XP machine. Everything has worked well. Now I have problem. I installed the reporting service to test the web reporting.

In the Report service configuration manager  I get three errors:

The Web Services Identity indicator is red and pushing Apply button gives the error:ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.WMIProviderException: An unknown error has occurred in the WMI Provider. Error Code 8007056B

Pushing Initialization button gives the message: There was an error while switching panels. The most likely cause is an error retriewing WMI properties. the exeception details are: An error occured when attempting to connect to the report server remote procedure call (RPC) end point. Verify that the Report Server Windows service is running and then try the operation. Execption 800706B3.

Server Status Indicator is also red. Pushing the Start Button gives the following message: System.ServiceProcess.TimeoutException: Time out has expired and the operation has not been completed. at System.ServiceProcess. ServiceController. WaitForStatus(ServiceControllerStatus desiredStatus, TimeSpan timeout) at ReportServicesConfigUI.Panels.ServerInformationPanel.StartStopServiceTask(Boolean start)

resource for visual report design

Anyone have any links to good resources for visual design of reports?  That is, making them look great.  We have a request to make our reports more visually appealing.  I'm not finding much help out on the interweb.  This is for SSRS 2005.  Thanks for any help!

Design question in Report Manager?

When you view/launch a report by clicking on it in Report Manager you get a "double arrow" on the right side of the window with the help text "Full screen". If you push that button the top area with links to for example "Site settings" disapears. Is there any way to make that the default setting when you view a report?

I cant find anything about this in my books, can anyone help me?

Web Analytics Service Functionality Questions

I started the Web Analytics Service 2 days ago and the site collection analytics displayed it's first set of data yesterday.  Couple questions I have:

  1. On the Summary page, does the Value (Previous) display the previous days metrics?
  1. Under the Inventory section, all the pages (i.e. Storage Usage, Number of Sites, Top Site Product Version, Top Site Languages) display the following message:

There is no data available for this report. Here are some possible reasons: (1) Web Analytics has not been enabled long enough to generate data; (2) There is insufficient data to generate this report; (3) Data logging required for this report might not be enabled; (4) Data aggregation might not be enabled at the level required for this report.

Could this be more likely due to reason (1) or am I missing something in order

Valid Credentials for Report Execution Web Service

I've had an application running for some time which accesses reports via the reportingservices web service.   Recently I had a request to directly stream the reports for download rather than viewing them through the report viewer.  I facillitated this using the reportexecutionservice web service and in testing, everything went fine.  When deployed however, the downloads mysteriously failed to occur.

The issue traced to a 401 unauthorized error, which implies my network credentials were rejected.   Easy, right?  Well, the problem I'm having is that I'm using the same credentials for both the reportingservices web service and the reportexecutionservice web service and I had expected that what was sufficient for one was sufficient for the other.

The credentials I'm passing are for a user which is a member of the SQLServerReportServerUser group on the machine hosting the web service.  Is this insufficient to run the reportexecutionservice, and if so, what do I need to do to adjust the security permissions of this user to grant them access to reportexecutionservice?
