How to scale from Single Farm Services to Enterprise Farm Services

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 24, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I have a question onHow to scale from Single Farm Services to Enterprise Farm Services. i.e

Today , if i have a Farm with All Services like Managed metadata and Search running .. . but  tommorow  client introduce 2 new farms then there are 2 options w.r.t to service sharing

a) either do cross farms sharing of services ... which i understand how it will happen

b) or because of XYZ reasons , go for Enterprise Service Farms which hosts your manage metadata service / Earch for all your farms ....

So, question is in this case how one will move existing managed metedata / Search service to Enterprise Service Farm ?

Full Farm Backup Fails on Windows Sharepoint Services Search Database

I am just now starting to us central administration to backup the entire sharepoint farm.  All content backups fine except for the Search Database.  In looking through the backup log, it appears that the search database may not exist.  How can I determine if the search database actually does exist and if it does not can it be recreated?

Question on Searching with Cross Farm Services

have to Sharepoint 2010 Farms - called FarmA and FarmB. Both farms have web applications and content. FarmA is also a publisher of the Search Service Application. It has been configured to crawl content in both FarmA and FarmB.

I have successfully published the Search Service and the consuming FarmB see results from both farms when I do a search from a Enterprise Search Center site collection. The issue that I'm having is that when I do the same search in FarmA, I only see results from FarmA. I'm not sure if the results are getting security trimmed. I am using different farm accounts for earch farm, though I am accessing both web applications with my account. Or is there some additional configuration required on FarmA to show results from FarmB.

Any help would be appreciated Thanks in advance Brian Denicola

MOSS 2007 Services Not Starting After Adding 2008 R2 WFE to 2003 R2 Farm

In preperation for our 2010 upgrade we have been migrating our 2003 R2 infrastructure to 2008 R2. Our prior environment was server 2003 R2 DB server running SQL 2005 and one 2003 R2 WFE. We migrated the DB server to 2008 R2 and SQL 2008. The next step was to add a 2008 R2 WFE and then decommision the 2003 R2 WFE.

Setup was successful on the 2008 R2 box. However, in CA the services on the 2008 R2 WFE show "Starting". The CA service is the only service that shows "Started" on the 2008 R2 box. The Document Conversions Launcher Service, Document Conversions Load Balancer Service, Windows SharePoint Services Search and Windows SharePoint Services Web Application show "Starting". The Windows SharePoint Services Administration does not display a status.

What step am I missing to get all of the services running on the new 2008 R2 WFE so I can turn off the 2003 R2 WFE? I don't see anything in the error logs.

How to get a list of all the BCS services in a farm

This question is pretty similar to this post

I have been searching the web using this post as an example to try and find the missing pieces.  I would like to get a list of all the BCS services in the SharePoint farm and show them in a list to the user.

I have tried searching for SPServiceApplicationProxyGroup, BdcServiceApplicationProxy, and a few other bits and pieces.  I don't know if I am tired or really dense, but I am missing something obvious here.  Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction because right now i am left with reading MSDN object trees hoping to find something that strikes a chord.

COM+ Integration: How .NET Enterprise Services Can Help You Build Distributed Applications

The .NET Common Language Runtime (CLR) is Microsoft's next-generation component technology. The CLR is a replacement for COM, but not for COM+. COM+, now called .NET Enterprise Services, is the Microsoft object runtime environment for scalable system development. This article explains how to implement and deploy COM+ configured classes using the CLR, how to access object context and call context, and the rules for managing context-relative object references. Also discussed are ways to manage precious resources such as data connections and pooled objects, and the relationship between COM+ and the new .NET remoting architecture.

Use of having multiple Services for single silverlight application

Hi My project have 4 modules, I have decided to use single service with multiple interface (1 interface for 1 module, i.e totally 4 interfaces) and multiple partial class ( 4 partial class). Partial classes use this interface. But I have another thought of using multiple service ( 4 services, i.e for each module one service class (.svc)). Please let me know, which approach is right?

How to use single windows service to host multiple WCF Services. I have a mutiple instance of same WCF service in different folder, each instance has unique service name and port. WCFService has reference to Reg-Free COM Reference, i have Native.WCFService.manifest in each folder. Ex: WCFService1 is in "C:\WCFService01\WCFService.dll, Native.OCWCFService.manifest, OCWCFService.dll.config WCFService2 is in "C:\WCFService02\WCFService.dll, Native.OCWCFService.manifest, OCWCFService.dll.config Now i need host above services from single Windows Service. I am trying to create AppDomain for each above WCFService Instance from Windows Service and then host. Its working if i register COM dll in the server using regsvr32, but when i un register COM dll, i am getting unable to load COM component .... This looks like AppDomain is not loading COM DLL and Manifest files. Its looks strange but we need it in this way because we have production and test environment in the same server. Everything works fine if create a seperate Windows Service for each WCFService Instance, but my manager wants single Windows Service :). Any help whould be really appreciated.  ravi kumar reddy

Profile Synchronization on a Single-Server Farm

Profile synchronization is documented to not work on a stand-alone SharePoint 2010 installation, but is it supposed to work on a single-server farm?  Profile import works fine in our single-server SharePoint 2007 farms.  The SharePoint administrator here is telling me that we need to add another server to our SharePoint 2010 single-server farm to get profile synch to work.  That does not make sense to me.  A farm should be able to run all the service applications on 1 server (which is the normal configuration in an evaluation environment).  Jeff B

Expose data contract used in two services as a single type on client side?

I have a .dll that contains my data contracts and I reference this dll in two different services.

Now, on the client side I don't want to add this dll because I need both WPF-clients and Silverlight clients. So, what I want is to be able to use a single data contract on the client side and not with different namespaces for the different services. As I understand this should be possible but I don't know how.

Can someone explain how I can generate a single data contract on client side that can be used for calls to both services?

Thanks for help!
