Implementing custom ValidationFor to show an error icon with a tooltip instead of just text for c

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 24, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

I got the problem that my implementation (see source below) only shows the validation error message after server side validation an NOT

after clientside validation! My questions is, how can you extend or implement to show the validation error message also on client-side validation.

Unfortunately I have not found any other info source about this subject, so any help will be very much appreciated!

 public static string ErrorMessageFor<TModel, TProperty>(this HtmlHelper<TModel> htmlHelper, Expression<Func<TModel, TProperty>> expression)
            string modelName = htmlHelper.ViewContext.ViewData.TemplateInfo.GetFullHtmlFieldName(ExpressionHelper.GetExpressionText(expression));
            FormContext formContext = htmlHelper.ViewContext.FormContext;

            if (!htmlHelper.ViewData.ModelState.ContainsKey(modelName) && formContext == null)
                return null;

            ModelState modelState = htmlHelper.ViewData.ModelState[modelName];
            ModelErrorCollection modelErrors = (modelState == null) ? null : modelState.Errors;
            ModelError modelError = ((modelErrors == null) || (modelErrors.Count == 0)) ? null : modelErrors[0];

            if (modelError == null && formContext == null)

Can't get an Icon to show for Desktop shortcut and Program Menu

I've created a SetupWizard, but can't get it to show the Icon for the shortcut on desktop and program menu. The installation goes fine without any errors, the only problem is the icon.

I've made a shortcut of my exe file in the Application Folder and dragged the shortcut to the Desktop folder, then on the shortcut properties, I assigned it an icon picture located in Application Folder.

Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

Custom Control Design-Time SiteMap Provider Error

Greetings - I was referred here by MSDN forums hope this is the right place -

I have a custom control (:WebControl) that renders web.sitemap in a specific way. While it runs error free and produces the expected result, at Design-Time it complains

Error Creating Control - MyControl The provider 'AspNetXmlSiteMapProvider' specified for the defaultProvider does not exist in the providers collection.

I have discovered that the error is cause by this line of code:

string div = string.Format("<div class='{0}' id='{1}'>{2}</div>", this.CssClass, this.ID.ToString(), EnumerateNodesRecursive(SiteMap.RootNode, level));

or more specifically, by the reference to SiteMap.RootNode - I am not clear what is missing thoough because I have configured the SiteMapProvider in web.config as this:

        <add name="AspNetXmlSiteMapProvider"
             type="System.Web.XmlSiteMapProvider, System.Web, Version=2.0.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"

Custom Control Design view error

I have created a custom control from scratch and it works fine as in you can build the project that uses it and it works fine at runtime. Problem is when you go to design view the control shows an error in the place of where the control should be rendered.

Error: '<SomeValue>' Could not be set to '<SomeProperty>'

This shows up on all my custom set properties. These properties are created as basic as possible. I can give the properties values in Source view and run the app just fine. I can even add a Onclick event. If I don't set any custom properties the control will render fine in Design view. It's only when I set a value to a custom property.

Property Code Example:

public string Text
                string ret = "";
                object obj = ViewState["Text"];
                if (obj != null)
                    ret = obj.ToString();
                return ret;
                ViewState["Text"] = value;

I've even removed the Category and Description tags with no difference.

I don't know if what I said makes sens, but I hope it

Error Handling: Throwing Custom Exception Types from a Managed COM+ Server Application

Exception handling semantics in .NET are based on type, so you can create custom exceptions that have their own properties and methods. In .NET, exceptions are first-class citizens, and since they're the built-in error handling mechanism, all .NET-compliant languages must support exceptions. In addition, COM+ services are available to .NET code as Enterprise Services, so you can leverage exceptions in your Enterprise Services design.In this article the author describes custom exceptions, throwing exceptions across COM interop boundaries, and working with Enterprise Services.

C++ and STL: Take Advantage of STL Algorithms by Implementing a Custom Iterator

There are many benefits to using the Standard Template Library (STL) for C++ development, including the ability to use generic data structures and algorithms. To use the STL algorithms, an STL-conforming container is required. Iterating through the Internet Explorer cache is an informative exercise, but the cache is not an STL-conforming container. So, to use the STL algorithms to search and enumerate the Internet Explorer cache, an adapter is needed. Building such an adapter-an STL-conforming iterator-is the topic of this article. Also provided is an overview of the components of the STL and the Win32 Internet APIs used.

Custom tool error: Failed to generate code for the service reference 'CompanyService'. Please che

A little background because I feel I have an out of the ordinary architecture in place and don't know if this is contributing to the problem.

We have an existing ASP.net application that is undergoing expansion.  The new functionality is all written in Silverlight 4.  As part of that expansion I gutted all the old Linq to SQL and put Entity Framework 4 into place.  To do this I created a standard .net Class Library and added my edmx files there.  Naturally, the business entities created by this cannot be used in Silverlight.  So I created a Silverlight Class Library and added all the business entities to that Silverlight Class Library as linked files.  I changed the name space to be the same.

So I have the following assembly / namespaces

Company.Project.Dal.csproj / Company.Project.Entities (.net 4 class library)

Company.Project.Entities.csproj / Company.Project.Entities (SL4 class library)

With this architecture I was able to share my business entities with my SL enabled web services, my asp.net projects, my silverlight projects.  Really it's a beautiful thing.

Once this was done I added "message" classes to Company.Project.Dal and again shared them with the other entites using linked files.  These messages are things like MyObjectRequest; they are class

Rejected by custom validation error & ItemAdding

I believe this topic was discussed before in this forum, but I couldn't find it using the exact error I receive: "operation for file.doc was rejected by custom validation on the server"

When I try to add a new word document to my doc library, Word displays this error instead of my custom error message. I set properties.Cancel=true in ItemAdding of my EventHandler, because my validation fails.

Is there any way to display user properties.ErrorMessage instead of this generic error message?

How To Conditionally Show ListViewByQuery On Custom Page

I would like to only show a ListViewByQuery control on a custom page if the query contains some data. Currently if the query returns no data it is still rendered on the page with the comment "There are no items to show in this view".

The following code is my query code:

querySM.ViewFields = "<FieldRef Name='AssignedTo'/>" +
                  "<FieldRef Name='RequestSMReviewerComments' />" +
                  "<FieldRef Name='WorkflowOutcome' />";

        sQueryStr = "<Where>" +
                 "<And>" +
                  "<IsNotNull>" +
                   "<FieldRef Name='RequestSMReviewerComments' />" +
                  "</IsNotNull>" +
                  "<Eq>" +
                   "<FieldRef Name='WorkflowInstanceID' />" +

Javascript error on Rich Text Editor of CEWP

Hi all,

I have a problem that is really bugging and I wasn't able to find any workaround all day. I'll try to give as many details as possible:

I'm maintaining several site collections on a single server and this problem occurs only on one of the site collections. However it occurs on all subsites of this collection, it occurs on old pages and newly created pages, even on pages containing only one empty CEWP.

When I'm pressing the button for Rich Text Editor of CEWP I get the following error:

Message: Invalid argument.
Line: 5740
Char: 2
Code: 0
URI: http://www.dyrlaegeankenaevn.dk/_layouts/1030/HtmlEditor.js

I've tracked down the error with IE developer tools and I found that the error pops up in HtmlEditor.js at

function RTE2_GenerateLaunchArguments(parameterArray, webUrl, containerID)

I followed containerID down the stack and it comes from:

Implementing a custom Membership Provider vs. using aspnet_Profile table - Which should I do?

I wanted to expand the amount of information that is associated with each user(MembershipUser) in the ASPNETDB.MDF database file. Adding columns like FirstName, LastName, etc. So I began implementing my own custom Membership Provider. I created a derived MembershipUser class with the extra private variables that I wanted each MembershipUser record to store. Its basically done. Almost after I did this I stumbled across the columns in the ASPNETDB.MDF->aspnet_Profile table called "PropertyNames" and "PropertyValuesString".  Could I have simply used these two columns to accomplish what I was attempting to do or are these columns for global application configuration settings?

Is the aspnet_Profile table purpose to store expanded/related information about users such as personal information? Or is it for something else? Thanks.

full-text search error

I have created procedure for full-text search and it works in SQL Management Studio 2008 (SQL Server 2008 Express) but in Visual Studio 2010 not - I have error:

Full-Text Search is not installed, or a full-text component cannot be loaded.

I have read somewhere that only admin can use full-text indexes - so how I can use full-text search in VS2010 ?

FieldTemplate_Edit to show value when custom meta data is set editable equals false

Have a custom FieldTemplate (RadioButtonChooser_Edit.ascx) that shows a radiobuttonlist based on a single character.  Using LinqtoSQL/DynamicData enabled.Example G, F, P  (Good, Fair, Poor).If the custom metadata for a field in the table is set  [Editable(false)]  I get a G, F, or P.  I would like to show the full word when editable is set to false.  Not sure how to approach this.
