[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified

trying to install sql server2005 on a windows 2003 server box.

getting msg below at the sql server .  i looked at other posts on trying to uninstall  SQL Native Access Client and norton antivirus.  i could never find the snac on the add - remove programs and this server does not have a virus protection program yet.

here's the history of the installs on the server:

wanted to test a 2005 upgrade so:

  1) installed sql server 2000 then sp4 then restored some databases to it - all OK

  2) tried to upgrade to sql 2005 but ran into problems and left it at that.

had a disk drive crash on the d drive so lost the installs but not the operating system

when the drive was replaced, left alone for a while

then wanted to test a straight 2005 install

  1) removed the broken 2005 attempt

  2) removed the 2000

  3) installed 2005 and got the error on the subject line:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup

SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration. The error was: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified Refer to server error logs and setup logs for more information. [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data Source name not found and no device driver specified

I get the above error message when running my VB6 sp4 application on a new Win7 workstation (32 bit machine). The app runs fine on a WIn xp sp3 workstation. The app does require a DSN setup in the ODBC section and I setup the SQL connection the same as I do on an XP machine. I also test the connection on the WIN & machine and it "test successfully". After the error above the app returns a runtime error -2147467259 (80004005). I am attaching my connection string:

Data source name not found and no default driver specified on win xp

Hi All,

I have got a new laptop with I5, windows 7 64-bit and I am trying to run application developed in vb6 which uses DSN connection to connect to the database which is in SQL 2000. Actually I was facing issue "SQL server does not exists" while connecting to the db and I have solved this by running c:\windows\syswow64\odbcad32.exe and configuring dsn through it.

Now I have installed virtual machine windows xp professional sp3 which is 32-bit and when I run my application from VM then I am getting following error -

"Datasource name not found and no default driver specified"

when I go to administrative tools > Data sources(ODBC) then I can see only one driver i.e. SQL server. I configured it but not working..

Can somebody help me on this? I am stuck..

Prabi I can be still better.

osql & "Data source name not found and no default driver specified"

OK, I see that this issue has been posted elsewhere, but I have not been able to use those posts to solve my problems.  I'm trying to run a  sql script using osql.  The batch cmd listed below  brings up an osql command prompt on our servers, which means I'm connected, correct? These servers both have SQL Server installed.

CALL osql -S servername -U userid -P password

But why can't I run this same command on my desktop?  I get the "Data source name not found and no default driver specified" error.  I don't have SQL Server installed, but I do have the SQL Server client installed and I can access the DB thru SQL Server management studio without any problems.  I checked and it does appear that I have the SQL Server native client installed on my desktop.

I need to establish a connection between an Access 2003 database (32 bit) and an 11g 64 bit Oracle database on a server. I am running Windows 7 on a 64 bit laptop. I did a clean install of Oracle 11g for 64 bit. I have no problem accessing the Oracle database via the Oracle SQL Developer. I just have a problem from within Access. I hope someone can help me. I've been fighting this for several months. Thanks in advance!

Server: MSg 17, Level 16, State 1 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not e

Hi All, When we try to connect to a sql server 2000 using SQL server authentication, we are facing the below mentioned error msg. "Server: MSg 17, Level 16, State 1 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied" But, once we connect to server using Windows NT login from the client machine, i.e., execute the below command in the run prompt and provide the credentials for windows login, we are able to connect to the server using sql server authentication(user name: sa) \\server_ipaddress\c$ When we went though some of the msdn links, found that windows firewall was the major cause. But, in the server 1. Windows Firewall is turned off 2. TCP/IP and NamedPipes are enabled 3. Default Port Number is 1433 Any user, who wants to connect to the SQL Server using SSMS, first have to perform a Windows NT login and then connect using SQL authentication.  Due to the above error, the DTS packages which are executing in a different server are getting failed. NOTE: Even after connecting to the server using Remote Desktop connection in a local machine, SQL authentication fails. Its manadatory to run the command \\server_ipaddress\c$ in each of the local machine. Any suggestion to resolve the above error is very much appreciated.   Thanks in advance, Raksha Hegde

persist security info not available by a codebase odbc driver

I want to interface the software Sage ventpartner with sharepoint.

For that i have to use the odbc {codebaseStand} driver and i know that the following string is working :

The pb is when i construct my bdc xml file i have to enter :

        <Property Name="rdbconnectionDriver" Type="System.String">{CodeBaseOdbcStand}</Property>
        <Property Name="rdbconnectiondbq" Type="System.String">c:\ventpart\database</Property>

ODBC Driver for SQL Server Compact Edition

I know that there is no ODBC driver available for SQL Server Compact Edition version 3.5.  Do you plan to add an ODBC driver in future release? If yes, is it high in your priority list?   The scenario why I am looking for an ODBC driver is to connect an MS Access application to a SDF file instead of MDB file.  This will enable me to easily sync the SDF file with SQL server repository using the new Data Sync Services.   Mario Cardinal MVP Solutions Architect

OMPM script cannot find ODBC Driver

I'm setting up a local OMPM (Office Migration Planning Manager) application, which requires an SQL Server database. I installed SQL Server Express successfully. When I run the OMPM script to create the database (CreateDB.bat) I get the following error: SQL-DMO Install Required: This operation requires the SQL Server ODBC Driver, version 3.80 or later, which comes with SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server Express. I installed SQL Server Express with this file "SQLEXPR32_x86_ENU.exe" Could it be that the ODBC Driver was not registered correctly during the install of SQL Server Express? Alternatively, where can I find the missing driver? Thanks in advance, Maurice

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver

I'm getting the following exception when attempting to connect to SQL Server 2005 using Microsoft's new JDBC driver: com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: The TCP/IP connection to the host  has failed. java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect The help docs suggest checking connectivity using telnet. So attempting to connect via telnet to generates: Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed. So I try to start telnet: net start telnet I get the following error message: The service cannot be started either because it is disabled or because it has no enables devices associated with it. Can anyone help? Thanks

[OLE/DB provider returned message: [MERANT][ODBC Sybase driver]Distributed transaction enlistment fa

Ok, i have seen tons of articles on the error, but still can't figure it out. This is being executed through nested procedure calls, until it is roughly 3 levels deep, then makes a call to Sybase using dynamic SQL and OPENROWSET. The message that is returned is listed below. Yes, i looked up all I could find on it. The thing I find interesting is I can simply take the dynamic SQL and the openrowset call out and run it in query analyzer just fine. but when I run it through the procedure it generates the errors. Any thoughts?   [OLE/DB provider returned message: [MERANT][ODBC Sybase driver]Distributed transaction enlistment failed.] Server: Msg 7391, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'MSDASQL' was unable to begin a distributed transaction. Bug in ODBC SQL Server driver (SQLFetch hangs)

I have come across a bug in the ODBC driver for SQL Server when working against SQL Server 2008 64-bit with TDE where tables contain text-datatypes. We concluded that it is a bug after testing a simple SQL query using Microsoft ODBC test tool (odbcte.exe) and the workaround for us was to start using the "SQL Native Client 10" instead. However I would like to share this information if someone else come across this problem. Below I will describe the problem in more detail. The table has three columns with text datatypes and we use a simple select query against this table to return about 10 rows of data but SQLFetch hangs before all data is returned. It is unfortunately very difficult to reproduce the errror since even a very small change will change the behaviour. If we for example add or remove a column to the select statement then the problem will dissappear, if we call SQLBindCol before instead of after SQLExecute (or the other way around) the problem will dissapear, if we change the WHERE-clause to fetch a different set of rows the problems will dissapear. We have seen the problem though with a number of different SQL queries so it is reproducable.

Microsoft Excel and Sharepoint KPI's (External Data Source)

This is my first post i hope i get a clear answer for my question. I recenty have been working on KPI's drawn from Microsoft Excel documents that i created. However, as we know, external data sources in excel don't work with sharepoint. If that was possible it would have saved the company a lot of time and effort My questions are: Is there any way to have external data sources with some advanced modifications, or any other way that would simulate this process? (External data update) Can i directly update my data by tampering the database where the excel file is saved?   I don't know if the files uploaded in sharepoint are stored in a database, so i want some validation around this. (Name of the database, path etc.)   Hope you can shed some light to my questions Thanks in advance Theo
