jQuery: Styling DropDownList Alternating Items (Rows)

In the following example, I will show how you can style any asp:dropdownlist very easily.

The example demonstrates how you can change alternating row items background color, using the fadeTo() to add a nice touch in the dropdownlist. You can change alt rows with a couple lines.

How to handle Active and inactive items in the dropdownlist?

It is a general ASP.NET questions. Many times some items in dropdownlist will become inactive (retired)or active again. It is easy to handle in the new records which use only currently active items. But how to handle the inactive items which need to be used to show history records. It bothered me a long time, not sure how to solve this problem efficiently.

dropdownlist javascript change items

I can't find solution for this problem for very long time:

I have dropdownlists in Gridview. I need to dinamicly change content of dropdown on client with javascript. Ok, I know to do that. But the problem is when I send data to server changes in dropdownlist does not see. On server I have  old items. How can I change items in dropdown on client with javascript and than see that items on sever when postback data?

dropdownlist bound to sqldatasource adds items instead of replacing on change

I have a series of dropdownlists on webform in ASP 4.0. The first drop down is filled upon load, and then when a user selects a value from that list, it populates the second dropdown. To accomplish this, I have a SQLdatasource with a parametersource of the first drop-down list control. This works great, except when a user changes their selection from the first drop down. It performs the query, but then adds the list of items to the ones that were already there from the previous selection, instead of replacing it with the new data. Here is the code:

 <asp:DropDownList ID="ddlMajor" runat="server" DataMember="DefaultView"
      DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1" DataTextField="majortext"
      DataValueField="majorkey" AppendDataBoundItems="True" AutoPostBack="True">
         <asp:ListItem Value="0">Select Major</asp:ListItem>
<asp:DropDownList ID="ddlReq" runat="server" DataMember="DefaultView"
      DataSourceID="SqlDataSource2" DataTextField="req" DataValueField="admreqkey"
            AppendDataBoundItems="True" AutoPostBack="True">
                <asp:ListItem Value="0">Sel

Html.DropDownList using a List

This has to be a simple thing, but for whatever reason, I'm just not finding it. I want to use the HTML Helper function to create a DropDownList based on a List<string> (and actually have it bind to the data field on the model).  The simplest example, I suppose, would be: <%: Html.DropDownList("Material", new SelectList(new[] {"Wood","Brick","Metal"})) %> This creates the items in the drop-down, but of course, there's nothing in this line that would bind it to my model (model.Material).  I've done drop-downs with collections of models, where you can bind the Data and Display attributes to properties of the class, but I don't have a class here, just a List. Any ideas?

Order of the items in a DropDownList inside GridView

I have a DropDownList inside the EditTemplateItem (if the user clicks edit) in a GridView. The DropDownList receives all available rows from the database.

My problem is, if the user clicks Edit in the GridView to edit a row and opens the DropDownList Box the original item is not selected but the first one. That means the items are sorted.

Have someone an idea how I can solve this issue that the right item / the original is selected if I change to edit mode of the grid view?

The only idear that I have is to write some lines in the code behind for the updating event and selected the suitable index manually but I think there must be an easier way.

Dropdownlist posted back html content,firefox alarms "Invalid postback or callback argument"

Ok probably you might have seem a dozens of post's titled "Invalid postback or callback argument" but this one is different.

Application that i am creating is simple content editor using the FCK editor.net Control (the content is HTML Encoded before saving t0 DB and then Decoded back again when displaying). just a simple drawing of of its ui is like this

DdlPages < listing the pages Whose regions/controls value can be edited> Databound

DdlRegions <listing the controls whose content can be edited> Databound on DdlPages selected index change

===========Retreived from DropDownlistRegions selected Index Change===========

txtName <a simple name for the region, user friedly identity >

==> FCK Editor <==

<Save Button> <Discard Button>

I am not such a good designer but hope you understand the UI layout.

This thing works flawless on IE 6,7,8

DropdownlistRegions holds the content to be displayed in the txtName and FckEditor. This is done by forming a custom concatenated column containing the txtName and Fckeditor(HTML content) separated by a ' ^ ' character. and then databound the column to the Dropdownlist value property.

So on selected index chang

'Dropdownlist' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items

I have a dropdown list that has a bind on it and I get this error. Why am I getting this error and what can I do to fix it. here is the code for the dropdown I currently have:

 <asp:DropDownList  ID="DDLPreferred" AppendDataBoundItems="true" SelectedValue='<%# Bind("PREFERRED_COMMUNICATION") %>'  runat="server" TabIndex="15">
                <asp:ListItem Text="none" Value=""></asp:ListItem>

				<asp:ListItem>Home Phone</asp:ListItem>
				<asp:ListItem>Work Phone</asp:ListItem>
				<asp:ListItem>Cell Phone</asp:ListItem>

Beginner question: get selected value of Html.DropDownList

Hi everyone, how are you doing!

I'm just started learning MVC 2. I went through the music store example (though I don't 100% get everything). Now I want to add some functions to the page to learn more. I added paging, and now I want to add search combo boxes (drop down lists). Basically, in the album list screen, I want to add 1 drop down list of genre. If user select 1 genre then click Search, the page should show all album of that genre only.

My problem is I don't know how to get the selected value of this drop down list. The approach I am using now is to get the selected value, then put it as parameter and redirect to Index (/StoreManager/Index?searchGerneId=x). I searched through many posts but couldn't find a solution that works for me. It is probably because I don't really get MVC yet and still try to do things the code-behind way. So please help me :) My code  for Index in Controller is below

public ActionResult Index(int pageNumber = 1, int searchGenreId = -1)
            var albums = from album in storeDB.Albums
                         join genre in storeDB.Genres on album.GenreId equals genre.GenreId
                         join artist in storeDB.Artists on album.ArtistId equals artist.ArtistId
                         orderby album.Title
                         select al

Items added through Javascript to a dropdownlist are not accessible through code behind

Hi All,

I am successfully able to add new items to a drop down list using Javascript.

The script I am using is

        function FillJavaScriptValues() {
            var ddlDeliveryVan;
            ddlDeliveryVan = document.getElementById("DropDownList1");
            var opt = document.createElement("option");

The detailsView has a label which shows the AssignedTo name for a particular record and it works fine. But if I click the edit button to shwo the dropdownlist in the editItemTemplate it is givig me the above error.

<asp:DetailsView ID="dtvAssign" runat="server" AutoGenerateRows

How to get list of VALUES (not items) from a dropdownlist?

Hello all.  I see that dropdownlist has an "items" property to get the list of displayed items for a dropdown, but it doesn't seem to have an equivalent property for getting the "values" associated with the items.  For example, I may have a dropdown that displays "High", "Medium" and "Low", but returns values of "H", "M", "L".  How can I easily get that list of HML?

Thanks for any help!

DropDownList in the FooterTemplate of a DataGrid will not show its items

I am placing a dropdown list in the footer of a DataGrid like this:

<asp:DataGrid id="MyGrid" runat="server">
            <asp:DropDownList ID="myDDL" OnLoad="myDDL_OnLoad" runat="server" />

In my code behind file, in the myDDL_OnLoad event handler, I call to the database, populate a SqlDataReader, and set the DDL's datasource to that datareader. I define what data columns should be used for the DataValueField and DataTextField of the dropdownlist. Then I call the DropDownList's DataBind() method. Everything works without error. But, when the dropdownlist is displayed, it has blank lines in it.

By that, I mean if 8 records are loaded into the dropdownlist, it will expand to a size appropriate for 8 rows but, it will be empty. there is no text in it.

Has anyone seen this type of behavior before? This dropdownlist is in the footer of a dynamically loaded ajax update panel so, it is difficult to see the source code to see what values are in the html element rendered to represent the dropdown.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Help: populate Html.DropDownList from table data? [Linq to SQL model]

I have two tables, Users and Roles.  The roles table is a reference table for the different roles of my site (RoleId and RoleName columns). The Users table contains profile data for each user, including a RoleId column that is FK'd back to the Roles table [RoleId].

Both tables are in a Linq to SQL model.

I have an edit page created which lists all the profile values of a user.  The edit page inherits the User model.  One of the editable values is the RoleId field.  I want to set this up to be a drop-down list that contains items labeled using the RoleName column of the Roles table, and matched with values of RoleId.

How can I achieve this?

Html.ListBox cannot select multiple items

I'm trying to use the ListBox html helper in a simple form.

verhuurPrijzenLst is a simple list that gets put into the ListBox, I think I need "MultiSelectList", but I cannot use it (MVC framework needed)?

I don't know exactly how to do that ( bin folder and @inherits ? )

So it's nice to have a helper at hand, but if you cannot use it properly without using the MVC framework, that is a pity.

   List<SelectListItem> verhuurPrijzenLst = new List<SelectListItem>();
   foreach (string dataLine in verhuurPrijzen) {
        var verhuurPrijslijn = dataLine.Split(delimiterChar)[0].AsDateTime().ToString("dd MMMM") + " - " + dataLine.Split(delimiterChar)[0].AsDateTime().AddDays(7).ToString("dd MMMM") + " ? " + dataLine.Split(delimiterChar)[1] + ",00";
        var selecteer = false;
        if(Request["Huurperiode"] != null)
                selecteer = true;
        verhuurPrijzenLst.Add(new SelectListItem { Text = verhuurPrijslijn, Selected = selecteer });
    @Html.ListBox("Huurperiode",verhuurPrijzenLst,new {size="15", multiple="multiple"});

ASP.NET, HTML, JavaScript Snippet Support (VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 Series)

This post covers another useful improvement in VS 2010 - HTML/ASP.NET/JavaScript snippet support. Snippets allow you to be more productive within source view by allowing you to create chunks of code and markup that you can quickly apply and use in your application with a minimum of character typing.

Visual Studio has supported the concept of "snippets" for VB and C# in previous releases - but not for HTML, ASP.NET markup and JavaScript. With VS 2010 we now support snippets for these content types as well.
