Adding Lookups to Report fields in Report Builder 2.0

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 23, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

Since Report Builder 2.0 is targetted at making reporting simple to create by end users, and most databases are normalised, I am looking for a way to add lookups to report fields.  By this I mean that the report should display a description rather than the code actually stored in the record being reported.

I know that this is possible by altering the SQL for the main report dataset to include a "left outer join" to the table of codes and descriptions related to the foreign key column, returning the description rather than the code (see below), but this is not something that I would expect end users to be able to implement.

select m.id,

... etc ..

from    main_table m left outer join

          lookup_table lu on lu.Code = m.code1

For end users, I would expect a right click menu on the

Report Builder returning #Error value in empty fields and working with Date field

Hey guys,

I am trying to build a report using the date field from CRM and only wanting to return the date I am using this expression "=Fields!new_date.Value.ToShortDateString()" but when there is an empty fiel I get #Error. How do I solve this?

Also is there anyway to return the date field with the actual month showing instead of the numerical value? i.e. instead of 1/31/2010 Have it show January 31, 2010 (Doesn't have to be exactly in that format, but want the name value for the month.)

SSRS 2008 R2 and sharepoint 2007 report builder problems

I upgraded our enterprise sql server 2008 to sql server 2008 r2 last weekend.  Along with this i installed the report builder 3.0 on the servers as well and the updated ssrs add in for sharepoint.  The upgrade went fine, no errors that i could find.  The problem is now when i go to a library that has the report builder content type enabled and click report builder report under new it does not load report builder 3.0.

I updated the custom report builder url in central administration from /_vti_bin/ReportBuilder/ReportBuilder_2_0_0_0.application to /_vti_bin/ReportBuilder/ReportBuilder_3_0_0_0.application

however when i do click the new report builder report it kicks me over to http://company.com/ReportServer_MossEnt  which itemizes out each individual sharepoint site in the farm.

Is the integration of ssrs 2008 r2, sharepoint 2007 and report builder 3.0 work?  did i install the wrong version of the report builder add in?  The above is the only problem i am having now.

all servers are server 2008, 64 bit and moss 2007 enterprise with sp2 & april 2010 cu

Adding a Chart to a Local Report

Dear All

I have created a report as a local report which looks like this:

I'm trying to add a chart to this report and I'd like it to display something like this (so sorry for the crude drawing):

It seems like it should be quite straight forward but I've tried dragging the fields into the chart all different ways and can't make it happen. I'm using Visual Studio 2010 and here's what my list of fields from the dataset look like:

I thought ObservationYear would be the series and all the other fields would be the data but this doesn't work. It produces a chart like this which wasn't what I was hoping for:

Please could you help me understand what it is I'm doing wrong? I'm very grateful for any help/advice you might be able to provide.

Kind regards

Report Builder Report manage data sources - relink programmatically

As part of a site definition solution several report builder report rdl files are uploaded to a report folder.  After a site is created with the defintion, the reports must be manually re-linked to the data source through the UI context menu ("Manage Data Sources").  I have been trying to figure out how to do the re-linking programmatically without luck.  Any ideas? ( Reporting Services is configured as integrated with sharepoint)

How do you add duplicate fields to a SSRS custom report and receive differtent output values.

I have built a custom report in SSRS 2008 using fields for supplier and customer.   I have added a Parent Row Group using the Supplier field for the group expression and used the Customer Details as my child details group. This returns a list of all customers for each supplier.   (Supplier | = Customer details ( Name, Dob etc.)   How would I add an additional Supplier field to the customer details returning only values for other Suppliers used by a customer, not the value of the Supplier listed in the Parent Group?

Adding a button to the Report Portal

Hi everyone, I am using SSRS 2008 and would like to know if there is a way to customize the Report Portal?  I need to add a button that the user can click on when they find a bug or the report doesn't work.  The button would open an email window for the user to type in the problem they are experiencing and it would be sent to our Ontime system.      Thanks for your help!  Youngmon...

Report Builder 3.0 'backward' compatibility??

I've been asked to deploy Report Builder -- a new deployment, it's never been deployed before. Can RB 3.0 create reports against all versions of SQL Server -- 2005, 2008, and 2008 R2?? I understand that they might not be backward-compatible with earlier versions of Report Builder. Can Report Builder 3.0-created reports be used and seen within WSS 3.0 running on SQL 2008?? -- what would be necessary to make this happen?? The present reporting server files installed to the Citrix servers and SharePoint server are SQL 2008 Reporting Services files (10.x), I imagine installing Report Builder 3.0 would be compatible?? Thank you, Tom

SSRS 2008 R2 - Query builder freezes and needs to be shut down Report Builder 3 when attempting quie

Hi, In SSRS, using Report Builder 3.0 (SSRS R2), after choosing a Report Model as the report's embedded data source, launched "Query Deisinger…" from GUI to build data source in report.  First 1-2 attempts at querying underlying data source (Oracle back-end), are successful, but later attempts freeze application to the point where application freezes and overall Report Builder application needs to be forcibly shut-down. This system freeze has occurred when referencing tables containing a very small number of records as well as larger data sets.  Suspect that application freezing may be caused by timing-out of connection to back-end database. but I am not sure. Any suggestion to solve this issue? Thanks   Environment - Distributed deployment Server1(report_srv) --Windows server 2003R2 64bit, Installed sql server 2008R2 reporting service, configuration tools Server2 (report_db_srv) --windows server 2003r2 64bit, sql server 2005 for report server database

We have a data warehouse with OLAP system in SSAS (relational data mart in Oracle), reports and dashboards SSRS and Performance Point. Our idea is to change report tool from Discoverer to Report Builder. Many thanks

Report Builder 2.0 Permissions

I've recently moved from SSRS 2008 Standard/SharePoint Integrated to SSRS 2008 Standard/Native.   I have some users with full permissions to a single folder within the SSRS site.  They need to access ReportBuilder.  In my testing, I've added my user account to SystemUser on site settings, as well as given it full permissions to the folder.  However, I keep receiving insufficient permissions exceptions when trying to connect with ReportBuilder.  For the site URL in ReportBuilder, I've tried both http://servername/reportserver and http://servername/reportserver/folder_name.   Any ideas? Thanks
