Error: The specified user or domain group was not found.

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 23, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

Hi all,

So I am having this issue with SharePoint Central Administration. I am not able to get into many of the services within CA due to the above error. I have narrowed it down (I'm almost positive) to a user who was an administrator on the managed metadata service and is no longer with us and was removed from the AD. I have asked to have the account added back in, of course, we don't have the SID history. It was added and I used the stsadm cmdlet migrateuser -ignoresidhistory and I get the same exact error. I've tried this logged on as several diffeerent administrators including the domain administrator account and have received the same error.

Anyone have any ideas?

Sql 2008 on Windows 2008 domain error: windows nt user or group not found

I am running sql 2008 R2 and win 2008 R2 and simply trying to add a new domain user into sql, but I get the error above. What's weird is that when I do a check names from the add user or group window it finds the account I want to use. I've tried adding a different account, but I get the same issue--so its not the account. I've also tried running the create login t-sql command but it gives the same error. I've also tried disabling, via the gpedit.msc tool, the digitally encrypt or sign secure channel keys. But that did not work either.

User Profile Service - "The specified user or domain group was not found"

Hi there, I had configured the User Profile Service and all was working well (Syncing with AD etc.). However, something has gone wrong. The services still appear to be running; both Forefront Identity Manager services are running, and the services show as 'Started' in Central Administration. The 'My Profile' and 'My Site' options have disappeared though, and browsing to the My Sites page results in an error (Could not load user profile). To make matters much worse, it seems to have also broken the Central Administration site. If I try and go to 'Manage Service Applications' I get another error (The specified user or domain group was not found). This error seems to come up on around half of the pages on the Central Administration site. Looking up the error (abb6b174-0f71-413a-a27a-41cdc87b66d0) in the logs I find this: 09/06/2010 15:35:45.44  w3wp.exe (0x0868)                        0x06A0 SharePoint Portal Server       User Profiles                  cm6y High     User Profile Application Proxy failed to retrieve partitions from User Profile Application: Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.UserProfileA

SQL 2005: Error 15401 - Windows NT user or **group** not found

I have a fresh install of Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Standard Edition and SQL Server 2005 x64 on top of that, with Service Pack 3. This server, SERV, is in DOMAINA which trusts (one-way) DOMAINB.

When I try to create a login for a group in my domain, I get the following error:
Msg 15401, Level 11, State 1, Procedure sp_grantlogin, Line 49
Windows NT user or group 'DOMAINA\groupname' not found. Check the name again.

I get the same error whether using "create login [domaina\groupname] from widnows", "sp_grantlogin [domaina\groupname]" or Manangement Studio.
This happens ONLY for groups , both in DOMAINA and DOMAINB domains. I can add individual users from both A and B and local computer. For local computer groups: I can add default Windows groups (like Users, Guests, Event Log Readers) by [BUILTIN\Event Log Readers], etc. but not by SERV\Event Log Readers; for custom created group MyLocal it's the other way around: I can via SERV\MyLocal but not via BUILTIN\MyLocal.

If I add a domain group from either DOMAINA or DOMAINB to a local group, whether my own or builtin, I can login to SQL Server remotely using creditentials of a user who belongs to that group (user DOMAINB\ux belongs to DOMAINB\group and DOMAINB\group to SERV\MyLocal). After sp_grantlogin [serv\mylocal] of cours

People Picker gets error when selecting user from a trusted domain(one way forest trust)

Hello all,   Our current setup is SharePoint 2010 Foundation server in one external forest(Trusting forest), and trying to have users in a separate internal forest(Trusted forest) access the site. The external forest's DC and SharePoint server are in a DMZ separated by a firewall with the internal forest's DC and users. A one way transitive forest trust was successfully created and has been validated. On SharePoint, we're ran the sts commands to set the setapppassword as well as the peoplepicker-searchadforests adding the domain that the SharePoint server is in, as well as the trusted forest. An iisreset was issued after running these commands. In SharePoint, we can then search for users from the trusted domain, and select the users in the Select People page, but when hitting the final Ok, an error is received: An unexpected error has occurred in which a correlation ID is provided. Unable to Customize Custom Lists. Sharepoint Error: User cannot be found.

I am not sure what the best way to put/describe my issue . I am unable to customize my custom list. Steps: 1. Login to sharepoint site. 2. Site Actions -> Site Settings 3. Error 15404 - Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user 'Dev\Administrator', error

SQL Server 2008 R2 with the latest CU floods event log with "An exception occurred while enqueueing a message in the target queue. Error: 15404, State: 19. Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user 'Dev\Administrator', error code 0x54b".

How can I troubleshoot this?

Getting "A domain group is missing for one or more services" error when adding new node to existing

Hey all,

Current configuration:

2-node sql 2005 cluster

windows 2003 enterprise R2 w/ sp2 x64

sql 2005 enterprise x64 SP3

In the process of adding a third node into the existing 2-node cluster, we received the

"A domain group is missing for one or more services.  To install SQL 2005 as a failover cluster, domain groups must be specified for all the clustered services bing installed. To proceed, enter the missiong domain group information."

The existing cluster functions properly and has been running w/o problems for a long while now.  An AD Global Group was created to support the cluster back when the cluster was initially created.

I found different suggestions from people online about this issue, any where from adding registry keys to take trailing blank space from sql resource group name, but none works.

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

"User cannot be found" error when selecting "List Settings" for a list.

I have a simple custom list I created with two fields.  When I try connecting to the list's settings (the listedit.aspx page), I get a "User cannot be found" error.  I get this same error when I click on the workflow settings as well.  All other features of the list appear to be working normally.  There are a couple other lists in my site that exhibit this behavior, but the rest function normally.

The only recent change we made to the site was enabling an SSL certificate.  When my sys admin returns from vacation I'll have him disable SSL for testing purposes, but in the meantime has anyone come across a similar issue?

Domain Group Policy to Map user folder in Sharepoint Library to network drive

This is complicated- and try as I might I can't get it right. I am running SBS 2008 SP2 with WSS 3.0 SP3.

I have my sharepoint site at http://companyweb. I have WebClient and WebPublishing services enabled.

The scenario I am trying for:

I have a document library in Sharepoint called Wellness Boxes. Inside this library each domain user has a folder- these folders are to store personal files. Each folder is configured with permissions via Sharepoint so that only the user and their direct manager has access. When a user enters the library, they only see their own folder.

I am trying to map this situation to network places. I want users to be able to click Start>Computer>Network and see a drive labeled Companyweb. Entering that drive will show them the document library Wellness Boxes, and only their own folder will be visible.

I need to do this at a domain level through Group Policy so it applies to all users and all computers. Drive letters do not matter. Permissions do matter.

Can anyone help me please?

Can't Add Domain User; Error 15401

I just installed SS2K8 Developer on W2K8 R2 (64-bit) and am in the process of configuring/setting up. I can fire up Management Studio locally on the server and log in with as domain admin via Windows Authentication .

When I try to create a login using a domain user, either through the GUI by typing it in or searching for the user via the search button, or via DDL, I get a 15401 error: "Windows NT user or group '<domain>\<user>' not found." This is a fresh install; no logins exist except the <machine>\administrator one I added during install and the builtin ones. I was able to enumerate the domain user accounts via the Search box.

I tried the basics in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324321/en-us and none apply. I can ping the DC, the collation is CI and DNS is okay.

"User cannot be found" error when creating My Site after upgrading to SP2 for MOSS 2007

Hope this is the place for sharepoint gurus?

I upgraded MOSS2007/WSS3 to SP2 and since then I have been unable to get My Site to create new sites for existing domain users.

Some of the domain users created their My Site before the SP2 upgrade and they still work. We just cannot create new My Sites for existing domain users.

Now when we try to create a My Site we get this error:

"There has been an error creating the personal site. Contact your site administrator for more information."

I checked the event logs and usually no error is recorded when this happens so sharepoint does not even give me a breadcrumb (thanks!).

However, on one occassion I did get an event message after fiddling here and there and many attempts at trying to create a My Site, hooray! See below for all the glorious details of the event message, but the basic error is:

"User cannot be found".

I have checked the My Site settings of shared services (SSP1), veiwed user profiles, all the domain users are imported. So I have no idea why when creating a My Site it fails?

I have searched many forums and although they get the same error it seems to be for different reasons so the solutions don't help my situation.

Is there somewhere in Sharepoint that these domain users need to exist? Would I be able to c

MDX Query runs endless if the User is not a member of the Domain Admin Group

Please, before you say "its not possible" read my post. Myself, i couldnt believe it, until i saw the behaviour with my own eyes.
Environment: SSAS 2005, tested with a MDX Query executed in the SQL Server Management Studio.

We deliver a CUBE (SSAS 2005) that we have build for our Billing System (SQL 2005). Nothing tricky on the cube definition. The cube is installed on several customer systems, runs without a problem. On our in-house test server it runs with no problem. I can execute the same MDX Query connected as a User who is a Member of the Domain Admins and with a User who is a "simple" Domain User. The same query performance, the same Resultset, experienced in-house and by many of our customer.

But on the system of one of our customer i have a really strange behaviour. If i connect on the SQL Management Studio with a User that is in the Domain Admin Role (let's call it user "A") the same MDX Query that we use in-house runs without a problem. But on the customer system i cant execute the MDX Query with a User that is not a Member of the Domain Admin Role (let's call this user "B").
The simple Domain User "B" starts the SQL Management Studio and connects to the Analysis Services Instance. No error. In the SQL Management Studio, on the left pane it has the same metadata, dimensions and members

Webservice AddPermission error: User cannot be found

I'm trying to add permissions to a new subsite by the following method from the _vti_bin/Permissions.asmx webservice:

But I get the following error:

  • User Cannot be Found.

I know that the user exists as I'm able to add them through the UI. Can anyone explain what's going on here?

Thanks for the help.

The specified user or domain was not found

I am having an issue with one of the web applications on my sharepoint server. If I try to add a user from central admin, I get the error, "the specified user or domain was not found." I also can't access my BDC because of it. I can get to the BDC page to manage it, but when I go to access the permissions, I get, "Object reference not set to an instance of an object."   When I go to my sharepoint site, I get the same user or domain was not found.

I know for a fact that I can access my Active Directory, since I am building a new web application right now and haven't had any problems. Also, when I look up users in central admin things work fine.  I just started having this issue today when I reprovisioned the user profile synchronization service using these commands:

$syncDBType = "Microsoft.Office.Server.Administration.SynchronizationDatabase"
$upaSAType = "User Profile Service Application"
$syncDB = Get-SPDatabase | where-object {$_.Type -eq $syncDBType}
$upa = Get-SPServiceApplication | where-object {$_.TypeName -eq $upaSAType}

$syncDB.Status = "Offline"
