Permissions Beginner

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 23, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

Hi All,

I've been using basic SQL Server tools for a couple of years now and i'm having to administer my first database now.

I have a completely stand-alone machine with 2 user accounts - Admin and User.

I've developed 7 executable applications, 6 of which are available to the User and all 7 of which are available to the Admin.

I'm assuming that when the User runs one of the executables, the executable assumes the same access rights (i.e. at the moment, the application does not find the database). I Think I have set the User account up as a valid SQL Server Logon via the Security / Logins / New Login... option from the object explorer, however I'm not sure how to restrict them to only Insert, Select and Connect securables - it seems that all I can update is the securables for the server, not the database its self.

I would search the internet for the answer but I'm not sure of the specific terminology to search for.

Thanks in advance

Beginner's book for ado.net 2.0

Can anyone suggest me a book for beginners in ADO.NET 2.0 ?

Beginner: this doesn't make sense to me

Do you need and "empty" script tag in the head to run scripts that are in the body?  Also, can you run JQuery scripts if they're in the <head> tag?  The first sample only works if the JQuery script is in the form (and body) tag, not in the head - even if I add $(document).ready(function() { });

This works

<head runat="server">
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.2/jquery.min.js" />
<script type="text/javascript">
<form id="form1" runat="server">
<a href="">Here is a link</a>
<script type="text/javascript">
$('a').click(function () {
alert("you clicked me!");

This doesn't work.  Notice I removed the second <script> tag from the head

<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head runat="serve

Mobile beginner's inquiry

I've developed web applictions in VB in VS2005 pro and want to get started on developing mobile applications in VB now that I've upgraded to VS2010 pro.  It's proving to be more difficult to get off the ground than I expected.  It would seem that there have been several toolkits for developing mobile applications since NET 2.0 -- some obsolete -- and the web refences I've been going through seem to be a mishmash of broken links, circular references and dead ends.

When I click on toolbox -> choose toolbox items, all of the system.web.ui.mobilecontrols are there.  But they never turn up in my toolbox.  And I can't find a way of beginning a  mobile website project, either.  Nor can I find any examples of mobile ASP.NET development in either the samples included with VS2010 or online at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/dd238515.aspx

My needs are simple: can somebody tell me what additions or configuration changes I need to make to prepare my VS2010 setup for working with ASP.NET 4.0 mobile controls?  And once this is there any good tutorial for learning mobile website develpment that doesn't involve contracting with a third party?  How about a good book for learning the CURRENT tec

Security in .NET: The Security Infrastructure of the CLR Provides Evidence, Policy, Permissions, and

The common language runtime of the .NET Framework has its own secure execution model that isn't bound by the limitations of the operating system it's running on. In addition, unlike the old principal-based security, the CLR enforces security policy based on where code is coming from rather than who the user is. This model, called code access security, makes sense in today's environment because so much code is installed over the Internet and even a trusted user doesn't know when that code is safe.In this article, Don Box explains how code access security works in the CLR. He discusses the kinds of evidence required by policy, how permissions are granted, and how policy is enforced by the runtime.

Setting permissions of a specific SharePoint workflow

We have a very simple workflow whereby an document placed in a public library (INBOX) is moved it to a private library (VERIFY) and then deleted. The workflow works correctly when someone who has access to the VERIFY library drops a record into the INBOX library.  However it does not work when the user does not have access to the VERIFY library.

I was told that I need to "set the AD group associated with a specific SharePoint workflow" but cannot find any reference to this in SPD.

MOSS 07 Installation Quirks - SSRS Connectivity & SSP Permissions

I'm new to MOSS 07 and am currently learning it.  I've done clean installs and post-install configuration a few times now and I've noticed 2 quirks associated with a fresh install.  I'm not sure what is going on or the best way to "fix" them.

1 - I install SQL 05 with SSRS prior to installing MOSS and I always check to make sure that SSRS is configured and I can connect to it in the SQL Management Studio.  Once the Default port 80 Web App is provisioned, however, I can no longer connect to SSRS via the SQL MS.  I understand that this is related to the fact that the default Web App that hosts the SSRS sites is the Default 80 Web Site and that this port is taken over by the SharePoint 80 portal.  My question is, how to handle this.  I understand that I can configure SSRS to run via SP Integration.  However, when I install SSRS 05 initially and prior to installing/configuring MOSS, should SSRS be installed under a separate Web App and Port than the Default?  Does SP Integration restore the ability to connect to SSRS via the SQL Mang. Studio?

2 - In an attempt to get used to a "production" way of doing things, I create Domain Service accounts for both installing MOSS and running the services.  My problem is with the results of using an installation account.  I call it "spinsta

How to write an event to manage permissions on a document while uploading, depending on custom field

I am trying to find a solution to manage permissions on a document, while uploading it into a document library. This event has to be fired if a custom field is populated (it's a check box field).

How to write an event for this, i tried writing ItemAdded event, but this is getting fired as soon as a document is uploaded, before coming to the page, where we populate all the fields and hit check in.

can i capture Check-in event.

Please advise.

MOSS 2007 - "next 100" link missing from permissions pages

We're running two MOSS 2007 environments that are (should be!) identical for Development and Validation.  We don't have Production set up yet to compare...

In DEV, when you go to the Site Settings > View All Site Settings > People and Groups > Groups, you see a "1 - 100 >" link at the top right to page to the next 100 groups.  In VAL, we do not see that link even though we have more than 100 Groups (the list ends on the first page with the letter "l").

Everything we have looked at between the two systems looks identical, has anyone seen something similar and has a fix?  At this point we're waiting until we get the PRD environment set up to compare because we're stumped.  Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

UserPrincipal.FindByIdentity Permissions

I'm attempting to use the System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement library to obtain the UserPrincipal for a particular Active Directory user. I've got the following code: PrincipalContext context = new PrincipalContext(ContextType.Domain, "DomainName"); userPrincipal = UserPrincipal.FindByIdentity(context, IdentityType.SamAccountName, username); This code is running as a valid domain user, but when I execute it I get the following exception: System.DirectoryServices.DirectoryServicesCOMException (0x8007052E): Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. What's interesting is that I can make the following call, using the same context, without a problem: context.ValidateCredentials(username, password, ContextOptions.Negotiate) Ideas?

How to check effective permissions for a user or group for a SQL server object or whole server?

Guys, How do I see effective permissions for a user or group for a SQL server object or whole server? For example, a user is not listed in security/logins, but he is a member of few groups and some of them have assigned permissions on SQL server (again either directly or through membership in other groups) Even when I select an object (a table), check properties/permission – it doesn’t let me select any principal, except those listed on security/logins… Anyway, what is the right way to see effective permissions for a user or group? Sorry for asking such a simple question, I’ve searched but found nothing relevant.

Customized list views and permissions to specific group users

Hi, I have created a custom list with 20 field/columns in wss3.0. I had four user groups(group1, group2,....3.....4) in my site collection with various levels of permissions. I have created four custom views (Group 1 view, Group2 view,...etc)in my list. Each view contains only certain fields out of 20. For example group 1 view contains field 1, 5, 7,10 and 13 of every item in my list.  My requirement is that when a user login, who is a member of group1. he should be able to view only Group1 view fields. He should not able to view other field/columns. I tried creating another field/column called as restricted users and wrote group names in that. In the View edit page I selected " show item when the column 'restricted users' is equl to [Me]. But I did not get it. Kindly help it out any one either programmatically or UI based. Thanks

SQL Agent - service account permissions - SQL Server 2008

Hi @ all   I installed two SQL Server 2008 on Server 2008 R2 Std (principal and mirror) and an AD Server 2008, with sperate service accounts, connect as SA, localy all works fine. I created some agent tasks (PowerShell, T-SQL), but I get some Error massages in the history, that service account of SQL Agent didn't have the permission to query a remote machine(access denied for wmi (HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED)) and linked database(SQLSTATE 42000 Error(7314)). The simple query with SA permissions on the remote machine works and the powershell scripts with the local domain user works too. But not with the SQL Agent. WHY?? Where ist the different between the user account permisions and service account permissions? Which settings are needed? Example: get-wmiobject -class win32_service -computername 192.168.xxx.xxx| where {$_.name -like '*SQL*'} Powershell Console: works                                     SQL Agent Job: access denied I tried some solutions with user rights, group policies and security permissions but nothing works. like: Configuration -Service Accounts, SQL Server or SQL Server Agent service account http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283811/en-us http://msdn2.microsoft.com/

User Permissions

I am in need of some help regarding user permissions. I need users to be able to have read only permissions on all documents except their own, but when i have set this up i notice that the user can still Publish a Major Version. i have 6 department sites, each with their own document library, so i need to create groups for these departments so that i can assign users to, so that they can edit within their own department site but only read in other sites. so how can i set the permissions so that the user is unable to Publish documents and also is unable to delete anything that is not thie own?
