Performance(Load/Stress) testing in the SharePoint 2010?

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 23, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

I have SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise based small farm. Farm consist of 2 servers. All users are in AD. This Intranet portal is currently on development phase and we don't have all 300 users active. There are currenly only 10 users who are part of the development project.

How to test performance of the SharePoint farm?

In past, I used to test performance of SharePoint 2007 with SQL Server Profiler and Windows Server 2003 Performance Monitor. Is this method good enough to measure actual performance? Any better tools for this?

How about load testing of SharePoint 2010 Server?

Is there tools can generate loads and reports?

Any experience about Load testing with Visual Studio 2010?

Load testing tool the Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Administration Toolkit is for testing SharePoint 2007?

Is Load testing tool totally wrong tool for SharePoint 2010 Server?

Load / Stress testing SharePoint with WCAT

Is anyone able to provide a sample WCAT script that can be used to do load-testing for Sharepoint 2010 (actually, 2007 would work as well)?

The Web Capacity Analysis Tool from the IIS team is a great tool for load testing - lightweight, multi-Client-machine... but I cannot see how to get it working for SharePoint (actually, for any type of NTLM Authenticated sites). Any help would be greatly appreciated - I imagine MS has some scripts they've used in the past, but I can't get any response from the forum at the IIS site. The User guide is not that clear on how to set it up for a SharePoint intranet scenario.

query w.r.t to SharePoint 2010 Performance Planning & Extranet Topology

  1.      Which extranet topology to go with in case of exposing Intranet to Remote Employees / Partners ?   My understanding:   There are 3 extranet topologies : Edge Firewall , Back to Back , Split back to back   If Scenario is : a)      Only Employees needs to access Intranet from Home ,we can go for Edge Firewall b)      If partners & Employees , both needs to access Intranet ( it will have some partner sites ) , then we can go for Back to Back OR Split back to back .   Questions: ·         Is Understanding correct ? ·         Is there any factor which can help in making a decision between Back to Back Or Split back to back ?   2.      As part of sizing , I read that we should capture following information -          What should be maximum acceptable CPU utilization in production servers ? ( Example : 70%) -          What will be the concurrent number of users accessing portal during peak hour of a day ? ( Example 1000 users from total of 18000 users ) -          How many request per second are done to portal

Word 2010 crashes everytime I try to load a doc from SharePoint 2007.

Every time I try to load a doc from our sharepoint site, Word stops working and crashes.  I have repaired Office from Programs and Features, I have renamed the WWLIB.DLL as bad and then repairec again (It came back) and I can not find a dupolicate version of the owssupp.dll file.  In fact the only file in the Office 11 is the UCSribe.dll and it is not duplicated in the Office 14 folder.  The Event viewer gives this error Faulting application name: WINWORD.EXE, version: 14.0.4734.1000, time stamp: 0x4b58fb0e Faulting module name: wwlib.dll, version: 14.0.4734.1000, time stamp: 0x4b58fba1 Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x00612406 Faulting process id: 0xc98 Faulting application start time: 0x01cb5110726d8727 Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\WINWORD.EXE Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\wwlib.dll Report Id: b4600a6b-bd03-11df-988f-463500000031   Does anybody have a solution for me? SharePoint 2010 - Performance Point & Dashboard Designer

We have successfully installed SharePoint 2010 onto our dev machine; we have also followed the documented steps for configuring Performance Point; http://blogs.msdn.com/b/performancepoint/archive/2009/11/24/deploying-performancepoint-2010-soup-to-nuts.aspx.  All seems fine however we do not seem to be able to create a connection from Dashboard designer back into SharePoint.  When we check the logs we get the following error Critical   An unexpected error occurred.  Error 5678.  Exception details: Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.SPUpgradeCompatibilityException: There is a compatibility range mismatch between the Web server and database "WSS_Content_PerformancePoint_1", and connections to the data have been blocked to due to this incompatibility. This can happen when a content database has not been upgraded to be within the compatibility range of the Web server, or if the database has been upgraded to a higher level than the web server. The Web server and the database must be upgraded to the same version and build level to return to compatibility range. We have a farm config on a single 64 bit box and SQL Server 2008 loaded.  We have un-installed and re-installed the site collection. Does anyone have any ideas? Eddie Barrett

Getting Exception: Testing Custom Webservice deployed on SharePoint 2010 using VS 2010 Pro

Hi there, I am a newbie in Webservice programming.
The exception:
The Address property on ChannelFactory.Endpoint was null.  The ChannelFactory's Endpoint must have a valid Address specified.
I have read many sites in internet (found unfortunately only for VS2008 and SP2007) and tried many things, but always failed. I really need your help to solve this problem. Thank you in advance.

I am trying to test a custom webservice deployed on Sharepoint 2010:

The webservice can be called: http://localhost/_vti_bin/StructureSearch/StructureSearchService.svc
And I got instructions like below:

svcutil.exe http://localhost/_vti_bin/StructureSearch/StructureSearchService.svc?wsdl

This will generate a configuration file and a code file that contains the client class. Add the two files to your client application and use the generated client class to call the Service. For example:

C# .. and so on

So I created a simple c# console app like following:

Setting up a hardware load balancer between WFEs and App servers in SharePoint 2010

I am looking for any information I can find about setting up a hardware load balancer between WFEs and App servers in SharePoint 2010.

While the load balancing procedure is simple for WFEs since you just set up DNS to point to network load balancer (NLB) and NLB can be configured to load balance between the WFEs, NLB in this case is sitting outside the farm. How will you insert NLB inside the farm?

I know Application Servers can load balance on their own (WFEs can direct traffic to multiple App Servers) but I want to configure a hardware load balancer nonetheless. I have seen architecture diagrams on TechNet which show NLBs between App and WFEs but no guidance on how it will be configured. Since the app servers will be registered as part of the farm (Configuration DB), how do I tell WFEs to direct traffic to NLB rather than to the App servers directly.

thanks

Viewing Video's in Sharepoint 2010--Will it slow down the performance for the end users?

I understand how to upload files to the media web part and creating an asset library, however; i'm trying to figure out where these files are being stored and the performance of the users.  I read the digital asset management library information on technet and couldn't find the exact answer i'm looking for.

So, here's my question:  If I want to upload 10 videos to the asset library, they each may have around 50mb or less for the file size, and we want 200 plus users to access it, will this affect the performance of when these users hit the site?  We want to display the video's without having to buy a media server.  And the main question that will be asked is, who will host the content?  And, where is it residing?  My guess is that tt will be hosted in SP 2010.

I'm trying to incorporate a new intranet portal site for my company that will have a video to be played on the home page of the intranet site and the links will be located on the left and right side of the page with the video webpart in the center.  Will using the Blob cache and bit throttling be sufficient for this request?  I think it will be, I just want to make sure before we role this out.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

SSRS Report Sorting issue in Dashboard created usign Performance point services in sharepoint 2010

I have created a report in SSRS and this report is integrated within a dashboard created using performance point services in sharepoint 2010.

The report is a simple tabular report with 5 coulmns and interactive sorting is enabled on each of them.

Sorting works when the report is viewed separately but gives "Report Server Error" when I try to sort (on any column) inside the dashboard.

I have user IP instead of host name in the report server url.

Please help.

Thanks,

Abbas

SSRS 2008 R2 and Sharepoint 2010 - performance problems

Hi all,

I'm currently in a DWH project using SSRS 2008 R2 x64 in Sharepoint Integrated mode along with Sharepoint 2010, and we're seeing massive performance problems even though traffic on the server is at a bare minimum. We're in development with a maximum of a few users online at any given time and the server itself isn't doing a whole lot...cpu is usually < 20%. We have timed the database queries and 90% of them are taking less than a second to execute while reports takes anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds to load (some heavier reports can occasionally take a lot longer). I am simply unable to get anything to load in less than 5 seconds, even the simples grid from a SELECT TOP 5 * FROM table query takes this long.

The server setup is suboptimal as SQL Server, Reporting Services and Sharepoint are all running on the same virtual machine but with the minimal amount of traffic we have this shouldn't really be a problem. The server is a Win 2008 x64 Datacenter with 4 CPU's and 16GB RAM.

A standard sharepoint page that gets data from the database is returned in milliseconds...why doesn't reporting services do the same? What can I do to increase performance?

SharePoint 2010 Network Load Balancing and Kerberos Authentication

Hello all. Thanks for taking a look at this...

To put it simply, kind of, I have a SharePoint 2010 farm with 1 web application (non default port) using kerberos authentication with 2 load balanced web front end servers.

Example:
web01.domain.com:8090
web02.domain.com:8090
NLB = web.domain.com

The NLB is setup at web.domain.com (on port 80), as mentioned above, and directs traffic to either web server on port 8090.

Notes:
An SPN has been setup for the NLB url with the web applications service account.
Delegation has been setup on the web app account and the web servers.
I am not using host headers for this web app.
I have setup the useapppoolcredentials instead of disabling kernel mode in IIS7 (tried it with it disabled too)

I tried this just in case...Registered SPNs for both web servers, with and without port numbers, and with and without fqdns.

The Problem
Kerberos authentication will not work when the NLB is set at port 80. If I set the NLB to match the web application port, 8090, kerberos authentication works fine and all is well.

This may be an obvious issue, but i cant put my finger on what I am missing.

Simply put, i would just like to have the users type in web.domain.com (the NLB url) instead of having to put in web.dom

Unit Testing SharePoint - Past, Present, and Sporm

As I described in SharePoint: The Wild West of Software Development there is a serious problem when you develop for SharePoint: ensuring quality through unit testing is really, really hard. And that's where a new open source tool just released today called sporm (SharePoint Object Relational Mapper) comes in. While sporm provides many benefits besides simplified unit testing I wanted to focus on this topic first, because sporm's approach, which models the entity framework in the way it supports POCO's, is a unique feature not available with other SharePoint tools like LINQ to SharePoint.

Short Overview of SharePoint Features in Visual Studio 2010

As you probably know, Visual Studio 2010 was announced earlier this week and it contains a lot of cool features and project templates for SharePoint developers. Below is a short overview for some of the SharePoint development related features and project templates.

How to get more information about the exceptions that can happen in SharePoint 2010 projects?

In case there is an exception anywhere in the SharePoint 2010 project (most common place an exception would happen is during deployment of your SharePoint project, custom deployment configuration or custom deployment steps), there's a registry key EnableDiagnostics available for you to use.
