Search service doubt.

Posted By: Posted Date: September 23, 2010 Points: 0 Category :SharePoint

In our MOSS 2007 farm, both services are started:
Windows SharePoint Services Search
Office SharePoint Server Search

Are both of them really needed?

I think... we need only 'Office SharePoint Server Search' in MOSS 2007.

"Your search cannot be completed because of a service error. Try ..."

i have a problem with search function where everytime i search any file/doc the error message "Your search cannot be completed because of a service error. Try your search again or contact your administrator for more information." occurred. I realized that there are items in central admin but it is "not available" in my site. I already follow several guides that had been provided in this forum but still the same. Even, i already create new SSP and configure the search scope, content source and also crawling.

FYI, i used Microsoft Sharepoint 2007.

Hope anyone could help me to solve this problem. Thanks.

How do I search a SUBSITE using the spsearch Web service in WSS 3.0?

I have figured out how to access the spsearch web service API, and created a query packet like this:

<QueryPacket xmlns='urn:Microsoft.Search.Query'>

However, it's returning results for my home collection. I need a way to filter for any sub-site collection. Is this possible? I have been searching for a couple hours and so far have no clue. I have tried entering other parameters inside the QueryText field as I see them on my actual SharePoint search, but this method does not work here.

This is not for a "getlistitems" call. I am calling "spsearch" using the "query" or "queryex" action. Thanks.

Error: The search request was unable to connect to the Search Service.

When attempting a search, I get the the error message "The search request was unable to connect to the Search Service. " The search sevice has been started in Central Administration. Does anyone have suggesting as to how to troubleshoot this issue? Thank you in advance for your help.

SharePoint 2010 Search Service Application: "All Content" scope contains 0 items?

I've encountered a nasty bug in our setup. Our Search Service Application manages to crawl all content just fine. However, the scopes don't work. We've got a total of 570 items currently in our crawl database. 350 of these are of class 'People', and appear in the 'People' scope. The remaining 220 items should appear in 'All Content' as part of the intra (sites, documents etc), however the 'All Content' scope reports 0 items. I've tried the following: -Creating custom scopes (still 0 items) -Recreating the Search Service Application twice -Tried different accounts as the content access account. -Ensuring that the content access accounts do have 'full read policy' -Checked the crawl log for successful content (such as sites and documents). However, despite my efforts I still get 0 items for 'All Content'. Has anyone else encountered this problem, or do you have any recommendation for us? Currently I don't see any other option than to reinstall everything.

problem rename sharepoint 2010 search service application admin database

Hi all, i have a problem that hopefully someone has an answer to. i am not too familiar with sharepoint so please excuse my ignorance. we have sharepoint 2010 on a windows 2008r2 server. everything seems to work fine. but as you know, the default database names are horrendous. i have managed to rename all of them, except for the "search service application" admin database. the default is: Search_Service_Application_DB_
the other 2 databases (crawl and property) were renamed without a problem. we are following the article from technet on how to rename the search service admin db (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-nz/library/ff851878%28en-us%29.aspx). it says to enter the following command: $searchapp | Set-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication -DatabaseName "new database name" -DatabaseServer "dbserver" however, i get an error about identity being null. no big deal, i add the -Identity switch and the name of my search service application. but the real problem comes the error it throws: Set-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication : The requested database move was aborted as the associated search application is not paused. At line:1 char:54 + $searchapp | Set-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication <<<< -Identity "Search Service Application" -DatabaseName "ShareP

Access denied to Search Service Application

I just "upgraded" my installation of SharePoint 2010 Foundation with Search Server Express 2010. During the installation, I was able to access and configure the Search Service Application. However, a day later, I cannot access the application management page: I get an access denied error. I am the farm administrator, so supposedly I am supposed to have access to the management page. I've also tried adding my login to the "Full Control" group of the Search Application; it gives me the same error. It appears that the only account that can access the administration page is the service/system account. Obviously this would not be ideal. I've tried looking around for logs to see if anything is amiss, but there appears to be nothing logged. What gives? How do I fix it?

Search service is not able to connect to the machine that hosts the administration component

I encounter the error above when trying to set up Sharepoint Server Search. I have tried both setting up search manually through Central admin (just selecting default for everything) as well as through Powershell (using this: http://stsadm.blogspot.com/2009/12/creating-sharepoint-2010-enterprise.html). I'm using the farm admin as Search account as well as account for Application pools, so I guess permissions should not be the issue.Creating new Search service application seems to be successful, but when going to Searchadministration after creation, then System status displays the error above. Event log does add any info and just displays same error message ("SearchApi.cs throws exception:The search service is not able to connect to the machine that hosts the administration component. Verify that the administration component 'db397ab0-d9b0-46c4-9077-dc8be62bf586' in search application 'TNS Enterprise Search Service Application' is in a good state and try again."). I have found this http://blog.fpweb.net/sharepoint-2010-server-search-troubleshooting/ stating that the solution is not to use MSDN version of Windows 2008, but does give any explanation why.Any ideas would be appriciated.Best regardsThomas

Problem With SharePoint Designer 2010 and the Search.asmx Web Service

I've created a web service datasource on a 2010 site using SharePoint Designer. When I try to make use of the datasource on a page I get the "The server returned a non-specific error when trying to get data from the data source..." message. The datasource connects to _vti_bin/search.asmx. I am using the QueryServiceSoap port and operation QueryX. I've tried various queryXml strings, including site & people searches using both SQL and keyword syntax. eg <QueryPacket xmlns="urn:Microsoft.Search.Query" Revision="1000"><Query domain="QDomain"> <SupportedFormats><Format>urn:Microsoft.Search.Response.Document.Document</Format></SupportedFormats> <Context> <QueryText language="en-US" type="MSSQLFT"> SELECT Size, Rank, Path, Title, Description, Write, Filename, Description, Author FROM scope() WHERE CONTAINS ('"Lorum"') AND ( ("SCOPE" = 'All Sites') ) ORDER BY "Rank" DESC </QueryText> </Context> <Range><StartAt>1</StartAt><Count>20</Count></Range> <EnableStemming>false</EnableStemming> <TrimDuplicates>true</TrimDuplicates> <IgnoreAllNoiseQuery>true&l

Search Service Application missing in SharePoint 2010

I installed SharePoint 2010 (Enterprise edition), enabled Enterprise features but it is missing Search Service Application when I look under Central Administration > Application Management > Manage Service Application. When I click on New it doesn't even list "Search Service Application". When I goto Upgrade and Patch Management > Check Product and Patch Installation Status, it tells me that "Microsoft Search Server 2010 Core" was Installed. Under Manage services of server, "Sharepoint Foundation Search" is started. Does anyone have an idea why the "Search Service Application" is missing and how can I install it?

Search Server Express 2010 - Access Denied when attempting to manage Search Service Application or P

I first noticed this error with the Search Service Application when I was no longer able to use the search portal, but have since noticed the issue with the PowerPoint Service Application. When I navigate in Central Administration to either the "Farm Search Administration" or the "Manage service applications" pages and attempt to manage the "Search Service Application", I get this error: Error: Access Denied Current User You are currently signed in as: WHEELERS\MyUserName Sign in as a different user I have tried removing the service application and re-adding it, changing the application pool to running under an existing application pool as the farm administrator, as another application pool with the same identity as the primary web application, and as another application pool running under the SP-SearchService identity. The big recent change with SharePoint, aside from fixing the previous issue where I was incorrectly using CNAMEs with Kerberos, was to switch the main web application to claims authentication. That site correctly works with claims based authentication and Kerberos.

Sharepoint 2010 Search service removal and reinstall

In my attempt to recover from a database restore to a new server I was able to get most of the functionality to work with the data that was in my restore. However Search service was not able to get connected and since it was a new install there should not have been much in the search database so it was not important enough to try and figure out the issue. So, I stopped the Foundation search service with no problem and then tried to stop the search service and it gave me the following message stating : Removing the search service from a server must be done within the context of a search service application. To temporarily reclaim resources used by the search service, Vist the Content Sources page and select "Pause all Crawls." To unprovision the search service from this machine, modify the topology of each search service application and remove all components from this server. Click OK to go to the Manage Service Applications page where you can select a Search Service Application to Configure. deleted the service app and tried to reinstall the search service since this was a new install to begin with however I could never get the regular service to start correctly. However there was no search service installed in the services section. It would not allow me to stop the service which is under the Ce

Sharepoint Search and Secure Store Service not working

Hi There I am having issues with a few Sharepoint Services When I try to search for a document on any SharePoint site, I recieve an "Internal Server Error Exception". However when I checked the log files, I couldn't find any error messages matching with the given correlation ID. The search was working 2-3 weeks ago. Also 2 weeks ago, I started receiving warnings in the Health Analyzer saying “The Security token service is not available”. I am wondering if the security token service breaking down is related to the search issues, and if so what suggestions I could try to fix this issue. I am also unable to access the secure store service. In Central Administration->Application Management->Manage Service Applications, I try to click on the Secure Store Service, but there is no Proxy attached to the service, and I receive a message “No Secure Store Service Application Proxy ID was found”. When I check the Logfile, I receive these errors: 08/10/2010 11:11:32.94 w3wp.exe (0x18E4) 0x0ADC SharePoint Foundation &nb

Team Foundation Server and WSS 3.0 SharePoint Service Search not visible

I am having issues with setting up SharePoint Search service on the TFS 2008 server WSS 3.0. The Windows SharePoint Service Search service doesn't appear in Central Administration>Operations>Services on Server page. Only the Central Administration, Windows SharePoint Services Incoming E-Mail, and Windows SharePoint Services Web Application appear. I have Windows SharePoint Service Search running through Services in Windows and still it doesn't appear on the page to configure it. The service account that this service running under has db_reader role access to the WSS_Content database and is a db_owner for the WSS_AdminContent and WSS_Config database as well as for the WSS_Search database. I have executed iisreset and even rebooted the server to no avail. The installation/set up of TFS was done prior to me join the team. It was a default set up with dual servers. The Event Logs show nothing out of the ordinary to help me troubleshoot the issue. Does anyone have any other suggestions I should try or other things I should be looking for? Thank you in advance, WillWill Piedmont

Search request unable to connect to the Search Service.

I have searched through other similiar topics and have not been able to get it working again properly. I've tried deleting the Search Service account out and all associated information and created a new one. My crawl logs show that they are successfull and that I have content available in my local sites, as well as my people listed. I have disabled loopback checks, given the default content access account owner access on the databases. Everytime I do a search, I get that error message listed as the subject. I'm running a 4 server farm setup with 1 DB, 1 App, and 2 WFE's. Everything was working fine and now I can't get back working right. I have hammering at it all day and need some additional input of where to look. I'm no SharePoint expert by any means, but I'm slowly getting used to everything. Please help!
