Do I need free space when doing full database restore in SQL Server 2005?

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 23, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

I have a drive 'F' with 40G free space. I try to restore a database whose data + log file size is 60G.

The restore fails. Is it because a full restore needs  free disk space of 60G in this case?

SQL Server 2005 Restore a 110G database takes too long

Hello ,

I am not sure this is the right place to ask SQL Server restore question or not.

If not, please move my question to the related forum.

My question is: I have a database around 110G, I'd like to restore to my test environment, but it takes me around 7 hours to restore. Is it normal? how can I make the restore faster?

SQL2008 - Cannot Restore a new database from a full backup of a different one, database in use

I am trying to restore a brand new database from a copy of another one and am encountering an error message stating: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The file <Backup source database file location> cannot be overwritten.  It is being used by database <Backup Source Database>. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) I am running the Restore procedure with the REPLACE option and am wondering why it is stating that the source database is the database in use when I am trying to restore and overwrite a completely different database. This issue happens when running the replace both in C# using SMO and when manually restoring with SqlServer Management Studio Interesting note is, the original source database is created / deployed using a database project within VisualStudios 2010 and then deployed to SqlServer through VisualStudios. Any thoughts on why this is happening? Thanks in advance for any help!

Failure in restoring an database from tape - SQL Server 2005

Hello everyone, we are trying to restore one of our datebase from tape using the T-Sql commands. Using the GUI results in an timeout. The command we are using to start the restore is: RESTORE DATABASE RECOV FROM Tape = '\\.\tape0' WITH  FILE=2, RECOVERY, NOUNLOAD, STATS=5, MOVE 'xxx_OPL_xxxx_ZEELAND' TO 'K:\RECOVER\data\RECOV.mdf', MOVE 'xxx_OPL_xxxx_ZEELAND' TO 'K:\RECOVER\log\RECOV_log.ldf', REPLACE the restore proces start without any problem, only ending with this: Processed 2598808 pages for database 'xxx_OPL_xxxx_ZEELAND', file 'xxxx_PROD_Data' on file 2. Processed 3 pages for database 'xxxx_OPL_xxxx_ZEELAND', file 'xxxx_PROD_Log' on file 2. Msg 3229, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 Request for device '\\.\tape1' timed out. Msg 3213, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Unable to unload one or more tapes. See the error log for details. Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. In the eventlog, the following is recorded: BackupTapeFile::UnloadTape: PrepareTape(UNLOCK) failure on backup device '\\.\tape0'. Operating system error 21(The device is not ready.). For as far we can judge, the tapedrive is functioning without problems. Using the same tape in an other tapedrive on an different server results in the same error. Hardware used: HP Proliant Server (DL580) with additional SCSI interface card HP StorageWorks LTO 4 tapedriv

SQL Server 2005 Log Shipping and subsequent FULL backups that are needed

Afternoon,   I have a few Log Shipped DBs that are working great.   Currently they are set to fire off every 15 minutes 24/7.   My question is this ... I need to get FULL backups of the source DBs in order to restore them on certain Dev boxes.   If I were to execute the full backup on one of these Log Shipped DBs ... how would it affect the log shipping process?   Is there a special method to accomplish this?   As a side note, what would be some concerns/issues if in being able to create the FULL backups and not interupt log shipping, I were to create the backup using a 3rd party tool like Quest LiteSpeed?   I sure wish we were on Enterprise, then I could create a mirror and then snapshot off it to create my backups BUT ... that is not the case as we stand today.   Thanks

Restore 2005 database on 2008 R2 Trial

I've downloaded SQL Server 2008 R2 Trial and installed it on Windows Server 2008 trial running under Virtual PC on XP. I've made backups of databases on my SQL Server 2005 and tried to restore them using a) the wizard - results in a messagebox saying "Specified cast is not valid" and no backup sets are available in the Restore Database window. b) using T-SQL - results in Msg 3183, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 RESTORE detected an error on page (0:0) in database "dp" as read from the backup set. Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. Using the wizard and RESTORE on 2005 for the same database backup works fine. c) Detach on 2005 and Attach on 2008 results in: SQL Server detected a logical consistency-based I/O error: incorrect pageid... Detach and Attach worked fine on 2005 and DBCC CHECKDB revealed no errors. Thanks for any info...

database size limit about SQL Server 2005 Express

I know that there is a size limit (4 GB) for SQL Server 2005 Express, but I am not quite sure if the limit is applied for only ONE database data file or for ALL the database data, suppose I have two databases DB1 and DB2, so which of the following statement is correct? A. The size limit for DB1 is 4GB, and the size limit for DB2 is also 4GB, so if DB1 is 3G and DB2 is 3.5G,that will be OK. B. The total size for both DB1 and DB2 can not be larger than 4GB, which means if DB1 is 3G, then DB2 can not be large than 1G.

SQL Server database restore with multiple logicalfiles by using t-sql

Hi,   I have set of database backups created in the production sql server 2005. I need restore these backups into another sql server 2005 by using t-sql script(stored procedure). Each database will have different number of logical files in it. The physical location of the target server may be different for these logical files. I know that i should use WITH MOVE 'YourMDFLogicalName' TO 'D:DataYourMDFFile.mdf' clause. Now i want to know how would i put it in a t-script stored procedure such a way that it automatically identifies all the logical files and create a physical file on the target server. User will supply source of bakup file and target folder for mdf, ldf, etc files. Do i need to populate the sql query as string by looping through all the logical files? If so how would i execute the populated sql query as string ?  Mr Genius

Shrink database log file sql server 2005

Hi, I am trying to shrink log file for a testing database. This database will be restored with production database periodically. When i tried to create backup of the log file Processed 0 pages for database 'hcbeta', file 'HC_log' on file 6. The log was not truncated because records at the beginning of the log are pending replication. Ensure the Log Reader Agent is running or use sp_repldone to mark transactions as distributed. BACKUP LOG successfully processed 0 pages in 0.423 seconds (0.000 MB/sec). I tried EXEC sp_repldone @xactid = NULL, @xact_segno = NULL, @numtrans = 0, @time = 0, @reset = 1 Resulted with error:Unable to execute procedure. The database is not published. Execute the procedure in a database that is published for replication. So tried to publish the database using EXEC sp_dboption 'hcbeta', 'Publish', 'true' resulted error mesage:Msg 15242, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_dboption, Line 138 Database option 'Publish' is not unique. and retrived duplicate_options as "merge Publish" ,"Publish" Plesae help me in shrinking my database log file. Error when running an SQL script to restore a database on SQL Server 2008 R2 Express

Hi, At work, I use SQL Server 2008 Express running on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3. At home, I also use SQL Server 2008 Express running on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3. Whenever I do work on the database at work, I usually restore the database at home (or vice versa) I have been using the following SQL scripts to back up the database and to restore the same database (at work or at home). BackupRealEstate.sql USE Master BACKUP DATABASE [RealEstate] TO DISK = N'F:\My Documents\My Database\RealEstate.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, INIT, NAME = N'RealEstate-Full Database Backup', SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10 GO RestoreRealEstate.sql USE Master RESTORE DATABASE [RealEstate] FROM DISK = N'F:\My Documents\My Database\RealEstate.bak' WITH  FILE = 1, NOUNLOAD, REPLACE, STATS = 10 GO Everything worked fine until I replaced my 8yo home computer with a newer and faster one. My new home computer is running Windows 7 Home Premium and I use the latest SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. When I tried to run the above restore SQL script, I got the following error message: Msg 3101, Level 16, State 1, Line 2 Exclusive access could not be obtained because the database is in use. Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 2 RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. There was no other application/process using this database. Can someone please help me? Regards,
