Go Global: Make the .NET World a Friendlier Place with the Many Faces of the CultureInfo Class

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

CultureInfo is a complex .NET class whose objects are used for resource loading, formatting, parsing, casing, sorting, and other conventions that change as the language, location, or writing system is changed. It can be tricky to use correctly in every situation. Here Michael Kaplan explains some common scenarios in which you will use CultureInfo and provides information about the behavior, best practices, and consequences of a wrong decision.

Server Farms: Application Center 2000 Offers World-Class Scalability

Application Center 2000 simplifies the deployment of a Microsoft .NET-based application to clusters, which are shared-nothing, loosely coupled computers that appear as one virtual computer. This allows all the computers in Application Center 2000 clusters to provide the same service or Web application at the same time. This article explains network load balancing and component load balancing for COM+ components with Application Center 2000. Accessing the features of Application Center 2000 though the MMC snap-in interface and the command-line interface for batching administrative tasks is also covered.

How to make an array of class objects in Visual Basic

How can I make an array of objects in VB.net. Here is the requirement.Basically I have a class named hotel. I need to dynamically add customersto the hotel class using the Customer class. So basically if in the Hotelclass I can have an array of Customer objects that would be great. How can I do this in VB .net ? jquery validation error message - place in the specified div whose class is putmehere !

I decided to use jquery validations because asp.net validation controls are so crazy inside the update panel.

But I need to plase the error messages in the specified div whose class is putmehere ! I am unable to do that. here is my code;

<asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="HeadContent" Runat="Server">
    <script src="../JQuery/jquery-1.4.2.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <script src="../JQuery/Validation/jquery.validate.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript">
        $(document).ready(function() {
                rules: {
                    <%=TextBox1.UniqueID %>: {
                        minlength: 2,
                        required: true
                     <%=TextBox2.UniqueID %>: {
                        required: true,
                }, messages: {
                    <%=TextBox1.UniqueID %>:{
                        required: "* Required Field *",
                        minlength: "* Please enter atleast 2 characters *"

What scenarios make us to create static class and static methods?

I am aware of the terminology "Static Member", "Static Class" and "Static Method"

Give some examples, What scenarios make us to use or create Static member, Static Class and Static Method?

Application variable or static class for global string?

I need to keep a global variable throughout the whole time the user is at my site, but do I use Application or a static class? The string variable should store a region name and my site makes a few changes depending on which region that has been set.

I read that Application was mainly for classic ASP, but I also read that a static class cannot be instantiated at runtime (e.g. when the user has logged in).

So, have I got something wrong here and which solution do I use?

Class Diagrams

Class diagrams show the static structure of the systems. Classes define the properties of the objects which belong to them. These include:

Attributes - (second container) the data properties of the classes including type, default value and constraints.

Hello World to C# Threading Part 1

In this post we will see how we can implement simple threading. Why do we need threading? When you want you application to do more then one thing at same time, then you need to implement threading. One usual and common scenario would be when your application needs to get data from some other resource like web services and you don't want you application GUI to be freeze during this time. In that sort of case you will run the code to access web services in separate thread so your application GUI won't freeze. The System.Threading namespace .NET provide interfaces to implement multi threading.

Global Exception Handling with ASP.NET

After your global exception handler has done its work, you'll want to redirect the users of your website to a friendly page that tells them that something has gone wrong, and then provide them with customer support information as well as a link back to your web application's home page.

Creating a Simple Class in C#

The second article in the C# Object-Oriented Programming tutorial describes how classes are created in C# and how behaviour, in the form of publicly visible and private, hidden methods can be added. This demonstrates some of the uses of encapsulation

Static Class for Beginners

In general, the members of a class can be accessed by instance of that class when they are in public, but there comes a situation to access or call members of a class without an instance and this can be achieved by declaring them as static

abstract away the source of the connection string using a class with a static property.

ASP.NET provides a configuration system we can use to keep our applications flexible at runtime. In this article we will examine some tips and best practices for using the configuration system for the best results.

The element of a web.config file is a place to store connection strings, server names, file paths, and other miscellaneous settings needed by an application to perform work. The items inside appSettings are items that need to be configurable depending upon the environment, for instance, any database connection strings will change as you move your application from a testing and staging server into production.

Let's abstract away the source of the connection string using a class with a static property.

MessageQueue Class

This sample demonstrates two way communications using message queuing between a device application and a desktop application. One application sends book order messages to a message queue and another application receives these book orders from the message queue and responds to the device queue that the orders have been processed.

Beginner: this doesn't make sense to me

Do you need and "empty" script tag in the head to run scripts that are in the body?  Also, can you run JQuery scripts if they're in the <head> tag?  The first sample only works if the JQuery script is in the form (and body) tag, not in the head - even if I add $(document).ready(function() { });

This works

<head runat="server">
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.2/jquery.min.js" />
<script type="text/javascript">
<form id="form1" runat="server">
<a href="">Here is a link</a>
<script type="text/javascript">
$('a').click(function () {
alert("you clicked me!");

This doesn't work.  Notice I removed the second <script> tag from the head

How to change the default page base class?

I've tried setting the <pages pageBaseType="DynamicWebPage" /> value in web.config, but when I response.write out the page type, I'm still getting Microsoft.WebPages.WebPage.

I'm simply trying to sub-class WebPage and add some additional functionality such as a dynamic PageData dictionary similar to Phil Haack's dynamic ViewData dictionary.

Event ID 1011 - DefaultAppPool World Wid Web Pub. Serv. fatal communication error

We have a Windows 2003 server running IIS6 1.1 Framework. We have also installed a DNS and Active Directory in the same machine.

We're randomly getting the error you can see below. Sometimes it causes the recycling of process w3wp.exe (which on my understanding represents the application pool worker processd) and other times results on this process hanging and not responding to any request. To do iisrest temporarly solves the problem.

We were pointed to a possible permissions problem between the user we were runnig the DefaultAppPool with and registry entries used by the iis. We noticed the default predifined user we used, Network Service, wasn't found in the Active Directory, so we changed it by the default configurable user, IWAM_MACHINE_NAME, which is under the IIS_WPG Active Directory Grupo, which, in theory has the correct permissions to run the application pool.

Well, none of this worked and we are still getting this error.

This is driving us crazy and think the problem might have to do with having the Domain Controller/Active Directory and the IIS6 running on the same machine. We'll try now uninstalling this DC pointing to another one to see what happens.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
