VS2010 and the MvcBuildViews Setting Don't Work Together

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 23, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

Hi, I was having a very strange transient error after upgrading our project to VS2010.  After days of severe frustration I've honed in on the problem...

It appears that there's a laundry list of people running into rough the same issue: adding the "MvcBuildViews" to the project in VS2010 (or, in my case, if it was there before upgrading) causes a weird error the suddenly appear in the build output... but only some of the time (!):

Error 410 It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. web.config 100

Given that most/all of the results from that search above are about people having this error, I believe it's safe to say there's a known issue requiring a fix or workaround.  Can someone from MSFT please update on an ETA for this fix and/or post a known workaround?

If it's necessary that I contact Microsoft PSS I will do so, but I'm hoping I can avoid that since it will be time-consuming...

Thanks very much for help in advance!

Converted reports don't work anymore in VS2010

Hi, I have an web application which in converted from vs2008 to vs2010. This app. has one simple reports, which is also converted. Now I have a few problems.The converted report doesn't render anymore. Somehow the dataset I used is not visible to the report anymore. So I decided to delete this datasource and create a new one, using the new interface in VS 2010. The annoying with this is that the new dataset, which is created when I follow the wizard, in the root of the application. As soon as I move this dataset to a folder (in my case the DataSet-folder), the reports doesn't see the fields anymore. So I copied the dataset back to the root, to solve this problem.However, when I render the report, i got an error message saying "A data source instance has not been supplied for the data source 'name-of-the-dataset'"I tried to search the inet, but I cannot find any possible solution.Does anyone of you know how to solve this issue? Or provide me with some links showing good examples.Sorry, but I was able to find the datasource problem myself. What I still would like to know if it is possible to change the location of the DataSet. I don't like the dataset to be in the root of my application.TIA

SSIS 2005 & 2008 BIDS and VS2005/2008 Will VS2010 work with either SSIS package?

I've read the old posts about having to have the BIDS version match the SSIS package version. My question is with VS2010 is there any change? Can I edit either of the old versions of SSIS packages in VS2010 or do I have to have 3 versions of Visual Studio/BIDS on my machine? TIA J

Looking for guidance: wanting to work with AJAX architecture

I'm starting a small website that will be backed by a database, and will allow a small number of users to authenticate and select an entry in the database, and then view (and optionally update) a corresponding entry (think master-detail).

I have some flexibility in how I'll do this, but I'd really like to incorperate some newer AJAX style coding, eliminating some page postbacks. I think this is a great opportunity to learn the concepts well.

I'll probably go with an ASP.NET 4.0 site. From what I've seen there are MANY ways to go about this:

-WCF Data Services to expose the data, and consume in ASP.NET

-Page methods to expose the data, separate method to update the data

-I'd rather avoid the UpdatePanel because I'm really looking for a full hands-on approach, with learning client side scripting being an objective as well.

Beyond that, it seems that one can use jQuery to build clientside templates, but also one can use the ASP.NET AJAX template engine (in ASP.NET 4.0 I believe).

A concern I have: users should only be able to work with the data exposed via these endpoints if they are logged into the website. Hopefully I can somehow reuse the ASP.NET forms authentication cookie for this purpose.

Well, I hope I've posted enough to a

animate effect work but the render items are messed up.

Hi all,

     I have a very unique problem, humm i think. I am using a jquery effect that animate bounce effect, i have a line in my javascript pageLoad function $("#UserBrowserInfoDIV").show('bounce'); - the effects run smoothly but what it does is mess up the bolded text in the div. I have try the items inside the div without bolding and it works fine and no render problem but when bolded the text that are bolded is quite messed up, and barely readable.

Please let me know is there anything else i can do i really would like use this effect.

P.S all the effect have the same render problem, and i am using ie8 under compatibility mode.

VS2010 Professional .NET 4.0 Remote Debugging ASP Website Project

Trying to remote debug ASP website from VS2010 Pro to Windows Server 2003 machine.  Specifically, trying to debug a Web Service, but breakpoint says, "The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document."  This happens for all compiled code though.  I have read this is due to missing PDB files and the work around is to manually copy them, as noted here.  Problem is, I cannot find any PDB files for my project, except referenced libraries, which I can remote debug.

  • web.config has <compilation debug="true">
  • Debugger is attached to wewp.exe process on remote server
  • Installed VS2010 remote debugger from DVD (as I can remote debug referenced libraries)

This is beyond frustrating.  I migrated my code from VS2008 .Net3.5 to VS2010 .Net4.0 to take advantage of the inherent multithreading framework.  Debugging works when using local host and was stable until deployment to test server.

Thanks in advance,

How can I be sure that my entire project is up-to-date and free of errors in VS2010?

Seems like a stupid question, but I will go to Build > Build Solution many many times and the build will succeed many many times, then I will put in a minor syntax error and the build will fail, BUT the build will not fail because of the minor syntax error; it will fail because of an unresolved type that I put in about twenty compiles ago. And then I will fix the minor syntax eror, and the compiler will still complain about the unresolved type. Here is my code:

<%@ Register TagPrefix="FTB" Namespace="FreeTextBoxControls" Assembly="FreeTextBox" %>
  <form runat="server">
  Hello World!!

Pretty simple, really. I go to Buld > Build WebApplication1 and it runs OK. Now, if I put in a minor syntax error, such as substitute "forrrrrrrm" for "form" and then try to Build Solution, it complains not about the misspelled word, but about the FreeTextBox. And then if I correct the misspelled wird, it still complains about the FreeTextBox. Which leads me to believe that Building the Solution does not check absolutely 100% everything that needs to be checked. Is there a more thorough way of compiling a program that I need to use?

Category attribute of user control property does not work correctly in categories tab.

I have a User Control (ascx) and a property which a want to display in my categories tab in Visual Studio in the category named "Styles".

[Category("Styles"), DefaultValue(""), Description("The value for formating something.")]
public String MyFormatProperty
set { /* the code for set */; }
get { /* the code for get */; }

And here is the problem: Actually I do not need a get, because I only have to set the property (write only property). But when I omit the get, the property is displayed in the "Misc" category in the categories tab in Visual Studio. Only when I code the get as well, then the property is displayed correctly in the "Styles" category in the categories tab in Visual Studio.

Does anybody know why? How can I display the category correctly only with set?

Thanks, S.

Setting default localization

I ever thought that I can set a default localization if the users one (which is set in the browser) isn't available.

I've implemented my localresource files for localization. The start.aspx.resx contains all texts and elements for German use and the start.aspx.en.resx for English users. When I switch the language in the browser settings from German to English everything works fine and the english text is displayed. But when I switch to an other language which is not German or English, it takes defaulty the german resource files.

I've set

UICulture="auto:en-US" Culture="auto:en-US"

as well, but it didn't assume the .en resource file automatically. (For example when I enter the website and switch the browser language to French or Italian it should take the english resource files.)

Thanks and regards,

vs2010 web deployment project restarts w3svc even when restartwwwservice = false

We've updated some of our projects from VS2008 to VS2010.  When these projects are deployed the w3svc is restarted on the target machine, even when restartwwwservice = false in the vdproj file.

This was a problem in 2008 until SP1 (http://forums.asp.net/p/1300097/2534736.aspx).  Does this same problem exist in VS2010?

This is a major problem for us -  we need to be able to deploy projects without restarting IIS.

I've tried creating a new web deployment package and setting the restartWWWService field to false, but this still does a restart when it's installed.

Has anyone come across this problem in VS2010?
