SQLExpress 2008 R2 64bit using NewName results in logical filename losing last letter in Backup

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 22, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

We have a problem that is only occurring on the 64 bit edition of SQL 2008 R2 (the 32 bit R2, and 64 bit original are fine).

As part of our install we restore a database called TaxMasterFresh’ and rename it to ‘TaxMaster’. We have a step to rename the logical files of the database to complete the operation:

Compatibility problem: an "sql server 2008 R2" db backup cannot be restored to an "sql server 2008"

To verify if the "2008 R2" version can be restored back to a "2008" dbserver I make an experiment:  construct a database on R2 version ( version : 10.50.xxx )  and backup it; then I try to restore the db backup to a "sql server 2008" db-server ( version : 10.0.xxx ) but get failed. Error message is as shown: The database was backed up on a server running version 10.50.1600. That version is incompatible with this server, which is running version 10.00.2531. Either restore the database on a server that supports the backup, or use a backup that is compatible with this server.   Originally I want to upgrade a "2008" server to "2008 r2" , but this problem withdraws me: if I do so , I am afraid all the existing clientuser's dbs cannot be backed up to themselves if they don't have "2008 r2" locally:   if a database is backed up under "2008 r2" environment whereas client user only has "2008" db server, does it mean he cannot restore it anymore?   So I wonder if there is an approach that helps me to create a "backward-compatible" database; when creating database on wizard there is an option to choose "compatibility level" but I don't think it meets my requirement..    Anyone can help me on this ??

MSAS 2005 vs 2008 - different results of an UPDATE CUBE instruction

Hi ALL!   When moving from SSAS2005 to SSAS2008 I have a problem with write enabled cubes. On SSAS2005 UPDATE CUBE instruction occures almost instantaneously but on SSAS 2008 this takes few seconds. I created a cube with one dimension and one measure for testing. No aggregations, fact table initially empty, measure has 3 elements. Profiler shows that SSAS2008 UPDATE CUBE instruction initiates cube processing, but SSAS2005 doesn’t do this. What's wrong? Please, help! Backup SQL Server 2008 R2 Restore on SQL 2008

I have a SQL Server 2008 R2 instance that I need to backup and restore onto a SQL 2008 instance. When I attempt to restore the back up (.bak) database from the R2 SQL server onto the SQL 2008 server I get the following message: The database was backed up on a server running version 10.50.1600. That version is incompatible with this server, which is running version 10.00.2531. Either restore the database on a server that supports the backup, or use a backup that is compatible with this server. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) How can i backup the SQL 2008 R2 database to be compatible with SQL 2008?Ian Ceicys

Unable to Backup Service Master Key on SQL 2008 Express

Hi I am attempting to do a backup of the Server Master Key but it fails. The error message I am receiving is as follows: Msg 15240, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot write into file 'C:\Users\harvey norman\Documents\SQL Server Management Studio Express\SQLEXPR2008ADV_ServerMasterKey'. Verify that you have write permissions, that the file path is valid, and that the file does not already exist. The PC I am running SQL 2008 Express (64 bit) is running on Vista Ultimate (64-bit) SP2. The SQL I wrote is as follows: BACKUP SERVICE MASTER KEY TO FILE = 'C:\Users\harvey norman\Documents\SQL Server Management Studio Express\SQLEXPR2008ADV_ServerMasterKey' ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = '??' GO Note that the ?? represents the password but is not actually the password for obvious reasons. I am logged in to the PC as a user with Admin permissions.  I had a look at the destination folder, and it shows I have full control. So, I am mystified. If somebody could advise me I would really appreciate it. Many thanks in advance. Kind regards Ross Ross

Error while trying to register DLLs for Microsoft Jet on Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit

Hello! I'm having issues with importing Excel spreadsheets into Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit server.  After browsing the web, it appears that the problem is with the DLL's used by Microsoft Jet.  I've thus attempted to re-register these DLL's.  However, I am receiving the following results. c:\Windows\SysWOW64> regsvr32 c:\Windows\SysWOW64\msjetoledb40.dllSuccessful c:\Windows\SysWOW64> regsvr32 c:\Windows\SysWOW64\msjet40.dllSuccessful c:\Windows\SysWOW64> regsvr32 c:\Windows\SysWOW64\msjint40.dllThe module "msjint40.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DLLRegisterServer was not found c:\Windows\SysWOW64> regsvr32 c:\Windows\SysWOW64\msjter40.dllThe module "msjter40.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DLLRegisterServer was not found c:\Windows\SysWOW64> regsvr32 c:\Windows\SysWOW64\msjtes40.dllSuccessful c:\Windows\SysWOW64> regsvr32 c:\Windows\SysWOW64\mswstr10.dllThe module "mswstr10.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DLLRegisterServer was not found I've set the application pool for this site to use 32bit.  Please note that due to my role on the team, other options such as using ACE are not available to me, unless I can prove that I've exhausted all other options. Thoughts? Thanks,Mike

SQL Server 2008 R2 deploying any version of sharepoint results in extremly slow DB creation

Hello, When installing any version of Sharepoint(2007,2010) during the "Creating Configuration Database" Step it takes over 10 hours to complete.  Then creating a web app takes just as long. and the sites are extreemply slow.  Environment: 1) DB Server - SQL Server 2008 R2 on Windows Server 2008 R2 2) Webserver - to host Sharepoint 2010 on Windows Server 2008 R2 The Servers are on the same network and running with lots of horsepower, disk and memory.  Are there any know issues with this and should we install Cummulative Update 3? Maybe that has a fix.  We exhausted all our options and need justification to apply the CU3 hotfix(s). Thanks for your help.

Can't enable filestream on SQL Server 2008 Express 64bit under Win 7(64 bit WOW)

I have a newbie question.  I am running Win7(64 bit WOW). I installed SQL Server 2008 Express R2 (64 bit), but when I go to enable filestream, it reports that my edition of SQL Server does not support filestream.  I thought that the 64 bit edition would.  It says to install SQL Server 2008 64 bit.  Am I correct that that is not a free download?  Do I have any other options?

MSSQL 2008 R2 - database in restoring mode after backup - forever..

Hi folks,   i have this problem that occourred today with one instance of MSSQL 2008 R2 running on a WIN x64 R2 enterprise server.   i have run a backup maintainance job and now i have two databases in restoring mode for over 4hrs.   my questions are: why are these databases restoring when i was backing up? and why are they not being logged anywhere - i can not find anything on logs, activty monitor, or even Windows Resource Monitor.   i can not see any work been done by MSSQL to restore these databases, and yet they are set as 'RESTORING'.   any suggestion from the community here will be much appreciated as i am banging my head against the wall already.   thanks,   Nicolas    data warehouse | data migration | ETL/ELT | UK | http://www.brainpowered.net

Upgraded to SQL Server 2008 Express R2 64bit and now all my VS2010 db apps won't run

I am running WIN764bit, VS2010 and just "upgraded" from SQL server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 Express R2 64 bit.  When I went back into VS2010 and tried to run and test several database apps that I have developed, I find that I keep getting the error "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instrance".  I have read a lot of threads here but I am not getting anywhere.  I can create a new SQL Server database, but can't find any of my existing .dbo connections and can't open any of the .mdf's from within Server Explorer (VS2010).  Any ideas? BTW the install went fine. And I have User Instance set to True in VS2010.

SQLSERVER 2008 - FILESTREAM - filename filesystem

hello, i use filestream sqlserver 2008. When a file is inserted on sqlserver filestream, this file is put on a directory and rename with this: "00000055-000000f9-0009" for example. If you add extension (jpg for example), you can open this file. It's good. But, i dont't know how get the name "00000055-000000f9-0009" for example when i have my colum filestream of my table and the uniqueidentifier.

It is important for me because i wan't to access to this file if my application have a problem. I am administrator DBA sqlserver and i wan't to retrieve the correspondance and file GUID of my table and file system "xxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxx-xxxx" created.

sql express 2008 64bit, will this be a problem?

Hi, I'm developing a site on sql express 2008 64bit + VS 2010 Express. Then, I realize that when it is done, the hosting maybe only provide 32bit server.  Will this be a problem? Do I have to do extra steps, for example, convert the 64bit sql DB file to 32bit SQL DB file, then can attach to the server?
