Changing Clustered SQL Server 2005 Default Server Collation

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 22, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

We are attempting to change the default collation of an SQL Server 2005 Clustered environment. We have created an "unattended install" script to perform this, and have modified it several times as errors have arisen repeatedly. The last time, however, we used the following script:

We are running this script from the primary (Active) node of the cluster. We did notice that the bootstrap logs created from this final execution did include logs from both nodes. When I look in the Summary.txt file, it tells me that Setup succeeded with the installation. After the script executed, we rolled the cluster from primary to secondary, and rebooted the primary node. We then rolled the cluster back to the primary, and rebooted the secondary node. Once that was complete, we cycled the SQL Server service from the SQL Configuration Manager. After all those steps, we opened SSMS client to look at the properties of master, and the collation was still CI_AI.

Instance and Default connection properties on SQL Server 2005

We had a sql server fail and I have been having troubles.  I compared the connection properties on the server properties and noticed that multiple default settings are no longer set.  So I'm wondering if during the failure these could have some gotten flipped.  DB's that worked all of a sudden don't work and we had to migrate to a different instance.  I have never changed any of the setings below and wonder what impact they would have if I changed them back to the default of an installed instance? ansi warning is checked ansi padding is checked ANSI NULLS is checked arithmetic abort is checked quoted identified is checked No Count is checked concat null yields null is checked Could anyone tell me how clearing these checked options will impact my db?   -- Paul Bergson MVP - Directory Services MCITP: Enterprise Administrator MCTS, MCT, MCSE, MCSA, Security+, BS CSci 2008, Vista, 2003, 2000 (Early Achiever), NT4 http://www.pbbergs.com    Twitter @pbbergs Please no e-mails, any questions should be posted in the NewsGroup This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

SQL 2005 Server export to Foxpro fails by "default codepage missing"

Hi, I just tried to apply the foxpro driver VFPOLEDBSetup.msi to import and export an old format dbf. First of all no other method is available in this case, as one of the dbf-tables holds about 9 million rows. I don't want to (manually) go to excel and wait for 10 years importing it there, then only to discover i need another 10 years to get it into sql server.   Here's my task at hand: Source: street/housenumber database with approx 9 million rows Task:  Convert it to SQL server database (import DTS)           Change some data Export it back to DBF format. I don't have any problems acting on the first two steps (dts import to SQL 2k5 and changing data) I doooo have some problems with the last part. As soon as i define the DTS through the wizzard, it leaves the "CodePage" blank. However, upon executing it i receive some warnings and finally errors: On the "Setting Destination Connection" action in the final execution progress window: - Setting Destination Connection (Warning) Messages Warning 0x80202066: Destination - housenum [40]: Cannot retrieve the column code page info from the OLE DB provider. If the component supports the "DefaultCodePage" property, the code page from that property will be used. Change the value of the property if the current string code page values are incorrect. If the component does not support the property, the co

MS SQL Server 2005 Standard or Enterprise with default encryption

Hi, I wish to know whether or not by default MS SQL Server 2005 Std or Ent edition will encrypt the communication over the network by default? As, when we test out the database activity monitoring solution to capture the SQL traffics from the network, we are unable to see the DB user name and Source Program but SQL statements is able to seen. According to the vendor, it is due to the nature of MS SQL Server 2005 that encrypt the communication by default. But, why is it only encrypted the DB user name and Source Program but not the SQL statement? Can someone provide me the answer? Is that true what the vendor claims?   regards, Teh

Default values for filters not populating in report builder (SQL server 2005)

I  am frustrated with this challenge for  populating default values for filters in report builder. Here are the steps that I am performing.

I have clicked on the filter icon, then dragged the dimension to the filter pane, switched the properties to Prompt and changed the operator to 'in this list'.

by default the value selected is 'no value selected', Microsoft online tutorials says that this should automatically populate the filter criteria with the default list of values for the underlying dimension. However it dosen't

How do I populate this filter with default list of values.

Issue with SAN Drive Migration in master database in clustered SQL Server 2005 SP1

In our SQL Server 2005 SP1 cluster, I have to retire the existing SAN and move all my databases to new SAN drive. I have successfully moved all datafiles (user, system databases, resource) except master database.

Even when I change the parameters in start-up from configuration manager, I am getting error when starting up from cluster administrator / configuration manager.

But I am able to start the SQL Server successfully from command line (without any flags).

When I start the SQL Server from cluster administrator / configuration manager (after changing the parameters), I see that the start-up parameters are changing back to originalpath (old SAN) .

Please let me know incase you need any more information.

On SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS SQL Server 2008 Default Collation

Collation is one of the most confusing features of SQL Server. BOL 2008 states that backward compatibility is the only reason to go with SQL collation. I thought previously it is just smart to stay with the default Microsoft offers unless there is a real good reason to choose a different collation.

So is the default SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS  (Case Insensitive, Accent Sensitive) a good choice? (Assume the installation is brand new SQL Server 2008)

Related links:

SQL Server offers the SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS collation as the default collation for server installations.

For backward compatibility, the default English-language (US) collation is SQL_Latin1_General*.

Changing the SQL Port of a Clustered SQL Server 2008 in Win Server 2008R2

The above setup is in vmware. The 2-node cluster works fine. Able to failover to and fro.  Just that when I tried to change the port 1433 to 12345, the cluster is not able to online the SQL Service. Below is the application error log:

[sqsrvres] checkODBCConnectError: sqlstate = 08001; native error = 274d; message = [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. For more information see SQL Server Books Online.

The service status becomes Pending Online and after a while, it becomes offline. Using the SQL Configuration Manager, I revert to 1433 and it works fine again. May I know what am I missing ?

SQL Server 2005 Try and Catch Exception Handling

I'm pretty excited to see that there is some real error handling for T-SQL code in SQL Server 2005. It's pretty painful to have your wonderfully architected .NET solution tainted by less-than-VBScript error handling for stored procedures in the database. The big difference being the addition of TRY..CATCH blocks. Let's take a look:
