Formulas used for Calculated Series

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 22, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server
I'm trying to find documentation on what the formulas are that are used for the various selections for SSRS 2008 Calcuted Series.  In particular, the Performance formula appears to be based on the slope of the underlying data points.  But, what is the true calculation used?  I can not find this information anywhere (in MSDN and in searches).

How to do a calculated series in 2008 R2?

An RDL from pre-R2 shows a calculated series section in the chart data context menu, however I can see no way to add a new one.  How?

Calculated Series Period

If there is less data than the period value for the calculated series then the entire chart does not render and I get the ugly message 'Formula error - There are not enough data points for the Period'.  Reducing the period to an artificially low value to prevent the error is pointless really.   The period value cannot be formula driven so what options are available for at least displaying the normal values, or perhaps paramaterising the period value?

Chart display issue with Moving Average Calculated Series

I have successfully produced a line graph containing 2 data series; a count of events by month and a moving average (5 month period) of said events.

My problem is trying to limit the chart to show ONLY a certain period of time.  In order to generate the Moving Average (calculated series) I had to make the query go further back in time to count the previous months' events.

For Example:  Chart should display Jan2010 through Oct2010, EventsPerMonth (series1), MovingAVG (series2).

At first it displayed back to the begining of the data which was Sept2009 - Oct2010.  I figured out how to cut it off at Jan2010 using the Horizontal Axis Properties > Scalar features.

Final issue: I need to get the first data point (Jan2010) off of the Y-axis as a starting point.  Basically I need to shift it one interval to right, leaving a space, so that there is no line connected between the data line and the Y-axis.

This is difficult to discribe, I apologize if this isn't super clear.

Thank you!

ASP.NET, HTML, JavaScript Snippet Support (VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 Series)

This post covers another useful improvement in VS 2010 - HTML/ASP.NET/JavaScript snippet support. Snippets allow you to be more productive within source view by allowing you to create chunks of code and markup that you can quickly apply and use in your application with a minimum of character typing.

Visual Studio has supported the concept of "snippets" for VB and C# in previous releases - but not for HTML, ASP.NET markup and JavaScript. With VS 2010 we now support snippets for these content types as well.

Clean Web.Config Files (VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 Series)

.NET 4 includes a new version of the CLR, and a new .NET 4 specific machine.config file (which is installed side-by-side with the one used by .NET 2, .NET 3 and .NET 3.5).

The new .NET 4 machine.config file now automatically registers all of the ASP.NET tag sections, handlers and modules that we've added over the years, including the functionality for:

.ASP.NET Dynamic Data
.ASP.NET Routing (which can now be used for both ASP.NET WebForms and ASP.NET MVC)
.ASP.NET Chart Control (which now ships built-into ASP.NET V4)
What this means is that when you create a new "Empty ASP.NET application" project in VS 2010, you'll find that the new default application-level web.config file is now clean and simple:

Code Optimized Web Development Profile (VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 Series)

When you first run VS 2010 it prompts you to select an IDE profile to use. The profile you select will configure how tool windows are displayed/docked in the IDE by default and set the default keyboard shortcuts. You can then customize any of these settings by using the Tools->Options menu within the IDE and then override/change them. You can also later reset your profile and pick a different one by choosing the Tools->Import and Export Settings menu command.

VS 2010 and .NET 4 Series

VS 2010 and .NET 4 are the next major releases of our developer tools and framework. Together they contain a ton of new functionality and improvements that I think you'll really like, and which make building applications of all types easier, faster and better. The improvements range from nice small tweaks to major, major enhancements - and can be found across the .NET Framework, the languages, and the IDE.

GridView Sorting/Paging : 'REAL' AJAX with Asp.Net Series

This is a continuation of my 'REAL' AJAX with Asp.Net (not Asp.Net AJAX) series posts for those of us trying to stop relying on Asp.Net 'AJAX'.

Ok, nothing too dramatic to start things off, we are going to make some tabled data sortable and pagable all without using a bit of postback. Not only that, but it is going to be incredibly easy!

Free Series of SharePoint Workflow How-to Videos

This is the series of "How to" Document Workflow with SharePoint using Visual Studio 2008 (using the .NET Framework 3.0 for backward compatibility to Visual Studio 2005). I have created video's that show the most common requests that I have seen around MOSS/SharePoint 2007 workflow & document workflow.

Get A Raise: Discover a Series of Fortunate Event Handlers in Visual Basic

You may use them every day, but how much do you really know about events? What's going on when you add an event handler to a class? In this article, Ken Getz demonstrates various ways to interact with events and event handlers, and shows how they can solve common problems. Along with the article, you can download two sample applications (one for Visual Basic .NET 2002 and 2003 and one for Visual Basic 2005) and follow along.

Resource File: Windows Media 9 Series Digital Rights Management

If you have an application that handles Windows Media content and you need an effective way to track content usage, Windows Media 9 Series now offers Digital Rights Management (DRM). It allows you to take advantage of the peer-to-peer distribution model and still redirect users back to your app once they have downloaded your content (prior to viewing).

Calculated Columns in a Form Library receive error: Value does not fall within the expected range.

I have a forms library that posts the date the form was created. We would like to create a calculated column that allows us to look at these forms based on the month and year they were created. I had created a calculated column that extracts the month and replaces the number with a text string by using an if statement; "IF(MONTH([Proposal Date])=1,"January","") It goes on to evaluate each month and replace the number with the text string. This formula worked for quite some time, though now when I try to add any calculated columns or edit any existing calculated columns on this form library I receive the following error: Value does not fall within the expected range. Now my existing calculated columns (like the one above) do not work and I can not create new calcualted columns. Any insight would be awesome as this has been plaguing me for a couple of months now.

Trying to set Calendar Time Interval Using Calculated Column, but getting Error

So i was trying to use a calculated column that added 7 days to the start date of a calendar item. The calculated column worked fine because i checked with several tests. Then i tried using the Column as the End Time in the Time Interval Setting in the Calendar View. This broke Sharepoint. Not the normal graceful error im using to seeing from Sharepoint but the Server Error Page when a dump happens in a ASP page. I havent enabled the full error page because i assume its not like i can fix it, i dont have the source code.

Does anyone else experience this? If so is it a known problem and being worked on?

Series of Radio Buttons in MVC

Hi.  I'm fairly new to MVC and admittedly don't fully understand how data is passed between Views and Controllers.  That said, here is my issue.

I am working with C#.  I have a page which has a list of items.  Each item has a radio button set of three associated with it and there are 15 of these sets on the page.  Thus I have radio1, radio2....radio15, etc.  Each of these has value 0, 1, or 2 upon submit.  I can't seem to understand how to get the information out of these radio button sets from the controller without passing 15 different variables to the post method in the controller which is associated with the view; ie passing Int32 radio1, Int32 radio2,.., Int32 radio15, etc.

I tried using ViewData["radio"+i] in a loop to access the value of each radio button set, but this, apparently can only be used to pass data to the View from the Controller and not the other way around.

Any advice is appreciated.

Calculated Date Fields

I'm trying to calculate whether a delivery is on time or late and by how many days. Is there a way to format the column so it show's the result in the number format as opposed to showing up as a date? Negative numbers don't export into excel well.
