Chapter 6: Advanced Custom Web Parts (Professional Microsoft SharePoint 2007 Development Using Silve

This chapter builds on the Web Parts created in the previous chapter, adding more advanced features.

Overriding web.config in sharepoint webpart/using custom membership in web part

I'm developing a web part for MOSS 2007. The web part is being deployed to a web application which utilizes forms-based authentication, and role/membership providers to control users. The membership table has been edited to include addition user info (I am aware, that this isn't the best way to handle additional user, i.e. profiles etc., however, this is a requirement from another department). Since my web part needs to access this information, I was thinking of implementing a custom membership provider. So far I've followed: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/6tc47t75.aspx and I've got my custom membership class, and a very stripped down membershipprovider-class. But how do I enable/use this membership provider in my web part? I've tried creating a simple web.config in the "WebPartCode" folder of my solution, next to my webpart code file, with connection string and membership provider tags. But I don't even really know how to build/reference/use the membership provider itself, so I don't know what else I need to do. I've built a C# class library project with the two classes (membershipprovider and custom membershipuser) and compiled it and installed it in the global assembly cache - is this correct? and how do I access them from here? Hope someone can help

Cannot enable Ribbon Edit Tab buttons and "connect" them to a list item in my custom webpart

I have one list with some custom fields and I want to develop a custom page. So, I created an ASPX page and added my custom webpart. This webpart has just a RichTextField, in edit mode, "linked" to one item of the list, like below: SPSite _SPSite = SPContext.Current.Site; SPWeb _SPWebProjects = _SPSite.OpenWeb("/Projects"); SPList _SPListProject = _SPWebProjects.GetList("/Projects/Lists/Project"); int _ID = Convert.ToInt32(this.Page.Request.QueryString["ID"]); RichTextField _RTF = new RichTextField(); _RTF.ID = "RTF"; _RTF.ControlMode = SPControlMode.Edit; _RTF.FieldName = "History"; _RTF.ItemContext = SPContext.GetContext(HttpContext.Current, _ID, _SPListProject.ID, _SPListProject.ParentWeb); _RTF.RenderContext = SPContext.GetContext(HttpContext.Current, _ID, _SPListProject.ID, _SPListProject.ParentWeb); this.Controls.Add(_RTF);   Then, I "turned on" the edit tab on the ribbon by doing the follow: protected override void OnPreRender(EventArgs e) { SPRibbon _CurrentRibbon = SPRibbon.GetCurrent(this.Page); _CurrentRibbon.TrimById("Ribbon.WebPartPage"); _CurrentRibbon.MakeTabAvailable("Ribbon.ListForm.Edit", string.Empty); _CurrentRibbon.MakeContextualGroupInitiallyVisible("Ribbon.ListForm.Edit", string.Empty); _CurrentRibbon.Minimized = false; _CurrentRi

Creating Custom ASP.NET Control for use on a SharePoint 2010 OOTB WebPart

I am currently trying to develop a custom asp.net control that can be deployed to SharePoint 2010 and then included on something like a New item form. I have been able to build the control as part of a webpart but it needs to be done as a stand alone control that can be used on various webparts including the out of the box webparts like the WebPartPages:DataFormWebPart. Are there any good examples of building a custom control, deploying it to SharePoint and then using SharePoint designer to add that control to an existing web part?

Problem with Content Query Webpart and Custom Userfields

Dear Community, I am using Sharepoint 2007's content query webpart to access content types from 2 lists each contained in a different sitecollection. To achieve this, I used this tutorial: http://www.heathersolomon.com/blog/articles/CustomItemStyle.aspx. The tutorial worked great. By using the property CommonViewFields and modifing the XML Stylesheets accordingly, i could access almost every field. Even User Fieldtypes like editor and author were accessible by adding (editor,User) or (author,User) to the CommonViewFields property. But when I tried to access the custom made userfield "Username" in the same way (adding Username,User to the property), the webpart threw an error and couldn't be displayed anymore. When I changed it to Username,Text , no error occured but it naturally didn't show up, since it is the wrong fieldtype. I hope some of you can help me, since all my researches on this topic only brought up some more people with the same problem, but no solution to it. Thanks in advance, SoundofSilence

Multilingual Interface (Hindi) custom, webpart issue disappearance in share point 2007

Hi This is regarding the disappearance of custom  web parts in the multilingual site developed using MOSS 2007. The multilingual feature has been implemented using variations. All the custom web parts disappear when viewed after some time.  When the custom web parts are deployed to the site, it appears and they disappear when viewed after some time.  I have done local deployment as well as GAC deployment of the web parts dll. Both have the same effect. I have added the respective resource files for the web parts in the user control folder.    Thanks In Advance uttam

SSRSReport's cell while in custom webpart behaving mischieve

Hi   We have ended up with a new problem for which I not able to find answers through googling.   We are using Sharepoint 2007 and SSRS 2008.     We develop reports using SSRS 2008 and then deploy reports into Reporting services manager which is configured in native mode.   Now we have a dashboard designed in sharepoint which contain n number of webzones. We have also created a   custom webpart to display reports. So in each of the webzones we will add our custom webpart. This custom   webpart has got property where I can mention report service manager path and report path. So that these   reports are shown through this custom webparts.   The reason why we did not use built in report viewer was when clicked on some reports we wanted to be navigated to different pages with paramater provided on URL and loading dasboard page will have some reports in different webparts each of reports in webpart will read the parameter from URL which I dont how to do from built in reportviewer.   Now what is happening when I add few reports to custom webparts. Some of the cells of some reports does not show border colors. some cells in some reports are having text misaligned, text is having different font than what we actually set for that.   When we opened the view source, we found that two different reports which are displayed in
