Migrating ASPNET Role/Membership Database to New Server

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

I have an existing ASPNET role/membership database created on SQLExpress 2005 (WIndows 2003 Server). I created it under the .NET 3 framework many years ago using the aspnet_regsql.exe application in full GUI mode.

I am setting up a new Windows 2008R2 server with .Net Framework 4 and SQL Server 2008R2. I don't want users to have to recreate accounts or create roles, etc.

1. Should I backup the current database and import it into the new system, and if so do I even need to use the aspnet_regsql.exe application. (If so which version do I use, different aspnet_regsql.exe files exist in different directories (i.e., FrameWork, FrameWork64)

2. Should I just run aspnet_regsql.exe on its own and then somehow try to import the current data into those tables.

I am concerned that if I just import somehow the roles within SQL server will not be created properly.

thanks in advance,

Migrating aspnet tables to dev server - having issues

We're trying to migrate a one of our apps to our dev server for testing and development, but we're having problems with the membership functionality. We can add users, but there seems to be a disconnect with roles. We can query the aspnet_users table and find the new user in there, but when we query the aspnet_usersinroles table, that user id is not present.

We're also unable to run the Roles.GetUsersInRole("somerole") method. It returns 0 records. When I run Roles.ApplicationName, it returns the correct name, so .NET should be passing the correct app name.

We're just a little baffled. If anyone could shed some light on what could be the issue, we would appreciate it.

Thanks! :)

user mapping to a database and role membership to that database

When assigning a 'user mapped Login' to a database and role membership to that database, is it redundent to check/enable db_datareader, db_datawriter as well as db_owner or will check/enable db_owner become all that is necessary to provide role membership to the database?

Migrating MOSS 2007 installation from one database server to another - configuration database issue

The database server which our sharepoint installation is currently using is going to be shutdown and a new one is going to be put in production.

I read in some post that the configuration database cannot be moved (while the same operation type is documented for content database). Is this correct?

Isn't there a way by which I can modify my current moss installation to define the use of another sql server for configuration (and then later for content) databases?

Any other workaround or procedure?

Thank you!

Restored database with ASPNET Role data and no one can login now

I have an application that uses the ASPNET role provider.  My SQL Server crashed so I took a backup of the database and restored it to a new SQL Server and changed the db connection string to that server.  The web site runs but no users can login to the site.  Is there something that I should have done when the db was on the other server?

Pointing my programs to the aspnet membership files in my SQL database

I used aspnet_regsql to add the aspnet membership files to my database, but my program is not finding them there. It is updating some other set somewhere elelse. When I click the hammer icon, I can see the members and roles, my program finds them as well, but they are not in my database. I need to get it attached to my SQL database so I can deploy to hosted site.

Migrating from Windows Internal Database to SQL Server Express 2008 r2

What's the best way to migrate my existing Windows Internal Database to SQL Server Express 2008 r2? I see tutorials for 2005 are the steps any different?

Database Role membership for MSDB database alone

I do like to find the query to list out all the available database role membership identities for msdb database. For other database i pull out the list of database role membership from sys.database_principals whose principal_id ranges between 16384-16393. For msdb database there seems to be much of database roles and it is not available in sys.database_principals. Kindly help me out in pulling out all the database roles for msdb database alone.

MS SQL Server: Disconnect Users From Database - Kill User Session

Publishing SQL Server Database using Publishing Wizard : Tips & Tricks

We can use SQL Server Publishing Wizard to deploy our local Database to remote hosting server/production server. This feature is available in SQL Server 2008/VWD 2008.

Below is the complete step by step guide of this process.

SQL Server Database Transaction

A transaction is a group of SQL commands executed together as a single component of work to be accomplished. If all of these commands succeed, then a transaction is committed - the changes to the data are made final. If any of the commands within a transaction fail, then the entire transaction is cancelled, or in SQL Server terms, the transaction will be rolled back.

Transactions are one of the things that keep your data safe, but they're not necessarily easy to understand. Here's some help:

No ASPNET User in Windows Server 2008?

I have been looking everywhere online regarding this, but have not found a clear answer.

I have an ASP.Net app running on Windows Server 2008, it's basically a reporting app using Crystal Reports. I have encountered a roadblock in regards to rendering some pages. When I run the app in Visual Studio(on the same 2008 machine) everything works perfectly. Yet when I publish it and run it live the reports will not display correctly, I get a message saying Failed to render page.

I looked this error up in the Crystal Reports website and the fixes they have there refer to giving the windows "aspnet" user full access rights to certain folders on the machine. I would be happy to do this, however there is no aspnet user in Windows Server 2008.

I installed the server and set its role to be Web Server. I also checked all the options regarding ASP.Net and IIS 6 compatibility. Yet there is no ASPNET username anywhere.

Did I set the server up wrong? or do I have to do something within ASP.Net to  create this user and then give it rights?

Metadata: Create a Database Schema Repository with Meta Data Services in SQL Server 2000

SQL Server 2000 Meta Data Services is a repository technology that stores and manages metadata for SQL Server. Instead of building database schemas over and over, Meta Data Services allows you to freeze an entire schema for use in other projects. You can also use these schemas for training, testing, or debugging. In this article, the authors will review the various components of Meta Data Services and show how it can be programmed using a Visual Basic client, XML, and XSLT. They will also show you how to manage and manipulate your metadata by generating a simple database schema using a SQL Server repository.
