VS 2010 unable to edit or display xaml files.

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :WPF

I am having a problem using the editor for xaml files in Visual Studio 2010.

I have used Visual Studio 2005 and 2008 for many years.  Over the last year or more I have been constructing and maintaining a Silverlight application, editing both the xaml code and using the design mode.  I am quite familiar with it and it worked fine.

However we recently installed several copies of Visual Studio 2010 as trial versions and since it seemed OK we converted to the full version.  However now I am having trouble viewing xaml files in the editor, in either the design mode or as text.

Double clicking on a xaml file in the Solution Explorer, which should start the xaml editor, now does very little, leaving the main screen blank. The file seems to be open since it is listed in the list of open files in the 'Windows' drop down menu.  If I ask it to reload the file it says it is already open and do I want to close it before continuing.  But it is not accessible or visible.

Right clicking on a xaml file and selecting 'Open with..' shows the 'Automatic Editor Selector' is selected as default.  If I select 'Text Editor' I can at least see and edit the xaml code.  But I can not see the design mode.  If I select 'Windows Presentation Foundation Designer with encoding' from the 'Op

SharePoint / Project Server 2010 Unable to edit a HTTPS site in SharePoint designer 32 bit

I posted this thread below under a different forum and was requested to move.  Below is our current problem and the feedback that was given.

We currently have a project server 2010 site with several workspaces associated with it.  When trying to edit the site (either from choosing edit is designer from the site actions or from trying to open from within the designer) a dialog appears asking to choose a certificate for the site.domain.com.

The certificate issued by the site is a GeoTrust certificate and checks ok when browsing the site in IE.  This Windows security dialog also appears when trying to export to excel on the same site.

Any thoughts to what we are missing?

Visual Studio 2010 crashes when opening XAML files

I'm having a problem opening XAML files in Visual Studio 2010.  When I open a XAML file, Visual Studio become very slow and the XAML file never produces an outline or a rendered version of the XAML.  When I click in the text of the XAML, it can take several minutes for the cursor to appear where I clicked.  The XAML file is rather small - just a grid with some basic controls on it (a grid, stack panel, radio buttons, date pickers, etc).  The problem occurs if I open any XAML file in the project, though.

When I watch devenv.exe in the task manager, as soon as I open a XAML file, the process is consuming 100% of one of the CPUs and begins eating chunks of memory at the rate of about 5MB/second and creating a new thread about every two seconds.    The memory use grows until it's about 700MB and the number of threads climbs to between 450-470 before it levels off.  Even after it stops producing new threads and consuming more memory, the XAML file is still unresponsive and it's still using 100% of one of the CPUs.  Even after a half hour, the CPU is still at 100% with 452 threads.

I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled Visual Studio but I'm still having the same problem.

I'm running XP sp3 32-bit with VS 2010 Ultimate on a dual core machine with 4GB RAM.  At this point I simply can't edit XAML

Clean Web.Config Files (VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 Series)

.NET 4 includes a new version of the CLR, and a new .NET 4 specific machine.config file (which is installed side-by-side with the one used by .NET 2, .NET 3 and .NET 3.5).

The new .NET 4 machine.config file now automatically registers all of the ASP.NET tag sections, handlers and modules that we've added over the years, including the functionality for:

.ASP.NET Dynamic Data
.ASP.NET Routing (which can now be used for both ASP.NET WebForms and ASP.NET MVC)
.ASP.NET Chart Control (which now ships built-into ASP.NET V4)
What this means is that when you create a new "Empty ASP.NET application" project in VS 2010, you'll find that the new default application-level web.config file is now clean and simple:

Add edit drop down menu so I can edit pdf files in SharePoint

I have a pdf file that I'd like to open and edit.  The pdf file just opens, and doesn't ask if it should be opened as a read only or edit option.  My colleague is able to select edit mode as a drill down, but I can't figure out how to add this functionality into my document library... does anyone have a solution?

Unable to Edit the properties of a document using the ribbon

I have created a new web part page and added a document library to that page.  In the ribbon the "Edit Properties" icon is enabled and I can edit the document properties.

When I add another web part to the page and go back to select a document, on the ribbon the "Edit Properties" icon is no disabled.  I can still edit the document using the context menu of the document.

Permissions on the library did not change when I added the additional web part.  The only change to the page was adding an additional web part.

Visual Studio 2010 Creates Two Solution Files

When I create a new file system based web application in Visual Studio 2010, for example, named as "MyWebSite", two folders were created by the studio: MyWebSite and MyWebSite(2). The second folder only contains a solution file while the first folder has the solution file as well. Is this a new feature? Where is the setting that can avoid the second folder? Thanks,

How to use display Text in Hyperlink For SharePoint 2010 Designer Workflow

In SharePoint 2007 Designer, I have used the Hyperlink column to store the link "http://www.sharepoint.com/Default.aspx, Details". The details text will be shown in the Hyperlink column. Everything works fine in sharepoint 2007 Designer workflow.

In SharePoint Designer 2010 Workflow, I used the same method but the hyperlink column is displaying the full text "http://www.sharepoint.com/Default.aspx, Details" instead of only Details

wss2.0 edit drop-down menu does not display

Hi all

I have a user who is unable to view the edit drop-down menu next to documents in a document library.

The user was able to view the drop-down before, but it seems since upgrading to either Office 2007 or IE7 that the problem is occuring. The user is an administrator on the site so it doesn't seem to be permissions issue.

I have had the user run an Office Diagnostics but this did not resolve the problem.

Any ideas please?

Data form web part not displaying - Unable to display this Web Part. ....

I am designing a data form - adding some formatting etc.  I am able to see the webpart correctly in SPD split view, but when I trying to preview it, it gives me the following error

Unable to display this Web Part. To troubleshoot the problem, open this Web page in a Windows SharePoint Services-compatible HTML editor such as Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer. If the problem persists, contact your Web server administrator.
ANy help would be welcome, I have spent a lot of time on this page and don't want to do it again.  THere are a lot of fields and it's a tedious process to move them to the correct location.  I am at my wits end, I am not sure how to debug this!!

PowerShell script to add/edit ContentEditor webpart on SharePoint 2010

Hi all, I'm new to PowerShell scripting with SharePoint. Following are the requirements that were given to me. Can any one direct me in the right direction interms of writing the script and how to save and execute the script? I am aware of Cmdlets. 1. Cycle through all sites in site collection 2. For each site, retrieve all document libraries 3. Look for specific CMV document library name (ie value communication, key business drivers, etc)          o add content editor web part if doesn't exist          o add/update appropriate description based on the document library name Thanks in advance...
