Cannot open .XLSX file in Excel 2010 from WSS 3.0 site

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

Hi

I'm having trouble in opening .xlsx files created using excel 2007. File is on the sharepoint site (WSS 3.0). Since I have installled Office 2010 I am not being able to open this file directly from the browser. However, if I download it on my local PC its seems to open fine.

Excel 2010 shows error "Excel cannot open file "filename" because the file extension or file format is not correct. Verify the file is not corrupted..."

Please can someone suggest what I am missing on my sharepoint site?

Cannot open file with Excel Services 2010

When opening any of the Excel files in document library (new or old)  in the browser, following error is displayed:

The file that you selected could not be found. Check the spelling of the file name and verify that the location is correct.
Make sure that the file has not been renamed, moved, or deleted.

In the ULS log I think this is the relevant error:

GetSPFile: Sharepoint threw a handled exception - turning it into a FileOpen exception. Exception is: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: cannot construct SPUserToken associated with contextLocationUri location ---> System.ArgumentException: Value does not fall within the expected range.

Versions:

SharePoint2010 64 bit
Sql Server2008 64 bit enterprise
Office 2010 RTM

All clients and server are running Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit.

Troubleshooting:

- opening the file with Excel works fine
- tested from all machines within domain
- below is a relevant part of the ULS logging of Excel services
- looked in the event log of SharePoint machine

if ssis package writes to excel file that might be open by a user

I have written a package that writes to an excel file to a network folder. Eventually this package will run as a job. What is the best way to handle the situation where someone opens the file or inadvertantly leaving it open while the package is running and and stop the package.? No one needs to modify or write anything to this file after it is finished

SharePoint 2010 Export list Items to Excel, wrong url in iqy file

Hi, I have a SharePoint 2010 Environment that uses https://portal.<something>.com. Exporting to Excel of a list uses wrong URL. When I go to the a list, select the list to show the "office ribbon" and then select export to excel, excel will show the error "Excel cannot connect to the SharePoint List". When I take a look at the IQY file that is created it contains the wrong url: http://portal.<something>.com instead of https://portal.<something>.com Changing the URL in the IQY file manualy to https://portal.<something>.com and then opening it will excel is working fine, list data is exported to excel then. Alternate access mapping is configured to use https://portal.<something>.com as default, export to access is working normaly. I already deleted the http://portal.<something>.com alternate access mapping once to see if this fixes the problem. No fix, even not after IISreset or rebooting the server. Where or how is the export to Excel IQY file created and where is it possible to fix the URL it is putting in the IQY file? Grtz, Arjan

can't open sharepoint site with sharepoint designer 2010

Hi there, We've installed SP Foundation + SP Server 2010 and set up some sites. when we tried to open it with SP Designer 2010, it fails and gave us some errors. opening SPD through site actions : unable to open website. possible causes: 1. the web server may not have sharepoint server installed 2. the web server may be temporarily out of service 3. if you are connecting through a proxy server, the proxy settings may be incorrect 4. an error may have occured in the web server opening sharepoint site through SPD: the folder 'http://mysp.domain.com/site/default.aspx' isn't accessible. the folder may be located in an unavailable location, protected with a password, or the filename contains a / or \. the thing is ... we have no problem with sharepoint designer 2007. any idea?

After Installing SharePoint Foundation 2010, trying to open site gives 404 error in browser

I had this as reply on a thread about migrating from WSS 3.0 to SFS 2010. But I have completed all the steps with the modified documentation, but the browser delivers an error 404 when I try to open the site I created.  Same thing happens if I go at it via https, but first I get a certificate warning error (using the IP instead of the FQDN) and then being prompted for credentials.

I am completely stumped at what else to look at.  Any help in gathering information to get help is also appreciated.

Environment:  SBS 2008, SFS 2010, SQL Express 2008.  Rest of the IIS sites continue to function normally and I can get to the management site ok.  Although after the install, I had to go into application pool and change the service account from the domain admin (it defaulted to that) to networkservice account, otherwise I got a 503.  Same thing happened on the site I created until I changed the service account.  Now just a 404.

Visual Studio 2010 will not open my MOSS 2007 Site

I am using VS 2010 premium, Win Server 2008 R2, MOSS 2007 and are all installed on the same machine.

First, I when I try to connect with the server explorer...I get A SharePoint server is not installed on this computer which is not true.

Second, When I try to open a website through > open website > local IIS and click on my sharepoint portal site I get.....Unable to open website, Visual Web Dveloper does not support opening sharepoint sites. Why am I getting this? I am not using Visual web Devloper. I am using VS 2010 premium.

Why is it so hard to open adn/or connect to our sharepoint sites with VS 2010? I have no problem at all using Sharepoint designer to connect but I want to use visual stuidio.  I hate the designer. I think microsoft dropped the ball on this one.    Anybody know of a good article/tutorial on this?

Unable to open an Excel File in Sharepoint MOSS 2007

I am unable to open an excel file in Sharepoint (MOSS 2007). All other documents work fine. As far as I know there was no change on the Server at all.

Excel found unreadable content in 'stuff.xls'. Do you want to recover the contents of this workgroup? If you trust the source of this workbook , click Yes

When I click YES >> It says "Excel recovered your formulas and cell values, but some data may have been lost." And then a link to an xml file , which reads :

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?>
- <recoveryLog xmlns="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/spreadsheetml/2006/main">
  <logFileName>error075400_03.xml</logFileName>
  <summary>Errors were detected in file 'http://server_name/Project_name/Shared Documents/abc - def/Phase 5/Track/stuff.xls'</summary>
- <additionalInfo>
<info>Excel recovered your formulas and cell values, but some data may have been lost.</info>
  </additionalInfo>
  </recoveryLog>

Now this has resulted in huge loss of data and I can see New numbers in the cells which is very strange!

Is there a way I can get it back ? I do not have a

VWD 2010: Copy Web Fails if File Exists on Remote Site

Hi,

I just started using VWD 2010 and I used Copy Web to upload the site to the server. However, whenever I try to upload a new version of a file that I've already uploaded, the upload fails, with this error in the log (as an example):

When dynamically creating an excel file, can SSIS create xlsx files successfully? I can only get SSI

Problem: An Excel file (XLSX) dynamically created by a SQL Task cannot be opened via Excel. The task succeeds, but when you try to open the workbook in Excel you get the fillowing error message: Excel cannot open the file 'myfile.xlsx" because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.

Observations:
1. If the Excel file (xlsx) is created manually in Excel, then the SQL Task has no problem creating table (new worksheets) in the xlsx (so the "CREATE TABLE" statement works fine)
2. If I adjust the connection and task to work with Excel 97-2003 (xls) format then the approach works perfectly
3. The execution results show success of the SQL Task, but there are two warning messages. These same warnings appear when the SQL Task creates a new table (worksheet) successfully in a workbook (xlsx) which was created manually in Excel (and is not corrupt). Messages as follows:
Warning: Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done.
Warning: Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done.

SSIS Details:
