SQL Server 2008 R2 Installation and Service Pack 1 Question

I am migrating a SQL 2000 server to a SQL 2008 R2 server (on different physical servers) . When I ordered SQL Server 2008 the volume licensing allowed me to download sql server web 2008, sql server web 2008 R2 and sql server 2008 service pack 1. I don't know why I have three options to download. Don't I just need to just install the sql server 2008 Web R2? Are there any sql 2008 R2 service packs available?

SSRS 2008 question? Date Help

Hi Experts, I'm new to SSRS world. I'm trying to print current date in the format of "Month-Name Date, Year", here is the t-sql query:- SELECT DATENAME(MONTH, GETDATE()) + ' ' + CAST(DAY(GETDATE()) AS VARCHAR(2)) + ', ' + CAST(DATEPART(YEAR, GETDATE()) AS VARCHAR(4)) AS [Month DD] --'September 14, 2010' Everything is working perfectly untill here, now I placed text-box with exp as :- =DATENAME(MONTH, NOW()) + " " + CAST(DAY(NOW()) AS VARCHAR(2)) + ", " + CAST(DATEPART(YEAR, NOW()) AS VARCHAR(4)) AS [Month DD YYYY] But it is giving error as :- The Value expression for the text run "Textbox22.Paragraph[0].TextRuns[0]' contains an error: Name 'DATENAME' is not declared. I understood the error, saying DATENAME is not the appropriate function in SSRS, so my question is can somebody write me correct code to give me o/p in the form of my above t-sql query   Any Help? I'm using SSRS 2008 Thanks Regards, Kumar

Simple but unusual SQL 2008 peer2peer replication concept and question

Hi, I am not an SQL expert, but have to set up 3 remote SQL databases that need to be synchronised with each other. This is unusual because the locations are tiny atolls in the middle of the Pacific.  Communication between them is by satellite only which has limited bandwidth and is expensive.  The total population (thats all the people) on each atoll is only 500.  There is likely to be a maximum of 40 potential users per atoll and each SQL database is for internet login authentication only (Radius).  So the databases are tiny and have a very low update rate. What is the simplest way to synchronise the databases?  Doing this just once each night at around 4:00am would be best.  Peer to peer replication sounded right, but I do not want our extremely limited bandwidth taken up by this traffic when all we need is for the databases to be synchronised by the next day.  Also we are running MS SQL 2008 R2 Workshop edition and I am reading that this does not support peer2peer replication. The hardware is a laptop - since hot moisture laden salty air is very corrosive for traditional servers and power is intermittant at best.  Each atoll gets an identical system. Can anyone suggest a solution or ideas?  I am happy yo answer questions.  Thank you.

[amateur question] Why can't I use MSCS cluster ip address for SQL 2008 failover cluster?

Good day! Recently, I was tasked to set up SQL 2008 failover cluster on both Windows 2003 Server (Enterprise ed). Everything was set up perfectly, failover work on both cluster nodes. Now the question is my boss asked me a very basic question on which I'm unable to give him a detailed explanation on why can't used only a single IP Address for both MSCS cluster and SQL failover cluster? I replied back him (amateurish) its because of the requirement stated on SQL 2008 failover cluster. I can't even be allowed to install when I keyed in the already used IP Address for MSCS. Can any folks enlighten me on these? Best Regards

I have a newbe question about sql standard 2008, How do I merge 1 row of data from another DB to the

Hi everyone,

I am new to data base type work. I have very little exsperience in database code. I set up an application that retrieves data from the UI that has four forms. The application calculates and modifies this data for storage in different fields in a database. The application itself is not very simple as to the operation of the print and rs232 operations. But I have all of that code written and have written code for updateing the local db with this information. I was able thru searches to find enough information to update the local db.

I have not been able to find any code example for merging 1 row of data from one DB to another DB. That has the same data table and fields in both data bases.  Now these DB's are set up exactly same except for DB name and Table name. They have exactly the same field and column names. The only difference is the data in the primary key field, the database that is local builds two rows that the key field has the same data except for one letter and is build at different times. The remote data base has the same data in the key field except it does not have the letter at the end of the data.

sql 2008 installation question, windows installer version check?

sql 2008 installed, but didn't get pop up for windows installer 4.5, though intallation complete, but still wants to confirm the windows installer version, however, the windows 2008 seems not like w2k3 to show all windows components you installed, I only see .net 3.5sp1 on the appwiz.cpl

Potentially an inScope Question (SSRS 2008)

I have a problem which is similar to some of the others here, but not the same.

I'm trying to build a grid, like so

      Category1 Total
Delivered Target Attainment Delivered Target Attainment
2010 Q1 Jan 1 1 100% 1 1 100
    Feb 1 0   1 0 0
    Mar 1 2 50% 1 2 50%
    All Months 3 3 100% 3 3 100%

SQL Server 2000 to 2008 R2 db restore question

Hi guys

I've just restored a db (MS SQL 2000) unto MS SQL 2008. All went well and the users for that db were also created. But they were created on the db level.

On the server level, these logins were not there. I tried to create them manually at the server level. When I try to assign the login to the db it understandably says that the user with the same name already exists in the db.

I tried dropping the login created in the db level but I can't do so as there is a schema in the database with the username.

How should I go about getting the same login unto 2008 without dropping any schemas as I am trying to keep everything the same as it was in 2000 for testing purposes in 2008.

Thanks in advance.

SQL Server 2008 Licensing Question?

I know the same question is being asked many time from you, but I am curious to know the answer to my question.

SQL Server licensing says you don't have to purchase any new license for (Mirroring, Clustering, Log Shipping) as long as it is not up and running beyond 30 days and less or equal processors then the active sql server.

I want to check how the licensing works when the DR site is setup with SQL Transactional Replication, where the target server is just a stand-by but active.

Please Advise. Thanks in Advance

SQL Server 2008 instance question

Is it possible to install a SQL Server 2008 without giving it an instance name?  So that my dotnet applications' connection string won't need to change to "data source:dbServer\Instance;...", and still can use the "data source:dbServer;..."
Thanks for help.

SQL Server 2008 management tool and MSXML6 sp2 question

I would like to install the management tool on my WinXP SP3 machine.
When almost went through all processes, some error happened.  And I checked it's because of the MSXML6 SP2.  I need to uninstall the MSXML6, but just can't remove it from the Add/Remove program.  I tried to reinsatll the MSXML6 but it said a newer version is already there.
How do I solve this problem?
Thanks for help.

SQL Server 2008 Lock question

I'm using the SQL Server 2008 now.
I remember in the SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Manager, we can cancel some dead lock processes.  How do we do this in the SQL Server 2008?
By the way, what SELECT command can we apply to know those lock/dead lock processes?
Thanks for help.

question about applying 2008 SP1 on a active passive cluster

In the past (SS 2005), I was able to apply patches to to the virtual cluster host and it automatically detected both nodes and applied the patch.  This incurred downtime due to a reboot, but i did not care since this was a new cluster build.

Now, in 2008, the information I am finding implies that you should apply on passive node, perform a failover and then apply on other node.

I am curious if it is still possible to apply the patch like i did for SS 2005, where I just run the install a single time from the virtual cluster host, thereby letting the installer figure out  it is a cluster and apply to both nodes?

question about installing sql server 2008 express with another server...

I am doing a self-study of databases and right now i'm playing with mssql server 2008 express edition.

One of my buddies asked me, if i'm going to install two mssql version. let us say i have mssql server 2005 already installed. If i install 2008, will it affect everything that was done in mssql 2005? also, if i uninstall one of it, will it affect each other? even in a small fraction of the settings?

P.S. sorry, i haven't tried and test it myself because i'm still looking for an older mssql server express edition and the question we have right now is only based on our curiosity. Advance thanks to anyone who can share their knowledge and experience in this matter.
