WPF Designer failing to load in Windows 7 (x64)

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 20, 2010    Points: 0   Category :WPF
I have a new, "Clean" install of Windows 7 x64 edition (hard drive re-format and all).  Installed VS 2008 + SP1 from teh MSDN DVD's.  I do have a couple of third party component sets installed.  I've searched for the errors I'm getting, and based on the common responses, I have :

1) Removed and re-installed Visual Studio.  THis changed the message, but still fails.  I did not note the first message, sorry.
2) Do not have silverlight installed (unless it comes automagically with Windows 7)
3) Have never installed any beta versions of SP1
4) Tried removing third party components.  No effect.

If I now create a brand new, empty WPF project, and try to open the designer on the main dialog, I receive the following exception :

Could not load file or assembly 'WindowsBase, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

Visual Studio closes itself by opening aspx-Page designer after Windows Update

Hey Guys,

I've a problem with my Visual Studio.

On the 13th of August 2010 i installed a Windows update on my vista sp2 pc. For this date my Visual Studio 2008 sp 1 always has closed itself by opening an aspx-page in designer view. There is no error message just closing the window. I restored a backup of my windows from the time before updating it and it helped, i could open aspx pages in the design view till the update has been installed again automatically after rebooting the pc. I can't disable windows updates, cause it's my pc at work and safety is very important. I hope you could help me out of this disaster.

Designer crashes sometimes because application path becomes C:\Windows\system32

Sometimes VS crashes as it seems to execute the WPF designer in its directories or C:\Windows\system32. Sometimes it works fine as we can preview saved settings in the Designer. I have set application path as follows : ConfigFile = Path.Combine(AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory, "mixer.ser");<br/> When VS crashes I accept to debug it, the exception is : {"Access to the path 'C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\\Common7\\IDE\\mixer.ser' is denied."}    System.Exception {System.UnauthorizedAccessException} ... or c:\windows\system32 Any ideas on how to fix this ?   Thank you !

Windows 2008 R2/SQL 2008 SP1 CU5 active/active cluster keeps failing

I have set up many of the same clusters in the last few months, but this cluster specifically has been having lots of problems lately.  OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 latest patches SQL: SQL Server 2008 SP1 CU5 (version: 10.0.2746) Disks: VMAX SAN In the very beginning when I set up the cluster, the cluster validation kept failing when I tried to add a node.  Turned out that we had to unjoin the servers from the domain and rejoin.  Right after that the cluster validation succeeded, the second node joined the cluster, and quorum was changed to "Node and Disk Majority".  SQL was installed and set up as active/active (one sql instance on each node).  No issues then until SQL server was actually in use.  Symptoms: SQL server has heavy ETL processing plus being a subscriber of a sql replication.  The following errors first started on 4/24 when I set up sql replication (these servers are replication subscribers): EventID: 1127, Source: FailoverCluster, Task Category: Network Manager Cluster network interface 'man1fscl01a - Hartbeat to man1fscl91b' for cluster node 'man1fscl01a' on network 'ClusterHeartBeat' failed. Run the Validate a Configuration wizard to check your network configuration. If the condition persists, check for hardware or software errors related to the network adapter. Also check for failures in any other network comp

Workflow Service failing on high load

Hi, I am load testing my workflow service to ensure that it can sustain high loads for a high volume transaction application. I am using Visual Studio's Load Test to run on a simple unit test to call the workflow service. Visual Studio 2008 Failing to Add New Controls into *.designer.cs

I've encountered a situation with my current project where, when I add a new control, VS2008 is not adding it into the associated Designer file.  This is occurring with both a Web Page (ASPX) and a User Control (ASCX).At first I thought it was because I was going into the layout page and manually adding a control that way.  But then when I went back to dragging the controls right from the ToolBox the problem persisted. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?Robert

Hosted Designer fails to load workflow xaml that has InArguments with default values (xaml saved by

I have hosted the designer in our app. Using the hosted designer, workflows are saved as xaml to a database. When an end user wishes to edit a workflow the xaml is downloaded to a file and loaded into the designer via the .xaml file. The user can also associate assemblies with the workflow and there is a mechanism which makes sure that these assemblies are loaded into the appdomain and available. The problem we are hitting occurs when the top level activity (Sequence) has InArgument with default value. I create a simple Sequence, add InArguments (type of Int32 and String)  and set some default values. I save the workflow xaml to the database and close down the designer. When I wish to edit the workflow and try to load I get the following errors Could not find member '{clr-namespace:}_e905.argument3'. Could not find member '{clr-namespace:}_e905.argument1'. suggesting that some assembly/namespace missing. Here is the xaml I try to load: <Activity mc:Ignorable="sap" x:Class="{x:Null}" this:_e905.argument3="99" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/netfx/2009/xaml/activities" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" xmlns:mva="clr-namespace:Microsoft.VisualBasic.Activities;assembly=System.Activities" xmlns:s="clr-namespace:System;assembly=mscorl

SharePoint crawling - Windows authentication failing for STS4?

In a Sharepoint 2010 installation, we are trying to crawl the content of a small, single-node SharePoint installation. The crawling is partially successful. We are able to retrieve data delivered from the web services (_vti_bin/sitedata.asmx), but when the crawler tries to access the full page contents, it fails. The error message shown in the Crawl Log is: The crawler could not communicate with the server. Check that the server is available and that the firewall access is configured correctly. WPF Designer not displaying controls in the toolbox VS2008 Prof Edn running on Windows 7

My Version Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Version 9.0.30729.4462 QFE Microsoft .NET Framework Version 3.5 SP1 I have windows 7 home premium running on my machine I installed Visual C# 2008 Express Edn with SP1 first I got that running I then installed rest of the Express components including SQL. I then installed Visual Studio 2008 Prof Edn with .Net 3.5 SP1 I then installed .Net 4.0 I run two instance of  C# IDEs. The Pro End and the Express Edn. Both Express/Prof C# versions display controls in toolbox for Windows Forms correctly. I only have problems with controls in toolbox for WPF in VS 2008 Prof Edn. My Scenario : When I use Express Edition the design view of the WPF Designer, it displays the toolbox with controls populated for WPF that I can use. When I use Pro Edition the design view of the WPF Designer, it displays the toolbox with  NO controls visible for WPF  that I can use.  The toolbox has only  "general" tab with the words "not usable controls....". If I do a show all it does show controls but they are disabled/read only. When I look at the Tools -> Choose Toolbox Item , I get the tools dialog box. Inside the box within the WPF Components TAB all controls are not ticked/selected. If I tick the Button Control and select OK, the control does not appear on the toolbox. I have done reset Toolbox no change. I

MOSS 2007 - SharePoint Designer Workflow failing when using group vs individual user

I am creating a simple workflow in SharePoint designer that will email a selected user when a list is modified.  I am applying the condition "if modified by" in Designer.  This condition works fine and the email is sent when I select a specific user myDomain\username.  It does not work when I attempt to associate a SharePoint group with the "if modified by" filter. In my example the list has only one SharePoint group associated with it, this is the only group with permissions for the list.  The group contains multiple users. The workflow is successful with the following scenario: if modified by myDomain\user1 or if modified by myDomain\user2 The workflow fails with the follwoing scenario: if modified by mySharePointGroupName  (which includes myDomain\user1 and myDomain\user2) This would be an ungodly if statement with a large membership SharePoint group.  This would also be a nightmare as people leave the organization and their account credentials are left in the large if statement in the workflow.  Looking for the modified condition when associated with a group seems like the logical way of doing this. I also tried "myDomain\domain users" which accounts for all user in my domain, this failed as well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Picture failing to load on form

I have an .aspx page with a gridview and a details view for looking up products. It is working perfectly. When I select "Details" on the gridview the details view accurately populates.

I added an image named TagImageand need that image to display the correct one based upon the product changed when "Details" is hit. I'm using code behind and have checked my image directory string to make sure it is OK but the images do not display. Here is the vb.net code hehind I am using that successfully populates the details and was hoing it to display the picture:

Protected Sub GridView1_SelectedIndexChanged(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs)

        AccessDataSource2.SelectParameters("ProdID").DefaultValue = _
         TagImage.ImageUrl = "www.somewebsite.com/images/" + "ProdID" + ".jpg"     'e.g. image name = 1234.jpg and ProdID = 1234

    End Sub

p.s. I tried

TagImage.ImageUrl =

But when i added a Grid Control it lets me add more than one control to the Window ? Why is this so ?

Also whenever i runt the application and return to the designer pane it shows me a message saying that "An assembly or related document has been updated
which requires the designer to be reloaded.Click here to reload". Can somebody explain this to me.

Designer does not remember my settings, for ex., I want to always load xaml into xaml (code) view, n

I am using VS 2010 Ultimate.  It is not remembering my setup when opening .xaml files.  It is very annonying.  I  am pretty sure VS remembers things like that.

I prefer to load my .xaml file to see the code only.  So I usually minimize the design tab.  However, I have to do this every time I open a .xaml file.

I am getting the feeling this setting is stored at the .sln level, which is even more annonying, it should be global setting for all VS sessions.

Any advice?

Framework 3.5 SP1 will not load on Windows 7

I really need to upgrade from SQLSERVER 2005 Express to 2008 Express.   However, when I try to install, it tells me I must apply SP1 to Framework 3.5.    I have tried everything I could find in the documentation including removing Framework 2.0.   I downloaded the Windows Uninstaller program intending to just uninstall Framework 3.5, but it appears it uninstalls 50 - 60 programs if you run it.   What is so frustrating is that when I try to run the SP1 for Framework 3.5, it never gives a single message but just immediately drops back to the window from which I selected it.   I have tried  RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR with the same results.   I turned on the error logging in the WINDOWS INSTALLER in the registry, but I can not find any MSI*.log file to review for help.    Can anyone give me some guidance on this?

I have Visual Studio 2008 loaded and desire to get the Microsoft Web Developer loaded (which requires sql2008) and I am stuck on getting SP1 installed on the framework 3.5 before I can proceed to the next step.   I should also mention that I need 64 bit version, and I only find one sp1 for Framework 3.5 (dotnetfx35setup.exe).
