Forcing Sharepoint to open a link with Word emulator

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 20, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint

When you open a MS Word document from a document library, it opens it with what I call it's Word emulator (as opposed to a regular web-browser window).  However, if you hyperlink directly to that same document, Sharepoint opens it with a web-browser.

Is there a way to write the hyperlink to force Sharepoint to open it with the Word emulator?  (The hyperlink is going to be from the homepage of the Sharepoint site).

Word 2007 documents won't open from Sharepoint Services site

SharePoint 'Open with Access' - > 'Link to data on the SharePoint site' does not display data wi

Here's the scenario:

- I have a custom list in SharePoint 2010 with approximately 30 columns and 450 rows

- When I got to 'List Tools' -> 'List' -> 'Open With Access', I have two options 1) Link to data on the SharePoint Site and 2) Export a copy of the data

- If I select either option, I am able to view the items in my list in 'DataSheet' view and in the bottom right of Access I see the 'Online with SharePoint' text

- If I select the PivotTable view and drag in a column to either the row or column option, I have not seeing my data if I choose option #1 above (Link to data on the SharePoint Site).  I am able to see my values if I select option #2 above and view in PivotTable view

- If I click the 'Refresh Pivot' button in the ribbon still no data.

- If I got back to datasheet view, I see my data

Any ideas?

Sometimes sharepoint documents won't open until i close all word documents

I'm running into an issue with our sharepoint setup, and for some reason i'm the only one in the company having this issue.

When opening word documents from sharepoint every now and then (not everytime) my computer gives word focus, but the requested document doesn't load. I have to close the all word documents, click the document link again in sharepoint and then the sharepoint document opens.

When this happens I can still open local documents and sometimes I can have 5 sharepoint documents open but other times i can only have 2 or 1 document open. Even when working with the same documents.

I am completely lost as to where to start looking (Tried google, didn't find anything) but

- it's not reproducable, it happens often but not when you try to trigger it
- it doesn't happen with the same file all the time
- it doesn't happen after the same number of files every time
- it only happens to me.
- word can still open local files when it happens

The setup is:
- sharepoint 2007
- windows 7
- office 2010

So I am somehow inclined to think it's a client issue as i'm the only one having it (all laptops were initially installed using the same image) but then again it's only happening with sharepoint documents.

If anybody could help me or point me in a general direct

Cannot open Word document from sharepoint Shared Documents folder

Hey Every body

I have a very strange problem. Our Company has a Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 2007 solution running as our company Intranet solution.

We have a solution where outside users, can gain access to a workspace site on Sharepoint where diffrent people can work together on projects that involves both out side users and internal staff.
We have a folder called shares documents here we can upload documents that we want the other memebers off this workspace too see.
The problem is that internal staff can open up Word documents directly, but the external users are not able to open up directly these Word documents. Word just sayes that that is is unabel to open up the word document.
But when the users download the documents instead it works fine.

I have tries with both offcie 2003 and office 2007 and the problem is the same. But if i try to open up these documens via Open Office the problem due not exits, then is works fine. Why does Microsoft Word have these problems?

And is it just when the external users are opening up the documents directly from the sahred Documens folder that we have this problem.

The external users are connecting to our Citrix Netscaller security solution for authenticating purpoes first, after they have been validated through this solution, they ar

Word 2010 Crashes When Trying to Open/Download File From SharePoint 2010 Using IE8

I'm trying to find a solution to an issue I'm having with Word 2010/SharePoint 2010/ and IE 8 working (or rather not working) together.

I'm using Windows XP, and I have recently upgraded from Office 2007 to Office Pro 2010, in doing so, I can no longer open Word 2010 .doc or .docx files via our SharePoint site using IE8.  I can however, open these files without a problem using Chrome and Safari.  I would prefer to use IE8, as it provides better functionality in other areas for SP.

I have tried the following:

  • Unistall/Re-install of SharePoint Designer, IE8 and Office Pro 2010.
  • Ran the repair and config on Office 2010
  • Reset the IE security settings.
  • Unchecked the "automatically detect settings" box under the LAN connections.
  • Added our SP site to Trusted Sites
  • Disabled each view under Protected View in Word Options Trust Center.
  • Checked the Save settings under Word Options Save.

 - all steps either together or separate to no avail!

For a bit more detail - here's the error I'm receiving:
"Microsoft Word has encounted a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Office Services: Merging Word Documents on the Server Side with SharePoint 2010

Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 include a new set of components called Application Services. These put a rich set of tools in a developer's bag for Office automation. We'll show you how to use Office OpenXML, Word Automation Services and SharePoint to build a simple application that merges separate status reports into a single document.

SharePoint and Open XML: Generating Documents from SharePoint Using Open XML Content Controls

This article describes how to generate documents that contain data stored in SharePoint lists. The example demonstrates how OpenXML content controls can be defined to capture list data in a Word document and how LINQ to XML can be used to query the lists. The documents are generated from a SharePoint Web Part.

Can I open the "new" menu in a SharePoint Document Library using Dragon NaturallySpeaking?

When a user, who uses Dragon NaturallySpeaking, says "new" when viewing a Document Library the default content type is selected and the associated application (e.g. Microsoft Word) is launched. This scenario is okay for Content Type selection since the Microsoft Office applications will prompt for the metadata once the file is saved.

If the user needs to create new folders in the Document Library however they need to expand the "new" dropdown menu.

What is the best way for someone using Dragon NaturallySpeaking to expand the "new" menu for a Document Library in SharePoint?

Attachements problems - also - How to add Office Communicator link to sharepoint Form ?

I have created an Infopath 2007 form and published it to Sharepoint 2007.

1. I can add "attachements" to the form, but the function can handle only one attachement per link. If i need to add 10 attachements, i have to create 10 attachement functions to the form.

Is it possible to create one attachement function in the Infopath form, that is able to save several attachements under it?

2. Is it possible to save .exe, .msi and similar files to the form as attachements? Sharepoint says security settings prohibit this.

3. How can i add a link that shows up as MS Office Communicator link in the form? For example: John Smith in Office communicator is now Online. I want his name and his status to show also in the Infopath form, when somebody opens it in Sharepoint.

Please help!
