How does Twitter maintain password field on postback?

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 20, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

I know that for security reasons, it's generally frowned upon to try and maintain a password field on a postback, but I'd still like to figure out a way to have it done. For example, Twitter. If you try to start a new account, and let's say the username you've chosen has already been taken, the page posts back with an error. But, with Twitter, the password field does not clear. How are they doing this?

I find it annoying in a situation like this, because if the username is already taken, that means you have to go back and fill in the password field too.

How does Twitter do this?...

Using jQuery .hide() and .show() on panel sets doesn't maintain status through postback. Viewstate

I'm using jQuery against a set of three asp panels.  I set up an 'onChange' function for a dropdown list that dictates which panels to hide and show based on the UI selection.When the page first loads, one of the panels will be shown, the others will be hidden.  Let's say pnlOne is showing because the dropdown has option 1 selected.  This is done on the server with this:pnlOne.Style.Add("display","block");//and all the other panels are set to ".Style.Add("display","none");" based on logic.Then, the user selects a different value in the dropdown.  Let's say they select option number 2.  With javascript and jQuery I do this:$("#<%=pnlOne.ClientID %>").hide();$("#<%=pnlTwo.ClientID %>").hide();$("#<%=pnlThree.ClientID %>").hide();switch($("#<%= ddlOptionNumber.ClientID %> option:selected").text()){case "1":$("#<%= pnlOne.ClientID %>").show();break;case "2": etc.,}The issue is when the page posts back.  I'm running client side validation only at this point.  (Even if I add client side in the future I will still run client side as well to avoid security issues.)  When the validation functions detect an issue and the page returns to be displayed, the original panel (pnlOne)

Binding password to password field

I have a form that is used to add and edit data. Based on a dropdown selection, the form is either prepopulated or left blank so you can add new data.

I have a password field that is set to TextMode="Password" and works fine when adding new data, it displays ***** as you type..

Now if you select from the dropdown and there is already a record on file, it populates the form to allow you to edit the information.. Now i DONT want to display the password in plain text, but i want to populate the field so if they make any changes all field data is kept and table is updated with all of it.

I already debugged the page and my variable is being set with the password, but the textbox doesnt even show the ***** for the password value.

How to add multiple textboxes at runtime and maintain them after postback?

I'm trying to make a form that could have one or multiple textboxes. I have a textbox and a button to add  additional textboxes.

I have no problem adding a second textbox inside a panel but I want to be able to keep adding more textboxes every time the link button is clicked and later reference those boxes to be saved. I would also like to maintain the value of the textboxes there. They are not saved to the database until all the necesary texboxes have been added.

I added the textbox using:

private void button1_Click(Object sender, System.EventArgs e)

TextBox textbox1 = new TextBox();

that works fine, but when i click the button again it doesn't add an additional  textbox which is what i need.

any suggestions?

thank you

Maintain Scroll position on postback in a asp:panel?

Hi, I'm having a lot of trouble figuring this out. I'm unable to hold the scroll position in the postback in a panel that I set up with a gridview. I tried some of the links offered in the previous threads and it still doesn't seem to be working. Here's the code I have so far, maybe I am missing something small.

<asp:Panel runat="server" ScrollBars="Vertical"
                 scrollPOS="<%=saveScrollPos.value %>"
                 style="BEHAVIOR: url(<%=ResolveURL('../Includes/ScrollPos.htc')%>); WIDTH: 4000px; HEIGHT: 1000px" >
                 <input id="saveScrollPos" type="hidden" runat="server" name="saveScrollPos"/>
                   <asp:MultiView ID="MultiView1" runat="server">
                    <asp:View ID="View1" runat="server">

jQuery $(document).ready() and ASP.NET Ajax asynchronous postback

Many call it the ASP.NET jQuery postback problem, but using the technique below should make it no problem anymore. $(document).ready() isn't called after an asynchronous postback. What this means? You lose the functionality that should be executed within $(document).ready() after an UpdatePanel rendered its contents after an asynchronous postback.

Enabling Users to Maintain SharePoint Content

When SharePoint is installed as a corporate intranet, there is a considerable amount of effort involved in maintaining the content to keep the site relevant. As we discussed in the first few parts of this series, SharePoint has many built-in features to reduce the burden on the site administrator.

Some areas of the site usually contain less-dynamic information. Internal memos and corporate policies are common examples of this information. One option for this information is to post these documents in a document library. Documents in a library are often stored in a few different formats: Word, Acrobat (PDF), or HTML. Each of these formats has its drawbacks.

jQuery live() and ASP.NET Ajax asynchronous postback

The issue is that normally $(document).ready() is called when the DOM is ready to be manipulated. But this doens't happen after an ASP.NET Ajax asynch postback occurs.

This means that the initial jQuery bindings won't be automatically available after the asynchronous postback is over. I underline "automatically" here because my last post describes more possibilities, how this issue can be worked around.

symmetric key protected by a password

An alternative could be using a symmetric key protected by a password, as long as your application generates the CREATE SYMMETRIC KEY and OPEN SYMMETRIC KEY statements directly instead of calling them inside a SP (otherwise the password will still be passed as a parameter, and will be in clear in the profiler).
