Using LINQ to Get Filtered List of Controls

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 20, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

I have zero experience with LINQ but had occasion to use it today.  I implemented a working solution but do have a question.

First, let me provide the background:

I have 20 large web pages that altogether have several hundred data input controls on them.  There are strong similarities between how each type of control is handled.  Rather than wire up each control individually (ie. hard code it in the layout page), I thought it would be a lot easier to just do so dynamically through a common method.  On each of these web pages there's a MultiView control, inside of which are 2+ View controls.  The guts of my original version of the common method looked like this:

      foreach (View view in multiView.Controls)
        foreach (Control ctrl in view.Controls)
          switch (ctrl.GetType().Name)
            case "DropDownList":
              DropDownList ddList = (DropDownList)ctrl;

C#, LINQ: (List<>) Question???

Hi Everyone,

I have a strange problem:

There is an entity (Table) called "Filters" in my .edmx which has all my tables and stuff in it (to use it for LINQ queries)

I have created a class called "CustomFilters" which inherits "Filters". So now my cutom class has all the properties of the original "Filters" class (table) and 1 more additional property that i wanted which is a List of "CustomFilters":

List<CustomFilters> children = new List<CustomFilters>();

Now i get all my records into:

List<CustomFilters> theOriginalList = new List<CustomFilters>();

NOTE: first all records are tken into a List<Filters> and then these are added into List<CustomFilters> where List<CustomFilters> for children of that record is added, and then children of the child records, and so on......

so now, every record is an instance of CustomFilters which has a property named "children" which is a list again; and each child again has instanaces of "CustomFilters", and each instance again has children...and on and on and on.....

(basiacally its a data source for a treeview in my silverlight control)

every thing is good and working as expected.

how to hide/display controls in NewForm.aspx based on dropdown value in SharePoint list

I have 1 dropdown in my sharepoint list with other columns. If dropdown value equal to 'xyz' i need to display some other controls, otherwise these controls should be hidden.

Thanks & Regards, Neerubee

proper pattern for list of reusable controls

Say you have a for loop which renders a bunch of the exact same control.  This is probably done with RenderAction or RenderPartial.

What is a way to ensure that each of these controls in the list gets wrapped in a div with a unique ID?

Problem with list controls and update progress template

I have an update panel that surrounds a wizard control which I use in conjunction with a update progress control. Now my update progress control works perfectly, with my animated gif and div tag that lays over my wizard control when the user goes from step to step. However, there is a problem that I am struggling to solve. A number of my steps use controls like list boxes, and when the update progress control fires, the list control is not laying underneath my div an animated gif no matter how high a make my css z-index on the div.

Does anyone have a way of solving this?

How to handle null while converting from my datatable to List<> using LINQ

I am converting my datatable to LISt using LINQ
how do I handle nulls coming from database

List<Port> portDetails = new List<Port>();
DataTable dt = ds.Tables[0];
portDetails = (from q in dt.AsEnumerable()
select new Port
PortCode = q.Field<string>("Code"),
ExtCode = q.Field<string>("Nb"),
Name = q.Field<string>("Name"))

In the above query if Code is null I do not want property
portcode to be set to the value it should only set if it is
not null or not blank
PortCode = q.Field<string>("Code"),

What should be syntax
I was trying somethign like this which doesnt work
Portcode = q.Field<bool>("Code") == null ? null : q.Field<bool>("Code")

How do you change the datasource for a list based on another? ie a secondary list being a filtered

I'm actually using Sharepoint 2007, but am hoping this forum will help.  We want to be able to create a list based on a filtered view of another list.  I can create a Filtered List in Designer, but evidently this is saved as a query object on the server and not as another list that can be selected when using the basic Sharepoint tools.  In other words, it's only visible when in Designer.  This means that in order to use this for say a lookup column in another list object, I have to modify the datasource tags for the EditForm and NewForm.aspx pages within Designer.  Also, it means that adding a column would constantly require use of Designer.  We need this to be simple as not all those tasked with administrating pages will know how to do this.  I thought it would be easier if I could simply source a secondary list with the filtered list I created in designer.  In other words, make a secondary list source be that of a queried view of a master list.  Then this list could be used with all the simple tools provided.  Is this possible?  If so... how?

Compile issue with List<> and Linq

I am pretty sure this is some framework version issue but I am getting this on a (custom layout) page compile migrated over from MOSS. The following code complies in my MOSS 2007 environment but does not in my new 2010 environment. Thanks in advance for any help. Code section #1: private bool isSuccessReturnCode(string s) { bool bReturn = false; // Following line fails looking for ';' XDocument loaded = XDocument.Parse(s); var q = from c in loaded.Descendants("Node") select (string)c.Element("ReturnCode");   Code Section #2 private InvoiceItem getInvoiceItem(Guid ID) { List<InvoiceItem> InvoiceItems = ((List<InvoiceItem>)ViewState["INVOICEITEMS"]);

Insert a "Select User" row in Linq for a dropdown list

I'm new to Linq. I have searched and searched the web for a soluion, and can't find anything. I have a Linq query and I want to insert a row ("Select User") to the top before I pass it to the drop down list. I've been trying to use the Union but to now avail (it keeps telling me that my object doesn't support the Union method). My code, prior to attempting to inser a row, is very simple.public SelectList DropDown_Users()        {            var context = new VivarianDataContext();            var query = from t in context.AspnetUsers                        select new { t.UserId, t.LastName };            list = new SelectList(query.AsEnumerable(), "UserId", "LastName");            return list;        }Now I try to insert a row and I found this on the internet and it seems to say that his solution will work. But it is filled with syntax errors. http://magicode.wordpress.com/2009/08/20/inserting-an-item-in-iqueryable-object-using-union-met

How to update List Items with LINQ?

In the code below, the For Each will loop through the list and populate the ListBox.  When I add "item.LeadTime = 5" to try updating an item, Visual Studio says that it is ReadOnly.  Any ideas on what's wrong or missing from the code? Dim spWebUrl As String = SPContext.Current.Web.Url Dim dc As New MyDataContext(spWebUrl) Dim Asgns = From a In dc.GetList(Of AssignmentsItem)("Assignments") Select a.LeadTime, a.Frequency For Each item In Asgns      ListBox1.Items.Add(item.Frequency)      item.LeadTime = 5      dc.SubmitChanges() Next

Multiple issues with dropdown list controls not working correctly

I am using WSS 3.0 and SharePoint Designer.  I have modified one of the items in my NewForm page so that I have a filtered lookup using a spdatasource. The filter works great, but my issue is that I can't seem to save the users selection back to the list itself.

Issue when using an ASP.NET dropdown list
I am able to bind the filtered spdatasource to an ASP.NET dropdown list control, however the item that is selected in the dropdown list is not being saved back to the list.  I am guessing that this is because the dropdown list itself is not tied directly to the appropriate list item, but... I can't seem to figure out how or where to do this.  I don't see anything in the data properties box in SharePoint Designer that allows me to tie the data back to the list itself.  Maybe I am just overlooking it somewhere?

Issue when using the native SharePoint Data View DropDownList with a filtered spdatasource
When I select "Data Fields..." on the dropdown control I get the Change Data Bindings dialog box.  From here I can select a data field to save the value back to (which resolves the issue noted for the asp.net control) and I can select my spdatasource, but... the display text and value fields below that never populate.  Thus, the dropdown list is empty when the user is filling ou

Filtered list values in InfoPath

Hi all

I can receive data from a list in InfoPath, and data, but I want to filter the data and show it in a drop down list in InfoPath.
If at all, how can data from a SharePoint list be filtered in InfoPath?

Adding windows forms controls to the display of list items

I'm new to Sharepoint development, and was wondering if I could get some brief pointers to get me going in the right direction.  I'm required to add a button to list items that on submit does some manipulation of the data in the fields inside the item and then sends that data off to an external webservice.  The complexity is sufficient to warrant managed code, i.e. C#.

What I'd like to know is how to approach integrating this code into Sharepoint.  I've read about web parts, but viewing list items doesn't involve web part pages on my installation so I can't include my own.  What other ways are there of doing this?

Cheers all

Invalid postback or callback argument (using Cascading dropdown list controls)

i use cascading dropdown lists (in a user registration form) and when the user hits the submit button i get the error:

"Invalid postback or callback argument"

I've seen on the net that this is a problem dating back many years but still haven't found a solution to this.

 I've read about changing EnableEventValidation to false, but this poses a security risk.

Anyone knows a good solution to this? (i'm coding in c#)
