Cluster SQL 2005 SP3 (system databases)

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 20, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

Hello All !

I have a MSCS cluster Windows 2003 Ent SP2 R2 (2 nodes en Active / Passive) and I install SQL 2005 SP3. I need to install 2 MS SQL Server instances on this cluster.

I have volumes shared disks: - Q for Quorum, M for MSDTC, L for logs, S for Datas, T for TempDB, X for Indexes

I want to put system databases on Y.

I have a doubt:

I have 2 SQL instances (ISQL1 and ISQL2), do I need a separate volume for the system DBs (master, model, msdb, tempdb) per instance?

or  do I need one volume for all the system DB (Y) for the 2 instances?

Thanks for advance for your ideas / help - Regards - Have a nice day ! RHUM2

Can Not load WPF project in Visual Studio 2005 on Win7 64 system, says "Project file not supported b

Dear all I am facing an issue in creating new wpf project or loading a WPF project in Visual studio 2005. I have installed Visual Studio 2005 Service pack - 1 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=bb4a75ab-e2d4-4c96-b39d-37baf6b5b1dc&displaylang=en) but still I can not see the option for wpf project  while creating a new project. Generally we can see WPF listing under item File -->New-->Project--> ".Net Framework 3.0" in VS 2005. I have few WPF project and when i try to load them it says "Project file not supported by this Installation". My System Config is given below: OS: Windows 7 (64 Bit) VS: Visual Studio 2005 with Service Pack 1 .Net Framework: 3.5 (By default inbuilt in Win7 OS)   I am suspecting something bugging related to .Net framework 3.0 in Win7. We have one option in control panel to alter .NetFramework 3.5 under "Turn Windows Features on or Off" but there I can not see something related to 3.0 :-(.   Kindly suggest how can I load my existing project and how can enable option to create new wpf Projects.   I saw few solutions suggested by people on following Thread bt most of them related to Windows XP or Vista: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/vswpfdesigner/thread/06cf7bca-982c-44cf-aec9-99cf399b3000 Do someone has solution for Windows 7 (64 bit OS)

SQLServer 2008 Tools and SQL 2005 Cluster

I recently built a SQL Server 2005 cluster on the o/s Windows Server 2008 R2.  I have been attempting to connect to the cluster from my Windows 7 dekstop with my SQL Server 2008 Tool set.  I have been unable to attach to this cluster since its creation. The firewall is temp off, remote connections in the surface area configuration is set to pipes and tcp/ip and the Browser surface is up and running. I ran Wireshark against the cluster and I could see that there was UDP conversations for ms-sql-m (SQL Port) but that was as far as it would get.  I am using a named instance so not using 1433, but I do see the cluster offering up high RPC ports but the client never responds after the initial UDP response. When I noticed that there was a two way conversation taking place, I went to a seperate machine and fired up SQL Server 2005 Tools and I was easily able to attach to the cluster.  So my question is - Are there any known incompatibilities between SQL Server 2005 cluster services and SQL Server 2008 Tool set?  I can use my 2008 tools to attach to a non-clustered SQL Server 2005 w/o issue.   Error when attempting to connect: A network-related or instance-specific error occured while establishing a connection to sql server.  The server was not found or was not accessible.  Verify that the instance name is correct and the SQL Server is con

removing guest account from sql 2005 databases

I cannot remove the guest account from my databases.  I know that I cannot and should not remove the guest account from master and tempdb.  but when i try to remove it from other databases I get some message about the guest account being a in schema or something like that.  so what should i do? thanks

'System.OutOfMemoryException' SQL Server 2005

Looking for a solution to SQL Server 2005 'System.OutOfMemoryException' error, or at least the root cause of this error.   Following please find:1) Description of problem2) Exact error message3) Query that fails (against large 'SourceTable', but works against smaller subsets of 'SourceTable' )4) Query that works (above, split apart) on any size table5) Machine and SQL configuration and versions DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM-------------------------------------------------------I am getting a 'System.OutOfMemoryException' error running a simple query on a large table in SQL SERVER 2005. If I run with a fresh boot, only me on the server, and only SQL Server Management Studio open with 1 query window, I'll get this error when I run it against my full-sized SourceTable.  Task Manager indicates there is still more than 7 Gig of physical memory available! (see system configuration at end of this note).   The query runs to competion if I run it against a smaller 'SourceTable'.    If I break out the matchup to the derived table from the query into a separate step, the query will run until completion against any size table I throw at it.   I've searched the web, and found that people are getting this error with SQL Server 2005, but not with SQL Server 2000.  It looks like people are encountering it in various queries that should work, and in other circumstances such as when runn

SQL Server 2005 - Installation in Cluster Environment - "Service SQL Server Browser (SQLBrowser) fai

Reinstalled SQL 2005 on cluster won't start.

OS: Windows Server 2003 32-bit. Cluster: 2-node Active/Passive We're working on upgrading from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008, and we're using this cluster to test the cluster upgrade/install procedures. So, updated the existing SQL 2005 instance to SQL 2008. This went fine. Added an additional SQL 2008 instance. This went fine. Uninstalled SQL 2008 (both instances) from both nodes. This went fine. Installed SQL 2005 (clustered setup). At the end of the install process, received a message about unable to do (something). However, the install reported successful. In the SQL0001_<computername>_Core(local) are these messages: Running: OpenPipeAction at: 2010/7/24 10:20:31 Complete: OpenPipeAction at: 2010/7/24 10:20:31, returned false Error: Action "OpenPipeAction" failed during execution. and much later: Error: Action "UninstallForRS2000Action" failed during execution.  Error information reported during run: Action: "UninstallForRS2000Action" will be marked as failed due to the following condition: In the SQL0001_<computername>_Core.log: Running: LaunchLocalBootstrapAction at: 2010/7/24 10:11:30 Error: Action "LaunchLocalBootstrapAction" threw an exception during execution.  Error information reported during run: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\setup.exe" finished and returned: 0 Aborting que

"None of the selected features can be installed" error on SQL 2005 Cluster

Hey All, I installed SQL 2005 on a cluster.  Everything on the primary node works fine.  However, as the documentation suggests, the SQL Management Studio (and other tools) are not installed on the standby node by default.  However, when I go to try and install on the 2nd node I get the following error: TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Setup------------------------------ None of the selected features can be installed or upgraded. Setup cannot proceed since no effective change is being made to the machine. To continue, click Back and then select features to install. To exit SQL Server Setup, click Cancel. For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.1399.06&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=SQLSetup90&EvtType=28108 ------------------------------The link is referencing something about requiring a complex SA password.   I can verify that the directory structure on node 1 where the management studio and client tools exist does not exist on node 2.   I'm at wits end here, I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling/everything. Anyone have any ideas? thanks!

Procedure to move all SP 2010 databases from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008 R2

I have a single SharePoint 2010 WFE with a single SQL 2005 64-bit backend.  I need to decomission the SQL 2005 server.  What is the best procedure to move all the SharePoint associated databases to SQL 2008 R2? I have already read this MS doc on moving all databases: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc512725.aspx So the actual move procedure is standard SQL fodder. What I'm not clear about is what to do about the "other" SharePoint databases and how to reassociate them once the DBs are on the new SQL server.  For example, the Usage and Health DB is going to "Wss_Logging" and it specifies my old SQL server.  It is greyed so I cannot chagne it in Central Admin.  How do I let SharePoint know that these databases have been moved too?

Cannot rebuild system databases in 2008R2

I'm trying to rebuild system databases, but after installing 2008 R2, this no longer work. Here is what I do: I open a command prompt in the below folder: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\SQLServer2008R2 Here, I execute: SETUP /ACTION=REBUILDDATABASE /INSTANCENAME=a /SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS=TK\Tibor /SAPWD=Pa$$w0rd /Q I get below error in the console window: The following error occurred: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. Error result: 1152035024 Result facility code: 1194 Result error code: 43216 Please review the summary.txt log for further details There is no trace of the rebuild in the summary.txt file. A folder *is* however created in the log directory for the rebuild (20100601_163136), and in here I have a file named Detail_ComponentUpdate.txt. In this file, I can find below errorr, which I believe is the root of the problem. Can anybody else perform rebuild? Any ideas or hints? 2010-06-01 16:32:04 Slp: Running Action: ExecuteInitWorkflow 2010-06-01 16:32:04 Slp: Workflow to execute: 'INITIALIZATION' 2010-06-01 16:32:04 Slp: Error: Action "Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.BootstrapExtension.ExecuteWorkflowAction" threw an exception during execution. 2010-06-01 16:32:04 Slp: Microsoft.SqlServer.Setup.Chainer.Workflow.ActionExecutionException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. ---> System.

need help moving System Center SQL Databases to new SQL Server about30 databases to be moved...

We are running various System Center products, SCSM, SCVMM, SCCM, DPM, OPALIS. and a few other servers all using the same SQL server, which currently is a VM. We have configured and built a new Physical box that will replace this. In the past we have moved SQL databases by doing a full backup and then restoring the backup on the new server, then renaming the servers, both network name and internal sql name.  This has worked fine in the past. However I've never had to move 30 databases before, nor have I had to move reporting services. Is there a better method. a recomended method?

Purpose of "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" login in SQL Server 2005

Hi All Does anybody know what the "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" login create during a SQL Server 2005 instillation is used for? Does this login pose a security risk, and can it be removed safely?  It seems to me as if it is similar to the "Bultin\Administrator" login which we remove from our production servers? Regards Stevo
