Deploying taxonomy term store and managed meta column from development machine to production machine

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 17, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
Hi, In my development environment, I created a taxonomy term store by importing a CSV file. I also created a site column of type "managed meta data" based on that term store. Now, I want to migrate to production environment. What is the best way to do this? When I generate the schema of my site column, it looks like this: <Field Type="TaxonomyFieldTypeMulti"    DisplayName="Article Type"    List="{d8b20e4f-ce12-4def-b59d-d44da2c13234}"    WebId="eef74e7c-a852-4c89-b811-e31b86853641"    ShowField="Path1033"    Required="FALSE"    EnforceUniqueValues="FALSE"    Group="Custom Columns"    ID="{47f78411-65fa-43c9-8cb8-68955aea1256}"    SourceID="{eef74e7c-a852-4c89-b811-e31b86853641}"    StaticName="Article_x0020_Type"    Name="Article_x0020_Type"    Version="4"    Mult="TRUE"    Sortable="FALSE"> <Default></Default> <Customization> <ArrayOfProperty> <Property> <Name>SspId</Name> <Value xmlns:q1="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" p4:type="q1:string" xmlns:p4="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">99d

Taxonomy term store additions via site setting are not visible to user in RC1

Is see that its possible to define Taxonomy term store via SharePoint main central  admin page. But when I try to add term store entries via a new site in the same collection ....  site setting -> Site Administration -> Term store management any new entries are not visible. That is to say when a user starts to enter a tag the helper dialog does not show any values added via the site but all values add via the central admin do appear. this seems like a bug and the is in RC1 or am I doing something wrong

How to filter managed meta data column using page query string?

I have two managed term sets as follows: Articles:Downloads Projects:Downloads I am trying to use a content query web part to filter a list based on the above manged meta data column. I want to filter out only "Articles:Downloads" Scenario 1: When I edit the web part and directly set the filter option with the managed meta data column to "Articles:Downloads" it works fine. When I export the web part, in the .webpart file, the "FilterValue1" property has a value "Downloads|9096e43b-555d-4879-9acc-b4ada9ea9910". Scenario 2: I want the web part to get the filter information from query string [PageQueryString:pageType]. So I tried using these options: a) pageType=Downloads      This works but returns downloads under 'projects' as well. (i want downloads only under 'articles')  b) pageType=Articles:Downloads     Does not work and shows no records c) pageType = Downloads|9096e43b-555d-4879-9acc-b4ada9ea9910     Does not work. (This value is the same as one found in 'FilterValue1' of the static web part). c) pageType = Articles:Downloads|9096e43b-555d-4879-9acc-b4ada9ea9910     Does not work. d) pageType = 9096e43b-555d-4879-9acc-b4ada9ea9910     Does not work.   What am I missing here? Can some one please help?

Auth. across subdomains prevents Auth. on development machine

Is there any solution to the following scenario (which I'm in right now)...? I have 2 related websites under 2 related but distinct subdomains, 1 web server, 1 membership database Prior to configuring  these for cross-domain login, I could test the website in my development server that comes with VS2008. Then i make the following changes in the web configs of each site: identical authentications->forms element, both referencing the same domain identical machinekey elements identical membership, profile, and role providers with applicationName="/" And now, I just can't login. I can reset the password, access the db, etc, but i think because the development machine isn't in the subdomain or something, it won't let me test the rest of the authenticated-users-only pages. It's a very simple test I'm trying to do. There's very few pages, and a barebones webconfig in each, except for the elements inserted above. How can I get this to work so that I can test/debug from my development machine and still login and do everything I need to?  Thanks!

Deploying SSIS Package configurations in production and development

I'm working on a SSIS package which I want to deploy onto our development environment on a daily basis as I work on it. In addition, I want it to be easy to deploy to production. We're using xml configuration files for our packages, but I haven't seen anyone discuss the entire development process.

Do people keep their production and development configuration files in source control? If so, how? Are they part of your BIDS SSIS project? I tried adding them to "Miscellaneous". i.e. Example:

I have a project with the following SSIS Packages in it:

In the Miscellaneous folder I have:

I did this so I can keep them in source control. We don't use package deployment utilities, we just deploy by hand, but putting the files in Miscellaneous breaks the building of the deployment utilities because it attempts to copy the config files into the Deployment directory twice.

In addition, I set up the package configurations such that the

How to add custom properties to terms in the SharePoint 2010 managed metadata term store?

There is a "Term.CustomProperties" collection to get the collection of custom property objects for the current Term object from the read-only dictionary.
But where and how to define and set custom properies for terms? This dictionary seems to be read-only by default.

Any help / documentation would be appreciated. / Frank

best practice in creating a development machine

hi, I have been working on sharepoint for sometime now..I have mastered the sharepoint designer workflow. however, it is kinda limited...and I am thinking of exploring the backend development of MOSS, I have been posting some enquiries on this forum, and came to know about visual studio workflow and event features.

The thing is, I only have two servers in my organisation, MOSS runs on one server and SQL server runs on another. Visual studio isn't installed on the MOSS server, and there is no development taking place in MOSS server right now.

Q1 - I have got another development machine, installed with windows server 2008 and MOSS and Visual Studio, but I have named the machine differently as all the machines in my organization are connected to a domain. I think I also made a mistake by creating a different site collection instead of using a similar name as the current server. Can I know what are the best practices used when it comes to planning a development machine?

Q2 - I have created a simple event feature testing thingy on the development machine and it works, how do I export it over to MOSS server, cause..I have mentioned the site url in the C# code, but the exact url in  the server is different.  Is there some kinda guide that I can refer to..should I install visual studio on the server itself ( wierd )

vastly different performance of update query on development machine and on server

Using VisualWebDeveloper 2010 on the development machine. All nice and fast.

Using VisualWebDeveloper 2008 on the server. Server runs on Windows Server 2008 and has IIS 7.

It looks like that when 'table', a datatabe filled up in C# code behind, is getting longer (say 100 rows), then the server (whether running the website on IIS or on the local host of VIsualWebDeveloper2008!!!) is really slowing down. Checked it in debug mode and traced it down to

This line takes 5 seconds to execute, with 100 rows. On the development machine, it takes almost no time.

How can that be?

Are there any know issues? Could it be that there is incompatibility between different version of SQL server or something like that? The update works, it is just awefully slow, but only on the server.

What's going on? And how to solve it?

Thank you.

Best regards,

Synchronizing schema from local development machine to remote web server

As a single developer in a small business I'm developing a data-driven website on my local machine using VS2008 Professional (I also have 2010 Professional)

It is then synchronised with a dedicated server using Expression Web (ditto design)

I'm using SqlExpress both machines and as features are added, I want to synchronize the dedicated server schema from the local schema

VS2010 has such a feature, but it's a ____ of a price to pay for one feature - basically adding fields as I add functionality.

I'm surprised SqlServer doesn't have such a feature built in - am I missing something?

(I've trialled RedGate SqlCompare, but it can't access the remote db, and I'm reluctant to enable SqlServer Remote Connections on a machine I don't own).

Exporting taxonomy term set from a term store?

Hi all,

We have been building our demonstration environment in MOSS 2010 Beta, and would like to find a way to export the taxonomy from the term store so we can import into the production environment.

Is there any way to accomplish this? (MSFT took the time to develop an Import function; maybe they also thought to add an Export function?)

Auto-Update Managed Metadata Term Store from External DB or List

Hi all,

I have been able to import terms using the .CSV file within the MMSA Term Store, but is there a way to auto-update the terms from an external list. Example: An external database already has terms and adds terms on a regular basis. Is there a method for updating the Term Store automatically when terms are added in the external source. Perhaps creating a SharePoint List populated with external data and somehow linking this up to the Managed Metadata terms? I know that System keywords are added to the term store when a user tags an item, but is there a way to tie into this functionality for managed metadata?

Deploying an .asmx Web Service on a Windows Server 2003 machine

Hi, I have created a WEb Service using Visual Studio 2008 on an XP PC. I have sucessfully deployed the web service and tested it correctly on my local machince. It is located at http://localhost/MAC/Service.asmx.

Now, what I want to do is deploy this Web Service on a server. The server is running Windows Server 2003 Web Edition. I thought it was only a matter of copying the "UMACS" folder on my XP PC, which includes the Service.asmx, web.cong and service.cs files etc, and then copy this to the server and try to deploy it through IIS.

I have tried this but everytime I try to access http://localhost/MAC/Service.asmx like before, I get "Error 404: Web site cannot be found". I have done a lot of searching on this. I have enabled IIS apping use the command "c:WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\1.1.4322\aspnet_regiis.exe -i" but still this doesn't work.

Is there something else I need to do to deploy this web service?

In the IIS on the server, there is a "Web Service Extensions" section. Do I have to do something in here first to make it work?

Can I use Netbook as my development machine?

Daily I spend lot of time in travelling.  I am planning to buy a netbook so that I can use it while travelling to my office.  My question is if I install visual studio 2008/10 on my netbook will work properly?  Will netbook be able to execute visual studio and other tools efficiently?
In short, can I use netbook as my development machine?  Because what I have heard is netbook is nothing but mini laptops and it is mostly used for internet browsing.  But can these mini laptops behave like a development machine?

Deploying Publishing SharePoint site from development to test and production environment.

I have created a Publishing Site in SharePoint 2010, with pages created from custom page layouts, content types and Publish Content areas which I have created using SharePoint Designer 2010.

Also, I created custom Lists, Libraries and workflows in my development environment.

I want to replicate the site in test/production environment.

Can you please suggest me the best way to package all, along with custom site settings from development environment so that I can migrate small changes to test/ production environment later also without creating .wsp as I have access to SharePoint designer 2010 only.

Need help using control adapters at the machine level

Hi guys!

Let me explain our situation. I do web development at a university at which we have to meet strict accessibility guidelines. I've specially modified the adapters (as well as extended CompositeDataBoundControlAdapter to include GridView) for use on our site and to use with our global stylesheets as well as compiled the control adapters into a DLL.

The control adapters now all reside in the WebServices.CssFriendlyAdapters DLL.  (For example, WebServices.CssFriendlyAdapters.GridViewAdapter).

Currently, when someone drops an App_Browsers folder in to their site with the adapters specified, the adapters work. However, we'd like to be able to specify this in the C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\(version number)\CONFIG\Browsers directory so that the adapters work automatically without anyone having to move anything into App_Browsers for every site. To ensure that someone can still use the "old way" or will not be confused by their controls being adapted, I've written in code that uses the base rendering methods unless xhtmlConformance is set to "Strict" in the site's web.config file.

Anyway, on to the problem. When trying to compile the controlAdapters into the C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\(version number)\CONFIG\Browsers directory using aspnet_regbrowsers.exe (see http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms229858.a
