Installing 2008 express after VS2010 pro

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 16, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server
I have just installed Visual Studio 2010 Professional on my laptop and it installed a basic version of SQL Server 2008 Express with no management tools. I would like to install the Full SQL Server 2008 Express on my laptop, but when I download and run SQLEXPRADV_x86_ENU.exe (advanced version with tools) or even just 2008SQLManagementStudio_x86_ENU.exe (management studio only), it extracts the files, runs a command prompt window for about 2 seconds and then closes and deletes the files it just extracted. I am installing on a laptop with Windows XP Pro SP3. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!j

Having problems installing/setting up SQL Server 2008 Express/R2 for ASP.NET user management on deve

I'm a bit new to installing and configuring, well, just about anything regarding databases, so please bear with me. I'm currently building a couple of ASP.NET MVC 2 sites.  I'm following along with the MVCMusicStore tutorial, and am trying to set up user management using ASP.NET's configuration tool.  The problem is that ASP.NET can't 'see' the database. I have SQL Server 2008 installed on my laptop.  It's the version which is available on the Web Platform Installer (I believe it's Express).  When I try running the aspnet_sqlreg.exe program to set up my user management database, it can't tell that I'm running any version of SQL Server at all.  I get an exception about 'named pipes', and some other things I don't understand at the moment. Obviously, this is all a bit over my head.  Is there an idiot proof guide or tutorial available that describes, step-by-step, how to: 1. Install SQL Server 2008 on a development PC 2. How to configure it to be used by Visual Studio 2010 Professional 3. How to properly upload/modify the db on the production server with what's on the development PC Essentially, all the things that the ASP.NET tutorials gloss over.  Any suggestions, links to documentation, or other nudges in the right direction would be immensely appreciated.

Unable to install SQL Server 2008 Express R2 after installing .NET 4.0

Hi experts, I intend to redistribute SQL Server 2008 Express R2 in my installer. I've extracted the setup files from SQLEXPR32_x86.exe and pass in the appropriate command line parameters during the setup. Recently, I noticed if I applied the following Windows Update: .NET 4.0 Client Profile, I will hit into the following error when I installed SQL express. .NET Runtime 4.0 Error Reporting EventType clr20r3, P1 setup100.exe, P2 10.50.1600.1, P3 4bb67524, P4 mscorlib, P5, P6 4ba1da6f, P7 44f0, P8 32, P9 system.security.security, P10 NIL. .NET Runtime Application: setup100.exe Framework Version: v4.0.30319 Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception. Exception Info: System.Security.SecurityException Stack: at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Setup.Setup.DebugBreak() at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Setup.Setup.Main() Running the setup.exe from a file server will give these errors but if I copied the entire setup files to a local folder and run setup.exe from there, it runs fine. May I know what am I missing? I definitely need to support to install SQL express running from a file server location. Thanks, MK

Error 0x84BB0001 while installing SQL Server Express 2008 SP1

Hello,   One of our internal customers is getting an error 0x84BB0001 while installing SQL Server 2008 Express SP1.  His operating system is Windows XP SP3 and he should have all of SQL's prerequisites. I've seen a few postings of this error, but no explanations/resolutions.   Thanks.

Upgraded to SQL Server 2008 Express R2 64bit and now all my VS2010 db apps won't run

I am running WIN764bit, VS2010 and just "upgraded" from SQL server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 Express R2 64 bit.  When I went back into VS2010 and tried to run and test several database apps that I have developed, I find that I keep getting the error "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instrance".  I have read a lot of threads here but I am not getting anywhere.  I can create a new SQL Server database, but can't find any of my existing .dbo connections and can't open any of the .mdf's from within Server Explorer (VS2010).  Any ideas? BTW the install went fine. And I have User Instance set to True in VS2010.

Error Installing SQL Server 2008 Express: '' is not a valid login or you do not have permission

I have tried installing SQL Server 2008 multiple times on my machine, and I always receive this error about 3/4 of the way through: '' is not a valid login or you do not have permission.

I have tried installing both SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools and SQL Server 2008 with Advanced Services, and they both fail the same way. I am trying to do a new stand-alone installation.

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition SP3.

Looking into the error, some forums say I have to install it from THE Administrator account, and not an account with administrator permissions; it also cannot be in Safe Mode, because then the Windows Installer won't work. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to login to the Administrator account. I can go to the home login screen, do ctrl+alt+del twice, and attempt to login to the Administrator account, but I receive this error: Unable to Log You on because of an Account Restriction.

Other forums say that in the Server Configuration section, all you have to do is provide the username and a strong password from an administrative account on the computer, and it doesn't have to be THE Administrator. Well, I did that, but for some reason it doesn't recognize my username and passw

SQL Server Express 2008 R2 and VS2010

Is anyone using this combination together?

I ask because I have posted previous questions without reply.  There seems to be a compatibility issue with the database in VS once opened up in R2 - any got any experience of this and how to work round it?

Cannot connect to SQL Server 2008 after Uninstalling VS2010 ultimate and installing VS2010 premium

I installed VS2010 Ultimate to test it out but had license for the VS2010 premium only.  After uninstalling ultimate and reinstalling VS2010 premium, my SQL Server 2008 now refuses to connect to my databases stating:

VS2010 Pro and SQL Server 2008 R2 Express

I have installed VS2010 Pro Trial (with the intention of buying VS2010 Pro). If I understand well, during the installation, SQL Server 2008 Express was also installed. I wonder if there are any clear instructions somewhere of how to upgrade from the (existing) SQL Server 2008 Express to SQL Server 2008 R2 Express edition. I have already spent hours researching and I am very confused with the various editions of SQL Server 2008! :( (It took me forever to realize that SQL Server 2008 Express with SP2 is NOT the same as SQL Server 2008 R2 Express since many of the links of the R2 site forward one to 2008 pages!!! :( )

And a side question... Is there a way (that I obviously haven't figured out yet!) to manage SQL Server Express (2008 plain or 2008 R2) from OUTSIDE VS? (I'm an old programmer from the VS6/MSDE era :P )

Thanks for your patience and any responses!

Installing SQL Server Express 2008 SP2

Is it wiser to uninstall SQL Server 2008 Express SP1 before installing SQL Server 2008 Express SP2, or to create a second instance along side Sp1?

Installing SQL Server Express 2008 R2 over SQL Server Express 2008

We recently purchased a server that has SQL Server Express 2008 installed. I would like to install SSE 2008 R2. Do I need to uninstall SSE 2008 before installing R2?

There is currently no data in the database(s). I believe it's bascially a fresh install from the factory.

Follow up. I would like to rename the computer. I assume I would want to do this before installing SSE 2008 R2.

question about installing sql server 2008 express with another server...

I am doing a self-study of databases and right now i'm playing with mssql server 2008 express edition.

One of my buddies asked me, if i'm going to install two mssql version. let us say i have mssql server 2005 already installed. If i install 2008, will it affect everything that was done in mssql 2005? also, if i uninstall one of it, will it affect each other? even in a small fraction of the settings?

P.S. sorry, i haven't tried and test it myself because i'm still looking for an older mssql server express edition and the question we have right now is only based on our curiosity. Advance thanks to anyone who can share their knowledge and experience in this matter.
