Is sharepoint good for storing relation data ?

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 15, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
Hi I would like to start discussion or find your opinion around "if sharepoint 2007 is a good platform to store relational data"? I found that quite often bussness doesn't feel that and push dev to create solution for relation data on top of sharepoint infrastructe. On the end we get huge customization with make everybody frustrated and those poor dev gays are blame for that. I believe that needs for relation data in particular solution draws clear line between apps build on top of Sharepoint or apps build with use of good old SQL database. Can I get your opinion around that ? I have three years expieriance with SharePoint and this is my personal opinion. If you could share your thoughts then for sure this would be helpfull for me and for other dev to show to the bussness why we somethimes suggesting them to go diffrent way. To build this discussion on some example let say that we need to build solution where: we have product table (with details around products) with contain two relation fields : user by country, owner by country we have country table (dictionary for countries), which contain field pointing to the region we have region table (dictionary for regions) we have few diffrents tables describing diffrent types of docs associated to products (like specyfication, safty documents, test documents) and let say there there goanna be a lot

Storing User Data

I'm trying to get the current logged in UserId Value, using this code

Protected Sub UserProfileDataSource_Selecting(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSourceSelectingEventArgs) Handles UserProfileDataSource.Selecting      ' Get a reference to the currently logged on user      Dim currentUser As MembershipUser = Membership.GetUser()      ' Determine the currently logged on user's UserId value      Dim currentUserId As Guid = CType(currentUser.ProviderUserKey, Guid)      ' Assign the currently logged on user's UserId to the @UserId parameter      e.Command.Parameters("@UserId").Value = currentUserId End Sub

But, I getting an error (NullReferenceException), I did set a url authorization on the page that i try to get the logged in user information, witch is info.aspx, and I made the login.aspx control to be redirected to the info.aspx after the login process, But the info.aspx  only shows me (access in denied), how can i make this page knows that i am already logged in?

What is a good example Dynamic Data application?

I'm giving a demonstration of Dynamic Data to a bunch of geeks in two weeks time. I'm looking for a simpe, but comprehensive data model to build the application on. I basically just want to register the model and demonstrate the application, as built (scaffolded) without any customisation, to start with, demonstrating list and detail/edit/insert views, and how table relations are handled.

I'd like to avoid one of the standards, i.e. the Customer->Order-OrderItem models, and try something that would be of interest to geeks. Maybe a Srum project tracker, an or a bug tracker, something like that.

Any suggestions please?

Programmatically retrieve data from the associated row in SharePoint and use the data to do math

I am trying to pull all of the associated data from a SharePoint list row to an InfoPath form repeating table.  I would like to select 1 unique value from the row and have the other fields auto-populate with the associated data from that row.

SharePoint Columns and also names of InfoPath fields 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.

I have a dropdown that is connected to column 1 and I would like to select 1 and have it populate the rest of the fields from that row.  I am currently doing this with information and C# code from:  http://www.bizsupportonline.net/infopath2007/sharepoint-list-retrieve-value-same-row-repeating-table-infopath

Regarding Business data catalog in SharePoint

Hi All,

I am using business data catalog to display the records present in the Active Directory based on the user selection of samAccountName. Since the number of records present in Active Directory are more than 3000 the user has to iterate through each page to get to a particular record. I want to add a kind of filter to my Definition file that user can search for a particular samAccountName from the list of samAccountName displayed in the business data list web part. I am using office server SDK by microsoft to generate the application definition file.

Any help regarding this will be appreciated.

How to create scrolling table for columns in a SharePoint Designer Data View

I have a fairly complex SharePoint Designer 2007 Data View they have added two more requirements.

1. Have the columns on the right side be able to scroll left to right as there is a large number of columns, while the first 3 columns on the left side stay locked in place.  This is only one list not two, and because of some other requirements I have it must remain to be just one list.

2. Then they also need to have scrolling up and down of the entire list with the headers locked in place.

The first requirement is more important than the second, but preferrably I need to do both.

I am new to XSL so not familar with the syntax. Is this something I can do on a custom Data View? Does anyone have any examples of how?

I have a drawing that show how it needs to look but I don't see an option here to upload a graphic.

So here is a link to my graphic example uploaded to my blog area: http://lindachapman.blogspot.com/  or just the image here: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_aB01ue__NvQ/TGL42MOvrGI/AAAAAAAAAA4/c3xP4uCy4BU/s1600/Scrolling.png

I failed to mention that 3/4 of the columns are HTML Calculated fields wh

Storing .EXE Files in SharePoint

New to SharePoint.  We just started migrating directories to our SharePoint server, and have encountered an issue storing .EXE files.  The error message says that it is denied by the administrator, however our IT team believes you can not store .EXE in SharePoint and that it is a system limitation.

Could someone please confirm whether or not there is a restriction for the storage of .EXE files in SharePoint?

If this is just an administrator setup issue, is there a doc that would direct us how to remore this setting?

Thank you,
