Migration / Export of Analysis Services 2000 database without affecting the source database

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 15, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server
Hi! I´m am currently initating a migration of a 300GB Analysis Services database containing approx 50+ cubes. My issue is that the database is somewhat critical, and I just want to get a couple of answers and feedback before i press Go. My plan is to use the "Analysis Services Migration Wizard" to migrate the database to a new (test environment) server. Q1: I just want to migrate the structure, the metadata, is this what the migration wizard does? I don´t have 300GB disk space at the test server to accomodate all the data. We will start off with just a subset Q2: Since the data is 300GB+, it might take a very long time using the migration wizard. If that is the case, can I make a copy of the database in analysis manager 2000 and paste it with a different name, and the migrate this, empty, database? Would you see any trouble with this approach? Any other thoughts on this, somewhat massive, migration project? How would you do it? The most important this is that the old database cannot be touched, since this would mean a reprocess of 300GB data, on a server from the nineties... Cheers,

Metadata: Create a Database Schema Repository with Meta Data Services in SQL Server 2000

SQL Server 2000 Meta Data Services is a repository technology that stores and manages metadata for SQL Server. Instead of building database schemas over and over, Meta Data Services allows you to freeze an entire schema for use in other projects. You can also use these schemas for training, testing, or debugging. In this article, the authors will review the various components of Meta Data Services and show how it can be programmed using a Visual Basic client, XML, and XSLT. They will also show you how to manage and manipulate your metadata by generating a simple database schema using a SQL Server repository.

migration MSDE 2000 SP3 database to SQL 2005 SP3: low performance on 2005 Express

I've detach MSDE 2000 SP3 database. I've attach into SQL 2005 Express SP3 and SQL 2005 Standard SP3. I've change compatibility level to 90. I've update statistics with EXEC sp_MSforeachtable @command1="UPDATE STATISTICS ? WITH FULLSCAN" The execution time of a TSQL into the same hardware (1 CPU, Quad Core) are: SQL 2005 Express SP3: 20" SQL 2005 Standard SP3: 0" The execution plan is different. Why?

Analysis Services 2008 R2 Deployment - very frequent database overwrites

When regularly deploying an Analysis Services project from Visual Studio / BIDS to Analysis Services 2008 R2, the database must frequently be overwritten - on almost any change. For example, after a successful deploy and process, a seemingly minor change is made (e.g. changing the FormatString property for an existing Measure, or Arrange Tables in the Data Source View), and the next deploy and process attempt triggers the message: The 'ZZZ' database on 'ZZZ' has changed since the last time the project was deployed. If you proceed with deployment, the database will be overwritten. Would you like to continue? With earlier versions of SQL, this only occurred rarely, e.g. when deploying to a stale server. The impact is that testing almost any change requires a complete re-process of the database. Is anyone else striking this issue?  Thanks Mike

How to connect Oracle Database in Microsoft Analysis Services

Hi All,

I am not able to connect oracle database from MS-Analysis Services.

All my Fact tables and Dimension tables are residing on Oracle
database. Both the Oracle database and MS Analysis Services are on the
same server.

I am working on the node and I was able to create the datasource using
"Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle " and the test connection also
succedded but while creating the cubes using the cube wizard it throws
error saying " Connection to the data source Failed".

Any one could help me in this regards.

What are the ways to connect the oracle DB from MS Analysis Services.

Is this problem becoz of any permission settings, how do I give permissions for the users.

Regarding the Analysis services database connection.

At present, I am facing a typical while processing a cube. In my package, I am processing all the dimensions and cubes through Analysis services task of the package. Now, I took the backup of the Current Analysis services database and restored it with other name and I changed the Analysis Services Connection in the package also. But, While running the pakcage, still the package is pointing to the old Analysis services databases only and it is updating all the dimensions and cubes of that database.

Please help me on this to proceed further.

Thank you!!

Granting access to a database (Analysis Services)

I need to grant access to the database (under Analysis Services).  I have a few questions.  Can I use an account that I created under the database engine (sql account) to have access to a database under the Analysis services?

I did some reading on MS below.  It seems to show only a domain account access under membership in Role.

Please advice.

Export Visio Database Table Names to Excel

If you use the Enterprise Architect edition of Microsoft Visio for data modeling regularly, then there is a good chance that at some point you've wanted to export just the table names into Excel. You might want to do this to map logical ERD entities to physical data model tables, track project status by entity, or track overlap between database versions.

Database Export Wizard for ASP.net and SQL Server

From a developer's perspective, once a database's schema has been defined and the tables, stored procedures, and other database objects have been created, it can be forgotten, abstracted away into the data access layer of the application's architecture.

OLAP: Build an OLAP Reporting App in ASP.NET Using SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services and Office XP

Many organizations analyze their business-critical data using Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) technology. OLAP-based data mining provides a way to query multidimensional data sets and drill down into the data to find patterns. ASP.NET and the Microsoft Office Web Components (OWC) enable Web-based OLAP reporting. The OWC controls include PivotTable and Chart components that can be embedded in a Web page and scripted by programmers. In this article, the authors build a Web-based OLAP reporting app using ASP.NET, OWC, and SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services to illustrate the process.

MDW Disk Usage for Database Report Error - A data source has not been supplied for the data source D

Hello, On the MDW Disk Usage Collection Set report, I get the following error when I click on a database hyperlink. A data source has not been supplied for the data source DS_TraceEvents SQL profiler shows the following SQL statements are executed (I've replaced the database name with databaseX) 1. exec sp_executesql N'SELECT dtb.name AS [Name] FROM master.sys.databases AS dtb WHERE (dtb.name=@_msparam_0)',N'@_msparam_0 nvarchar(4000)',@_msparam_0=N'databaseX' this returns zero rows as databaseX does not exist on my MDW central server, but is a database on a target server (i.e. one that is being monitored and uploaded into the MDW central server). 2. USE [datatbaseX] this produces the following error: Msg 911, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Database 'databaseX' does not exist. Make sure that the name is entered correctly. why is the report looking for the database on my server? thanks Jag Environment: MDW (Management Data Warehouse) on SQL 2008 R2

Unable to install SP3 on SQL 2005 due to Database Services language being blank

Hi all,   I have an issue that requires me to upgrade to a later SP (currently on RTM), but when I try to install SP3 Database Services cannot be ticked. Upon inspection I see that its reporting "This update requires language ENU.  The language for this product instance MSSQLSERVER is . Download the upadte for langage .", when I check teh Language field to the right it is blank, other parts however are fine and can be upgraded. Can you advise please as I don't know how to manually set the language (which is reported inside SQL itself as English (United Kingdom)) and I cannot un/reinstall. Thanks, John
