General Setup Question regarding Ssytem.XML assembly

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 15, 2010    Points: 0   Category :.NET Framework
Hello,I have a solution running perfectly well on one machine (or actually quite a few machines).  All the code is in source safe and I am trying to set up a new machine with the solution but keep getting the following build errors:'XName' is ambiguous in the namespace 'System.Xml.Linq'. InternalXmlHelper.vb 'XNamespace' is ambiguous in the namespace 'System.Xml.Linq'. InternalXmlHelper.vb 'XElement'is ambiguous in the namespace 'System.Xml.Linq'. InternalXmlHelper.vb 'XAttribute' is ambiguous in the namespace 'System.Xml.Linq'. InternalXmlHelper.vb and so on...The main difference that I noticed was that on the machines where the application builds, in the property page of the project whgere the build erros are occurring I check the reference list and I see a reference to the System.XML assembly (GAC,  However in the machine with the build errors, even when I try to add a reference to the System.XML assembly I get no error messages, but afterr adding the assembly does NOT appear in the reference list.In addition I have verified that I am able to create a new web application without any build or runtime errors on the machine experiencing these issues.Any feedback would be greatly appreicated.Thanks.

clr assembly in sql server - working directory? and exception question

Hello, I have a small assembly in sql server 2008... it's pretty simple, but in the very rare circumstance that it may throw an exception I am catching it and writting to a log file. something like: using (StreamWriter sr = new StreamWriter(@".\ErrorLog.txt", true)) { sr.WriteLine("{0:G} ===> {1}", DateTime.Now, ex.Message); } I believe that should write the file to the working directory... 1. what would the working directory be for sql server 2008? the binn directory? 2. what would happen if a clr assembly added to sql server throws an exception that is not handled by your clr code?

General Controller to View logic question

Hello, I am currently learning the MVC2 Framework and I have a brief question in terms of my logic and if their are any flaws in it. I created a basic example in a couple of minutes that demonstrates the way I think about it. public ViewResult Index() { return View(); } public ViewResult Cookies() { return View(new Cookie()); } public ViewResult CookiesInput(Cookie cookie) { return View(cookie); }<asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" runat="server"> <h2>I really like cookies</h2> Would you like a cookie? <% using (Html.BeginForm("Cookies", "Example")) { %> <p><input type="submit" value="Yes" /></p> <% } %> </asp:Content> <asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" runat="server"> <h2>Cookies</h2> <% using (Html.BeginForm("CookiesInput", "Example")) { %> <%= Html.EditorForModel() %> <p><input type="submit" value="Gimme" /></p> <% } %> </asp:Content><asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainConten

General question steps to configure mysites in SharePoint 2010

I am trying to configure the mysite web application, so I have created a DNS record "mysite" and created a web application for the mysite and created a mysite host site collection on it. Now I have read somewhere that u have to create managed paths for the profile and the mysite, which actually corresponds with the name of the DNS record/mysite webapp. For some reason when i am opening the mysite, i get a url something like http://my/my. What am i doing wrong? Can somebody just give me a step by step approach on how to configure Mysites in MOSS 2010?I am a SharePoint Infrastructure Engineer, focussed on Administration and Installation of SharePoint Server environments.

General Question About Remembering Property Values Between Postbacks

Here are examples of two different ways I've found to story Property values between postbacks:    private bool Initialized    {      get      {        return Convert.ToBoolean(this.Attributes["Initialized"]);      }      set      {        this.Attributes["Initialized"] = value.ToString();      }    }    private int DataTableRowIndex    {      get      {        return (int)ViewState["DataTableRowIndex"];      }      set      {        ViewState["DataTableRowIndex"] = value;      }    }I'd appreciate any comments about differences between these two approaches [Attributes vs. ViewState].  Is one better or worse?Robert

Assembly versioning best practice question wrt alpha, beta, etc

We'd like to employ some best practices with respect to versioning in our assemblies.  Since I'm coming from a Java+Maven+OSGi background, I'll share its way of doing versioning. Versioning in Java is arbitrary; there are no platform-dictated schemes.  However, for quite some time now, versions have the typical form major.minor.revision[.qualifier] where major & minor are pretty self-explanatory, revision is used to indicate very minor updates like bug fixes/hot fixes, etc, and qualifier is used at the publisher's convenience.  Almost always, the major, minor & revision elements are numeric values, but they don't have to be.  Ordering is as you might expect:  major versions are the most signficant element and are compared by the string's order unless their all numeric, in which case they're compared numerically, then minor, then revision, then qualifier, if present.  So, to give an example of the versioning scheme that a newly created library might go through, consider the following versions with descriptions: 1.0.0.A1 -- alpha 1 1.0.0.A2 -- alpha 2 1.0.0.B1 -- beta 1 1.0.0.M1 -- milestone 1 1.0.0.M2 -- milestone 2 1.0.0.RC1 -- release candidate 1 1.0.0.RC2 -- release candidate 2 1.0.0.RELEASE -- golden release to manufacturing, aka "official" release Notice that the version string for the version considered gol

Mixing Assembly Runtime Versions Question

I'm building an application targeted at the .NET Framework 4 and want to use the Logging Application Block and notice that the 5.0.414.0 version installed by the MSI is targeted at the 2.0.50727 runtime.  If this 2.0 version of the Logging Application Block is used, are there any performance problems or other issues which would suggest that I install the Logging Application Block source code and compile it targeted at .NET Framework 4 and use that DLL??

General question: Using the VS Designer vs. the Source Code

I just finished Sams Teach Yourself ASP.Net in 24 Hours. I am now going through the Data tutorials here. I am a beginner at ASP.Net. One thing that I am having a little bit of trouble with is the idea that I am using the Designer in Visual Studio for just about everything except for a few code tweaks. I used to do a lot of HTML, JavaScript and CSS. I even did some programming (PowerBuilder). So, I am used to writing/typing code instead of using a Designer. (I always liked writing web pages in a text editor.) When I look at the code generated by the Designer in Visual Studio, I can understand what is going on there. But, to sit down and write that code instead of using the Designer to me seems impossible. There is just so much there. From what I understand, ASP.Net and Visual Studio were created to help streamline the code writing process. I suppose if I was used to writing VB code to create applications I might look at this from a different angle. But, I am learning ASP.Net using the VS Designer. Any comments or suggestions from experienced coders? I really don't want to have a battle between people who use the Designer and the Source Code editor. I am just hoping for some comments that will help newbies. Thanks.

SharePoint initial site hierarchy setup question

Hello, I thought this question would be a setup/configuration/operation question, any thoughts or advices will be greatly appreciated!!

So we would like to stand up couple of team sites (3-4 total) for these different programs, on our enterprise SharePoint environment which is MOSS 2007. Usually

what happens with our enterprise SP is that we request a SP site by filling out a form and they just give us a site collection with Site Owner level permissions.

What would be the reasons I would want to have all these sites under a Site collection named "Programs" and have each sites as sub-sites VS. have 4 different site

collections for each of the programs?

I understand it depends on the situation, and I thought it would be better if we would have separate site collections...please correct me if i'm wrong.

These programs are unrelated so there would be no need for a centralized navigation with a top-level page, no need for a search across all 4 program sites, and we

would actually like to have these in separate contentDBs to do backups. So I thought it would be best to just have these as separate site collections, and just

have like a link to different site collections in case users want to go to other program sites... I just couldn't think of any reasons to have

Newbie Question: Configuring WCF Service - Named Pipes Only for PubSub setup

I am refactoring an existing application and want to learn / move forward with WCF services contained within a Windows Service.  I have several WCF services that will only connect through Named Pipes - the client applications will receive information through callbacks - what is the proper way to keep the channel open - events may not occur for hours.  Is there a way to keep the session connection open until the clients have disconnected?

General Question

I'm wondering why I never see an object like this:

using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Text;

namespace TestConsole
    class TestClass2
        public TestClass2()
            A = "test";
            B = "test2";
            C = "test3";
            D = C;

        public string A

        public string B

        public string C

        public string D

Instead of something like this:

using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Text;

namespace TestConsole
    class TestClass
        public string a;
        private string b;
        private string c;
        private string d ;

        public TestClass()
            a = "test";
            b = "chest";
            c = "chief";
            d = "test2";

How to setup a Mobile Browser Emulator in Windows Mobile 6:

In the following tutorial, I cover the process of Setting up Windows Mobile 6 for Mobile Browser Emulation using the Microsoft Device Emulator. This enables a user to experience Windows Mobile 6 on a PC via Emulation without even owning a Windows Mobile 6 product. It can be a great way to test drive Windows Mobile 6 before purchasing a product with it installed. In our case, it allowed us to Emulate Windows Mobile Browsing so that we could optimize our sites for the Mobile viewing audience. Installation and Emulation is simple and fairly straight forward.

Some basic MVC question

  1. In regular asp net I can run (debug) the application but I can either "view in browser" that gives me the option to view the application and write code on same time.

In MVC I can't find this option.

  1. What is the basic DATA MODEL for working with SQL DB.

I mean with no any framework (entity framework, Sub sonic, Link to SQL etc')

I look for basic application that works with data but with no fw.

  1. What is the popular DB framework that working with data.
  2.  I am looking on  mvc series

Web Site to Web Application Question

I've been building web sites and for my next project I will be creating a web application.  I use a 'BasePage' class in all my projects but, since web applications do not contain the 'App_Code' folder, what is the best place/practice for the 'BasePage' class?
