Document is read-only in SharePoint, but user sees "check out" option in Office 2007 / Word / Excel

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 15, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
I am finding that when there is a document library in SharePoint with checkin/checkout required, if a user with read-only ("Visitor") permissions opens a document from that library, the document will open as read-only in Word, Excel, etc., but the user will see the "Server Document" bar with the message "To modify this document, you must check it out" and the "check out" button.  When the user tries to check the document out, they are asked to authenticate, and then receive the error "Cannot perform this operation.  The file has been deleted or someone else has it checked out."    How is it possible to prevent a user with read-only rights in SharePoint from seeing the "Check out" option in Word or Excel?

Advanced Basics: Setting Word Document Properties the Office 2007 Way

The last time I wrote this column (March 2006), I shared an application that allows you to update all the Microsoft® Word documents in a folder and its subfolders. Each time the application finds a document in the specified path, it updates the document properties to match those you specified in the application.

Sharepoint 2007 Document Search and Highlight in Office 2007 and PDF

We will be implementing Document Search (DOC, DOCX, PDF, TIFF, PPT, PPTX, XLS, XLSX) for one of our customers. We were evaluating a few MOSS 2007 based solutions, and happened to visit your site.  What we intend to achieve are the following functionalities:

a.       User should be able to search through 1000s of documents which are in a Sharepoint Document Library

b.      The documents could be in English, International Languages.

c.       Each document is 70-100 pages, and therefore it is important that the Search Results show the relevant pages on which the Search Text appears (Get Highlighted) within each document . Clicking on the link will take the user to the right page.

d.      The additional requirement is Synonym search. So, I can search for

Converting Word Documents library to PDF document library in SharePoint Server 2007

My project requires me to create an event reciever such that when a word file is added to one library the same content pdf file should be added to other library also when a word file is updated, edited or checked in the respective pdf file in other document library should be replaced by a new pdf file with the edited word content . Can we do this in Sharepoint 2007 I have seen this can be done in Sharepoint 2010 http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff181518.aspx

"Document not Saved" in Excel 2007 - using Windows XP Pro and Office 2007 Pro

Hello folks,   I am having an issue with all of my Excel documents saving from the network drive.  Whether I open the document then "save as" 97- 2003 or just do a straight "save" it will always come up as "Document not saved".  I open some Word files and get a different error, "There has been a network or file permission error.  The network connection may be lost (the drive contents here)"  Now I am online and can do emails and open other documents from the network so I know my network connection is not lost.  I work right off the LAN and not wireless.   I did take the file in both Excel and Word and copy them to the local drive then try the open / save as and it will work great like that no problem.  Although this is a "work around" is there something I am missing?  Our corporation has many new machines running Windows XP Pro along with Office 2007 Pro and this was the first I had seen this problem with.  This is a laptop, but again others work fine ( that I know of)   Thanks, Mark

Office 2007 Documents Open in Read-Only when Opening them from a WSS 2.0 Document Library

Hi, When any of our Windows 7 Pro computers that run Office 2007 Pro attempt to open a Word document that resides in a WSS 2.0 document library by using the drop down menu and selecting "Edit with MS Word", the documents open in read-only.  Our work-around is to save the document locally, modify it, and then save it back to the document library. We have some Windows XP and Vista systems that run Office 2007 and they are fine and can simply edit the document and save it.  We also have a handful of pc's that run Office 2003 and they are not having any issues either. Things I've tried: Office 2007 Repair - no luck Office Reinstall - no luck Some registry mod HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12\Internet\OpenDocumentReadWrite=1 (noted on a MSKB article) - no luck and after re-reading the article it clearly states that this will not address content hosted on WSS or SPS sites Clearing IE temp files, resttting IE to defaults - no luck Once again, this only seems to happen to Win7Pro pc's that run Office 2007.  Honestly, I can't tell if IE8 has anything to do with this. Any thoughts or help would be extrememly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Currency and number column error with office 2007 document formats in SharePoint 2010 library

Hi there,

The following error occurred within a SharePoint 2010 document library:

As I tried to test out the new SharePoint 2010 environment I changed the metadata from a few documents within a document library. I noticed that the data from the currency und number field was incorrect from a few documents. The numbers looked like that the decimal separator were ignored. For an example: 123.456,78 was saved as 12.345.678.

At first I thought it could be a language incompabilty but if that would be the case: Why would there be other documents which show the correct number?

I created another document library to recreate this error. And there I noticed the real reason: Every time I changed these fields from a document which was saved in the office 2007 format the error occurred. The metadata from the documents in the office 2003 format were correct.

Has anyone a similar problem or got an idea how to solve this problem?

SharePoint 2007 Content Deployment Word Document URLs being changed

We created an application that leverages on SPExport and SPImport.

We noticed that when we export/import site, the links on the word documents pointing to same application on the target site seems to get truncated url, the url parameters (ie ?param1=a&param2=b) are truncated.

also the host header seems to get updated ie(http://my.shop.com/path1/path2 turns to like (http://hostheader/path1/path2) which is causing broken links.

need some help/advice/ suggestion.

Thanks a lot

Long delay opening Word documents from SharePoint 2007 with Office 2010

The first time a document is opened it's fine, opens in just a few seconds.

Subsequently, there is a long delay (about 20 seconds) in the "Contacting server for information..." step.

This happens to all users and all documents, each one will open fast the first time then slowly the second and subsequent times (until, we think, the app pool is recycled - there is no schedules iisreset/reboot).

This does not happen when using Office 2007.

IE6 and 7 exhibit the same behaviour.

Blocking Edit Document for Read only users in SharePoint 2007

I'm trying to create a group in one of my sites that is Read only - truly read only.  Seems no matter what I do, the users can click on Edit Document, check out, check in, and the document is changed.  It doesn't show as changed in the Modified or Modified By columns, but the changes I make to test are there.  How do I create a group that can open a document, but can NOT check it out, can NOT Edit Document, and then check it back in?

SharePoint 2007 - Opening an office document in portal demands authentication

Hi there,

Environemnt:  SharePoint 2007, SQL Server 2005

In order to get into Intranet portal it is required to enter USERNAME, PASSWORD [WINDOWS AUTHENTICATION]. That has been working fine for few years.

Now when the office document is opened it demands authentication, requiring the end user to enter username and pasword again. Can this be reverted? Once the credentials are entered first time to get into Intranet portal it should allow office documents to be opened without demanding authentication?

To simplyfy I would like to avoid the second time authentication while opending office document from SharePoint portal.

Help is appreciated.

Unable to edit and check out document in Sharepoint 2007

I am unable to edit document in SharePoint, and hit error with a message “The document could not be opened for editing. A Windows SharePoint Services compatible application could not be found to edit the document”.

Do you have any idea on these issues? As in the development server, I am able to check out and edit documents.

All documents open as Read Only in Office 2010 from SharePoint 2007

I have recently installed Office 2010 and now when I select "Edit in Microsoft Word" from a SharePoint document library, the document will only open as Read Only.  I am running SharePoint 2007 SP1, I have admin rights to the workstation, server, sharepoint list and document.

I have tried the registry entry " OpenDocumentsReadWriteWhileBrowsing = 1 " but that has made no difference.  I have also run webfldrs.msi with no effect.  The website is a trusted site and I have switched off all of the protected view options.

Any help welcome!

Word 2007 properties not syncronizing with the SharePoint 2007 document library

Hi everyone.

Anyone ever had trouble with document properties that does not syncronize between a Word 2007 document and the SharePoint library where it is stored?

I have a SharePoint library, that contains two content types. When I upload a pdf file, and set the property values everything is perfect. When I create a Word document and set the Properties using the DIP, the values are stored in the Word document (I see them in the DIP, inside the word xml files and in the fileds in the document where they are displayed (using quickparts)), but not transfered to SharePoint when I save the document to the library.

If I upload a Word document to the library, I am able to choose content type and set all the property values. But when I open the document for editing, all the property values in the DIP are empty. The DIP do show the correct property fields for that content type.

After creating new libraries, content types and creating, transfering and uploading files all day, I have not been able to locate what is causing this issue.

My users have been using this library for several months and use the documents on a daily basis, and this problem just got raised. My users are feeling scared that they have to recreate their library or site (which will involve manually updating all the document properties ). I hope someone are able to
