For the 2008 Imagine Cup, students have been challenged to use technology to enable a sustainable environment. Finalists in the U.S. competition recently presented their solutions in Los Angeles, and MSDN Magazine was there to see the innovative ideas participants have come up with.

MSSQL 2008 R2: Change Server Collation Steps, with user DBs already of desired collation

On the default instance of SQL Server 2008 R2, I want to change the server collation from the usual US default SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS to an application vendor's required collation, Latin1_General_BIN.  I understand that changing the server collation is essentially the same as changing the collation of databases master and model -- is that a fair statement? But my main question is, since there are user databases on the server that I would like to preserve, can I not simply detatch the user DBs prior to performing the server collation change, and then reattach?  The database collation of the user databases is already set to Latin1_General_BIN.  This article, Setting and Changing the Server Collation, at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179254.aspx says that to preserve the user databases, I should script all DB objects out, and bulk-copy all data out, because the DBs will have to be recreated and repopulated.  Can someone explain why I ought not simply detach and reattach the user DBs, given that they are already of the desired collation (i.e., the same collation that I will be changing the server collation to)? Your help much appreciated. -Tom

How to change SQL server 2008 collate after installation

Hi, On windows sever 2008 I've installed SQL server 2008 RC0.At the time of installation, I'd specified the collation as LATIN1_GENERAL_BIN, and now I want to change this collation to LATIN1_GENERAL_CI_AS.Please note that I don't want to change the collation of specific db but need to change the sql server 2008 server's settings. How to accomplish this requirement with minimum efforts? Thanks

Can I change the location SSRS 2008 uses for custom assemblies?

According to all the documentation or articles I've read, in order for an SSRS 2008 report to use a custom assembly the DLL must be copied to 1) For local development on my box:  C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\PublicAssemblies 2) For server deployment: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS10.MSSQLSERVER2008\Reporting Services\ReportServer\bin  I've got this all working just fine. However, I have a need to put this DLL file in a different location.  Is this possible?  Is there a way to reconfigure the server installation so that it looks for custom assemblies in a different location?  Is there something I can do in the SSRS report itself to force it to look for the custom assembly in a different location?

Cannot change the collation sequence of a Database in SQL Server 2008 R2

I tried two steps below separately: restricted user ran for 30 minutes then I stopped the execution; They obviously could not run simultaneously. I only want to operate at the database and not the server level. Our other key db is already in the desired collation. We'd like to have equijoins work on tables with the same collation sequences, and not have to use ETL or individual ALTERs for each table involved.

Second point: is CP1 below a 2000 only collation? That appears to be a patently false assumption in another forum posting. It appears to be a valid 2008 R2 collation is the point.

COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS ;

Unable to change autogrowth properties of SQL Server 2008 data and log files

I have used the GUI and the CLI to attempt to change SQL Server 2008 log file autogrowth property all to NO avail. In other words, there are NO error messages of any kind, indeed the CLI reports that the command completed successfully. But re-examining the database properties shows that NO change was effected.

For the CLI command, I have used the following with dots filled in for my database and logfile:

Why doesn't this work? How to make it work?

Any way to change the icon to toggle the parameter panel in SSRS 2008 R2?

Is there any way I can change the icon that the HTML viewer in SSRS 2008 R2 uses to toggle the parameter panel?

I have users telling me it is too small and they want it bigger.  When I look at the page with the IE developer toolbar, the icon looks like it is being pulled from a resource inside ReportViewerWebControl.axd,

CE Republishers (or How Can One Change Republisher Ranges through SQL Server 2008)

My company uses mobile devices to assist in inventory tracking across multiple bases around the world.  Right now, our main base is the primary Publisher for data to the other 3 servers, and at each secondary base we have a single merge publication that pushes/pulls data from the mobile devices.  However, there's one replicated article that always throws the 20660 error, regardless of the publisher range/subscriber ranges set.  What can allow this single article to be replicated to the mobile devices as well?

SSRS 2008 dynamic change to report parameter properties

I'm running SSRS 2008, and I'm wondering if it is possible to change a report parameter property based on user input in another report parameter.  What I need to do is to make report parameter #2 a required parameter if a specific value is selected in parameter #1.  Parameter #2 should be optional under all other scenario.

Thanks in advance.

SSRS 2008 Change configuration file

Hi All,

We are having rdl files which were created on BIDS 2005 and delpoyed to SSRS 2005 now we have upgrade our Report Manager from 2005 and 2008, most of the report sends email subscriptions to our end-users with an attachment file to export version as "EXCEL".

Everything was working fine and perfectly as expected with SSRS 2005, but after our upgrade to 2008 we are receiving error as below under EXCEL Files:-

into the cell(s) of the Excel spreadsheet.

To resolve this issue we change on the format code of text boxes under our rdl files from "#0" to "N0", and everthing was resolved successfully with the export version of the EXCEL.

So my question is, we have more than 1000 of rdl files which sends an email subscriptions to our end-users so is their any way were we can change above mentioned format code to Reporting Services Configuration file instead of changing all the rdl files individually.

One change at the Configuration is much better than changing 1000 of rdl files!!! Isn't it?

Please help me out?

Change in Windows Auth between SQL 2005 and SQL 2008, bug?

Since upgrading some clients to SQL 2008 I am running into a problem with laptops that are members of a domain and using Windows Authentication while not connected to the domain.

The users are receiving errors:

The Local Security Authority cannot be contacted
Cannot generate SSPI context

I see many write ups on this in the SQL Forums and other places on the Internet.

My question is, is this a bug? If I use osql.exe as a test there is a distinct difference between SQL 2008 and SQL 2005.

I can use osql.exe from 90\tools\binn (SQL 2005) with the following command while not connected to the domain and it connects to either my SQL 2005 or 2008 instance.

osql -E -S <server>\<instance>

However, the exact same command using osql.exe from 100\tools\binn (SQL 2008) fails and generates the errors above.

My application is receiving the same error. It is using a DSN-less ODBC connection.

This is running XP SP3 and SQL 2008 Express SP1.

I'm trying to determine if this is a bug that may be fixed or if it is just life now and I need to adjust.

Process Update does not reflect change in case of dimension member in SSAS 2008.

Process Update does not reflect change in case of dimension member in SSAS 2008. We can replicated this issue in Adventure Works 2008 with below steps.

1.  Customer Name Aaron Allen is in Title case both in Adventure Works SQL 2008 Data Mart as well as in SSAS 2008.

2.  Change Customer Name Aaron Allen to Upper case in Adventure Works SQL Data Mart.
