Advanced Basics: Setting Word Document Properties the Office 2007 Way

The last time I wrote this column (March 2006), I shared an application that allows you to update all the Microsoft® Word documents in a folder and its subfolders. Each time the application finds a document in the specified path, it updates the document properties to match those you specified in the application.

Office XP: New Toolkit Lets You Share Information Between Office Documents and Web Services

The Office XP Web Services Toolkit makes it possible to build applications that gather information and trigger transactions through various Web Services. The toolkit allows you to easily discover Web Services remotely. It also includes the Web Service Reference Tool, which lets you call a Web Service from inside an Office application. This article shows how toolkit-generated code can be used to access simple, as well as complex, Web Services. The author steps through the auto-generated code to explain the classes that collect parameters, the schema to format the request/response, and the actual operations of the Web Service.

How can I prioritise search results to show where document metadata has a hit first and then where t

When my users run a search against a site with a bunch of document libraries they will often search for terms that are in the title of the doc, if they do know the title they will put that in. What I would like to do is have the results ordered such that if any hits are on the document metadata (eg Title) then they are presented first and any results that are from hits on the content of the documents are presented later.

So, if they get the title spot on in their search query that document will appear first .... if they don't get it right then the likelyhood is that the title is something like what they entered so similar titled docs are presented first and then those with matching content ....

How can I achieve this?

Sharepoint 2007 Document Search and Highlight in Office 2007 and PDF

We will be implementing Document Search (DOC, DOCX, PDF, TIFF, PPT, PPTX, XLS, XLSX) for one of our customers. We were evaluating a few MOSS 2007 based solutions, and happened to visit your site.  What we intend to achieve are the following functionalities:

a.       User should be able to search through 1000s of documents which are in a Sharepoint Document Library

b.      The documents could be in English, International Languages.

c.       Each document is 70-100 pages, and therefore it is important that the Search Results show the relevant pages on which the Search Text appears (Get Highlighted) within each document . Clicking on the link will take the user to the right page.

d.      The additional requirement is Synonym search. So, I can search for

BDC + Document Information Panel Javascript Error

I hope someone here can shed some light on this one...

We have a document library configured with a few content types and document information panels for those items. Also on this list we have a BDC column setup to pull client names from MS CRM. This works fine on the list itself, however, in Word 2007 - the picker does not show up in the DIP, so we cannot easily select clients without knowing the name (first issue).

Secondly, if we enter in a client name, or partial, we recieve the following error:

"There was an error in the validation code" - with the following details:
Document Information Panel cannot complete this action, because of an error
in the form's code.
The following error occurred:

Object required
FileTongue Tiedcript.js

Any help is appreciated!

How to write an event to manage permissions on a document while uploading, depending on custom field

I am trying to find a solution to manage permissions on a document, while uploading it into a document library. This event has to be fired if a custom field is populated (it's a check box field).

How to write an event for this, i tried writing ItemAdded event, but this is getting fired as soon as a document is uploaded, before coming to the page, where we populate all the fields and hit check in.

can i capture Check-in event.

Please advise.

Video: Microsoft Office 2010 Development Tools

Visual Studio 2010, SharePoint Designer 2010, InfoPath 2010, and Access 2010 are tools a developer can use to build solutions for Office and SharePoint 2010. This video provides an introduction to these tools and how they have been greatly enhanced to support solution development. (Length: 4:38)

SharePoint makes Office Document custom fields unreadable

We're using WSS 3.0SP2 with a Document Library that has document-level columns (fields) added. The columns (fields) are defined as single-line text; nothing fancy. In SharePoint we can set the field values no problem. When we pull the documents back out of SharePoint to the file systsem, and look at the Custom Fields, the values are unreadable gibberish. They look like graphics lines and boxes and the Type is set to Unknown.

Any ideas why this is happening and how to fix it?

Document Information Panel problem with Infopath

Hi, I have created a custom document content type that uses a specified word template deployed by a feature for a sharepoint site collection. The Content Type is defined in site collection level i have add a column also defined as a site column called "Abstract", and I added this column to my content type. Now I want to create a custom DIP using Infopath, when infopath is launched it maps all column from this content type. The problem that the "Abstract" column wich is defined as rich text and optional column is not mapped correctly Infopath show that field as a required field and can not be blank. When i added this content type to a document library and try to create a new document i have an error "Document Information Panel cannot create.. problem on the schema with Abstract field". When i try to modify the xsn file at the document library level and republish the form it works but when i do it in the site collection level it's impossible to map the field properly. Any suggestions about what might be causing this problem or how to fix it would be greatly appreciated. ABT

Updating a non MS Office document

Hi, We are using SP2007 My understanding that the only way to update a non Office file (eg .txt) without using My Network Places in a SharePoint document library is to do the following: check out the document save the document locally  upload the document as a new version check in the document Is this correct? If so ... if a user has full control on a given document but only read only access to the library it sits in, doesn't it mean they will not be able to update the document (without using My Network Places) as they don't have access to the libraries Upload option? We are trying to avoid using the My Network places due to using thousands of site collections across our organisation ie trying to find a specific library is hard to do and is a poor user experience.   Regards, Simon

How to maximize use of managed metadata in the document library?

We are creating new Intranet portal based on SharePont 2010 and we have document library with 100-200 documents. Old Intranet is based on previous version of SharePoint. End-users did not like the usability of the document library as it was hierarchical. Users needed to know, which was the folders and its subfolder to find out where is the document. We are currently investigating if we can solve this problem by using managed metadata. We know how to define term set and how to give metadata to the document, but we don't know what is the most usable way to utilizem them in the document library. Let say that end-user would like to see all documents that has managed metadata "User Guide". How to configure document library so that users see only those documents. Not all our users are skilled and we have to provide very intuitive way to search relavant documents to them. Some predefined metadata dropdown would be great.Kenny_I

Is there a way to parse information in a word document and store them on a list (MOSS2007)? (Without

My current project requires me to parse through a Word document with tables that simulate a form. However Infopath isn't an available rescource for me. For example I'm to bring all information in the notes cell onto a list in sharepoint. Ultimately i'll be using a view to display that list through a webpart on a dashboard like interface on a sharepoint page. Is this possible? or is Info Path really the only way to go about this?

Is it possible to define metadata at Office 2007/2010 when saving to the SharePoint 2010 library

I have succesfully saved Excel 2007 document  to the document library. I wonder if it is possible to define meta data with client? Otherwiser end-user need to anyway open the SharPoint library and add metadata information there.  Example metadata is like "category".   Kenny_I
