Can I use class members for data or do I need to use Variable?

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 14, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Windows Application
I have a class derived from CodeActivity that creates some objects in its constructor which will be used by Execute. These objects are exposed as properties so I can fake them for unit tests. In a code review a colleague suggested that I might need to make all of those objects Variable<T> "for them to play nicely in WF (with all the threading etc. going on)", but wasn't sure on that. Do I need to make these Variable<T>? If not, when would I want to use Variable<T> in a CodeActivity?

Unable to Create Object Variable for Linq Data Class

For some unknown reason I suddenly am unable to create an object variable for a Linq Data Class. If I create a new project and try the process again with the same database everything works as advertized.

The code I am using is Dim db As New RoggDataContext  which gives me an error on the object variable "db": Overload resolution failed because no accessibility 'NEW'  accepts this number of arguments.

I have looked inside every file in the Web Project like the web config to check the connection string, gobal, and designer.vb looking for any errors whit no JOY.  I also tried to create a new form and code behind with a button and received the same error.

This is mind blowing because as I already stated, I can create a new Web Site and the problem goes away.

Any help is appreciated!

class contains non-dependency-property data members that are DependencyObject objects, you must also

I was reading the article Freezable Objects Overviewand came acrosee the statement

"If  your class contains non-dependency-property data members that are DependencyObject objects, you must also call the OnFreezablePropertyChanged method each time you change on of their values, even if you're setting the member to null. "

I quite do not understand the part about non-dependency-property data members that are DependencyObject objects. Can some one explain exactly what this means? If a data member is derived from the DependencyObject  class how then can the data member be a non dependency property?

I am also trying to locate some source code / project that overrides the OnFreezablePropertyChanged method, and have yet to find any on the interenet.

If anyone know whe

How to retrieve data from SqlDataSource and pass to a variable?

Hi there,

I have a page in my website where there is very little code-behind. I only have two lines of code in Page_Load() and the rest of the code is declarative ASP.NET code. I have a FormView control which uses a SqlDataSource to get some order information. The SqlDataSource calls a stored procedure called usp_GetOrderDetails, here's the code for the SqlDataSource:

    <asp:SqlDataSource ID="sdsFormOrderDetails" runat="server"
ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ForexDB %>"
ProviderName="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ForexDB.ProviderName %>"
SelectCommand="usp_GetOrderDetails" SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure"
UpdateCommand="usp_UpdateOrder" UpdateCommandType="StoredProcedure"
<asp:ControlParameter Name="orderId" ControlID="grdOrders" PropertyName="SelectedDataKey.Value" />
<asp:ControlParameter Name="orderId" ControlID="frmOrderDetails" PropertyName="SelectedValue" />

Zip Your Data: Using the Zip Classes in the J# Class Libraries to Compress Files and Data with C#

Zip compression lets you save space and network bandwidth when storing files or sending them over the wire. In addition, you don't lose the directory structure of folders you Zip, which makes it a pretty useful compression scheme. The C# language doesn't have any classes that let you manipulate Zip files, but since .NET-targeted languages can share class implementations, and J# exposes classes in the java.util.zip namespace, you can get to those classes in your C# code. This article explains how to use the Microsoft J# class libraries to create an application in C# that compresses and decompresses Zip files. It also shows other unique parts of the J# runtime you can use from any .NET-compliant language to save some coding.

Building a Custom Data Grid: Performing Ad Hoc Web Reporting with a VBScript 5.0 Class Object

A flexible, customizable grid for displaying data is a useful tool for ASP developers. It allows Web visitors to customize their view of your data. This article takes the data grid presented in "Ad Hoc Web Reporting with ADO 2.0" by John Papa and Charles Caison (MIND, December 1998) and adds handy features such as a finds feature that supports multiple finds and a mode for adding and editing records. This version also improves response time by allowing asynchronous record download and it componentizes the code so it can be used as a standalone VBScript class object that can be reused in other pages.

All data in class properties disappear across WCF service

Hi, I have a class that i share betwee silverlight client and wcf service. I populate properties of the class with real data from the client, to be used in the server. I use debugger to step through the code when the call gets to the server, all the data ara gone and are replaced with null. All DateTime value change to 1/1/1001. But if pass primitive types such as int, string, no problem. This is happening only on one machine, but not on ther machine. Can someone tell me what is going on here? Thanks in advance

Storing multiple data types in a class?

I need help writing a class that will contain three values per item.  I'll be passing parameters to a report: Parameter Name, Data type (int, string, date, etc), and Value. When I pass those values to the report using the class they should be in original form (i.e. an integer should be a numeric, a string should be a string, etc.).  I can do it converting the data's value to strings on one end, and reconverting to the original data type on the other, which seems like a lot of runaround. Is there a simple way?  Also, if I'm able to store & retrieve the data in it's native format I don't need the "Data type" stored. Any help or tips will be appreciated.

Calling a method with a class object as parameter data type.

   [WebMethod]    public string GetInfo(Customer inCust)    {        // Code in here    } I have a web service that resides on a remote server. I want to call a public method of theweb service named  "GetInfo". The method is shown above. The web service method expects a class object oftype "Customer". What I did to create a Customer object was to define in my asp.net project my own class named "Customer" which is exactlythe same as the class that belongs to the web service project on the remote server. I then created an instance of Customerand tried to call the web service passing in an object of type customer : my.Service ws = new my.Service(); // Get web service connectionCustomer aCustomer = new Customer();aCustomer.Initialize();ws.GetInfo(aCustomer) // call web service passing in a Customer object The problem is that the compiler gives me the following error: Value of type '_Default.Customer' cannot be converted to 'ws.Class1'. Here Default is refering to my Default.aspx.cs code. Why is this? Do I need to Cast my "aCustomer" class object to a type ofws.Customer ? How do I do that?

Sharepoint Designer 2007 Variable Data on a form

I am a lifetime COBOL programmer trying to make a new career in a Sharepoint world. I am working on a project where I have created a list of Employees.  Almost all of the employees on the list must update their status on a day-to-day basis. A view was created on this list using [ME] as the search criteria to only return the employee who is updating his own info. With Sharepoint Designer 2007 I created a custom form. I cut and pasted the code for the view that I described above and then created a series of buttons to allow the employee to choose a status. For each button, I built a workflow to do the specific updates to the employee's list line. I was able to set up an onclick event for each button to execute a Javascript function that would go to the webpage and start the workflow.  I got the actual workflow URLs from the Sharepoint Intranet webpage after I completed each one. Here is my problem (and it is probably my inexperience that has got me stumped); The URL that is fed to the Javascript function has a hard-coded number representing the ID field of the Employee list (that is what probably sets the "Current Item" in the workflow.  I can see that the listview from above the buttons has the ID field as one of its Fieldrefs.  How can I substitute some kind of ID variable in the set of parameters that is fed to the Javascript?

How To Map A GUID Variable And Use It In An OLE DB Source Data Flow Select Query

I have a simple SSIS package that does the following.

On the control flow tab, there is an Execute SQL task that calls a stored procedure and returns a GUID.

I have a package scoped variable that stores a UNIQUEIDENTIFIER output from the stored procedure. It appears that the package variable data type does not include a GUID data type so I tried to use string instead.

Next, the Execute SQL task is mapped to a data flow task.
Within that data flow task I have an OLE DB Source which connects to a SQL Server Destination task.

On the OLE DB Source Editor screen I have a query that performs the following:

SELECT ID, SessionKey, ....
FROM dba_DroppedLoginsLog
WHERE SessionKey = ?

I have clicked on the parameters button to map the Parameter to my variable called User::SessionKey. This is the output variable from my Execute SQL Task component on the Control Flow tab. This value should be a GUID, but again, I don't see a data type for that.

When I execute the package it fails on the OLE DB Source with the following error:
[OLE DB Source [1908]] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR.  An OLE D

Data view webpart ParentPath variable

Whenever we insert a data View webpart in webpart zone, it introduces following lines of code on the .aspx page for XSLT, What does ParentPath variable corresponds to?

<xsl:template name="dvt_1">
  <xsl:param name="ParentPath"/>
  <xsl:variable name="dvt_StyleName">Table</xsl:variable>
  <xsl:variable name="Rows" select="/dsQueryResponse/Projects/Rows/Row"/>

Variable to Store temporary page data

I'm working on a web page that is going to be used to enter data into a database. The page is going to be dynamic in that the user has the ability to add a row to the table with the same fields, ie lname1, fname1, mi1 then lname2, fname2, mi2

I'm wanting to use a variable to keep track of how many lines there are so that when I generate the added line I am creating a new field with the ID of lname+# . Whats the best way to do this, a global variable, session variable? As side note, first time programming in .Net or C# so I apologize for my lack of knowledge.

Problem with adding custom propety to a data class using Linq.

I tried to add a custom property to the data model:

public partial class Department
        public string ExtensionIdName
                return Extension.ExtensionName;

It seems that it works, but when I bind the data to a ListView it shows all the properties except the property I added manualy (ExtensionIdName).

Am I missing something or is there something wrong?

Designed not adding a new internal variable to the class

I am having a problem with using the Visual Studio Profession 2008 Designer.  When I add a control, it does not add a variable and (therefore) I immediately get compiler errors after I add the control.  I can drag a simple control from the toolbox and not make any modifications and the code will not compile.  I'm not sure what has happened as this used to work (I used to Designer to build this GUI previously).  The code is written in Managed C++.

Generic list of custom class returns data in WCF service layer, but loses them in Presentation Layer

I'm reading this excellent article by John Papa in MSDN Data Points - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc700340.aspx

This single article alone sheds great deal of light on EF, WCF, WPF, MVP architecture, Layered Architecture with these technologies and so much more.

I'm trying to experiment with the code that comes with the article as is.

When executing the application, the service layer returns a Generic List with three Customer objects to the presentation layer. However, in presentation layer, the Generic list arrives with zero objects in the list. In the context of this application, I provide 'd' as a search criteria and hit the search button; while stepping through, I can see it returns 3 rows from the database.

With my limited experience in WCF, I am unable to figure out why it is so. This article was written  for 3.5 SP1 Beta 1. Could something changed in the general release that is causing this?
