Profile Synchronization on a Single-Server Farm

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 14, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
Profile synchronization is documented to not work on a stand-alone SharePoint 2010 installation, but is it supposed to work on a single-server farm?  Profile import works fine in our single-server SharePoint 2007 farms.  The SharePoint administrator here is telling me that we need to add another server to our SharePoint 2010 single-server farm to get profile synch to work.  That does not make sense to me.  A farm should be able to run all the service applications on 1 server (which is the normal configuration in an evaluation environment).  Jeff B

Profile synchronization problem - can successfully import single users but not from a group - can yo

I can successfully import a single user into SharePoint 2010 from AD (proves settings permissions are correct) and the number of user profiles increases and I can locate the user including profile data from active Directory. But when I try to import an Active Directory global security group no users get migrated. In fact the single users profile gets deleted.

Can somebody explain whether it is possible to migrate users into SharePoint 2010 from with security groups in Active Directory?

Also when I retried to import the group of users it deleted the single user that I had successfully imported, I didn’t think this was possible, I ran an incremental synchronization, i need to import roughly 2000 users and was going to do it in stages to make sure all users were imported but if the process can remove users then each sync run could be adding users and removing users, how will I ever keep track?

Below is the synchronization run report, are there logs files that could give me more information?

Sharepoint farm lost a server... How to proceed?

Had a Sharepoint farm I inherited that was running on ____ hardware in a ____ setup- raid controller failed, and the rack was setup so that I have to down 15 servers that might not come back up, just to get at the server... Complete, unrecoverable failure. This server was a member of our Sharepoint 2007 farm, and had Reporting Services on it. There are a lot of little pieces that are still referenced in the Central Configuration. I removed the server forcibly, and need to know next steps, specifically:

1. I tried to move Reporting Services to another server, but I get an error in the Grant Database privileges that I cannot connect to the Report Server's WMI Provider. I created a SPN on a DC, forced a replication a few hours ago, and still no luck. Any Advice?

2. How do I fix all the little things that reference that server? Anytime Sharepoint initiates a web page to Central Administration, it tries to use that server address.

I think the failed server was running SQL 2008 or SQL 2008 R2, and the server I am moving this to is SQL 2005 SP2. I have installed the correct Reporting Services for Sharepoint. Have I missed something?

Time is of the essence because management relies on Reporting Services and I am under a great deal of pressure to fix this. I appreciate any help I can get.

The URL 'ao/AO Document/Admin Guideline/xxxxx.jpg' error on 2nd SharePoint server in farm

We just added a 2nd SP2007 server to mirror our site.  The original site is in China, the new site in the US.  They are connected via a permanent  site to site VPN.  We are hitting the errors when attempting to upload files to the US mirror.    Environment: US server site: OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (64 bit) APP: Windows Sharepoint Server 2007 Enterprise SP2 (64 bit) DB: Windows SQL Server 2008 Enterprise R2 (64 bit) China site: OS: Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP2 (32 bit) APP: Windows Sharepoint Server 2007 Enterprise SP2 (32 bit) DB: Windows SQL Server 2008 Enterprise R2 (32 bit) Background: We setup two test Sharepoint farm to be syncronized with only its content database. The upload works good on SZ site. But we got the following 2 error messages randomly when uploading file to document library of SF side. Error message: 1. The URL 'ao/AO Document/Admin Guideline/xxxxx.jpg' is invalid.  It may refer to a nonexistent file or folder, or refer to a valid file or folder that is not in the current Web. 2. Cannot open file "ao/AO Document/Admin Guideline/xxxxx.jpg". -- We've tried the official hotfix, altering the schema, changing the IIS memory limit settings, and restarting the application pool. Could the issue be related to the different OSes 2008 vs 2003, or 32 vs 64bit?

Failed to change Farm Account in Sharepoint 2010 server, now Central Administration is not accessibl

Hello, I have a problem, that I no longer can access Central Administration Website, only the Sharepoint itself. I was running installation of Sharepoint 2010 Server with administrative account ImTheAdmin, who is a Domain Admin in the domain on one of the Windows 2008 R2 member servers. Besides that, I made ImTheAdmin the primary administrator of the Sharepoint. ImTheAdmin became the only user of this Sharepoint 2010 server after installation.  I installed everything on one box with default installation settings. I used builtin SQL server, not Standard or Enterprise. What then happened is: Using ImTheAdmin account, I opened Central Administration Website, and it said, that I need to change the Farm Account, for the account for Farm was the default one (I think it was network service). So I created a regular domain user MYDOMAIN\SharepointFarmAccount. The account name was too long to be as a Windows 2000 name, so it showed there without last 't', e.g. MYDOMAIN\SharepointFarmAccoun. I thought, Windows 2000 is long gone, so I didn't pay much attention, I think everywhere the account SID is important. I don't know if that is the real problem with my failure later, but it might be one of the reasons. I put MYDOMAIN\SharepointFarmAccount down in to the form of Central Administration Website, added the check mark, that it would react to password changes, and pre

Critical Error with User Profile synchronization timer job

Hello! We are currently running SharePoint 2010 on Windows 2008 R2 servers. Our User Profile Service and User Profile Sync Service are currently running, and profile imports work fine when kicked off from Central Admin. However, the profile sync timer job always fails with the following Application Event error: Event 6398, SharePoint Foundation The Execute method of job definition Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.UserProfileImportJob (ID 340e8ca2-6f3b-4bd8-80f2-0fe011709805) threw an exception. More information is included below. Can you install SharePoint 2010 and User PerformancePoint in a single server enviroment?

Hi I Installed SharePoint 2010 in a single server farm and I configured a Performance Point service aplication. Whenever I run dashboard designer it seems to work but it eventually crashes. I don´t know if I have any configuration errors. I read this Run the Secure Store Service on a separate application server that is not used for any other service. Create the secure store database on a separate application server running SQL Server. Do not use the same SQL Server installation that contains content databases. Here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee806889.aspx I believe this service is necesary to run connect to data sources does this mean it all cannot be run in the same server.

Single Server URL Name Configuration

I have created a 2 Server Farm (WFE/App and SQL) and created a Active Directory Domain (DEV.local) and DNS (DEV.Local) and set up my first site collection via the wizard after install and it works great as hhtp://servername and then I wanted to create a new site http://portal.dev.local and I am having no luck as I must be doing things out of order. I created a Managed Account, Web Application, Site Collection and I can not access it. I created an A Record and then a N Record in DNS and tried to set up Alternate Access Mapings and still no luck.  Is there some documentation on setting this up with a single IP/Machine? Thanks, ReevesDenver, CO

Cannot Add Second FE Server to SharePoint 2010 Farm

Hi folks Well I thought I would add my problem to the others that are also experiencing this issue. I actually reported somthing similar to this forum in Feb 2010 when I was trying the beta version out. I upgraded our WSS farm to SPFS 2010, the upgrade worked, well kinda. Basically our second WFE server would not join the farm after installing the 2010 binaries and runnng the configuration tool and it was complaining with the following error: 07/31/2010 14:35:59  11  INF                              Calling SPFarm.Local and SPServer.Local to get the local farm objects 07/31/2010 14:35:59  11  INF                              SPFarm.Local returned null.  This usually means that the server is not joined.  But, you can delete a server from the configdb without unjoining, which would mean that this machine still thinks it is joined. 07/31/2010 14:35:59  11  INF                              Trying to access th

User Profile Synchronization Connection disappeared

So I had finally got User Profile Synchronization working by going down the path of using the Domain Admin Active Directory account for everything (SQL service account, SharePoint Farm account, Setup account) and the User Profiles worked based on the walk through I created on SharePointAdminWiki.com.  But now, the User Profile Synchronization Connection has disappeared from the list...and if I click Create to try and recreate it I get this error: "Cannot navigate to the requested page while User Profile Synchronization is running. Please wait for the current Synchronization run to finish." There are no jobs running, and I've left it for a while and still no joy. I even tried restarting the server and still nothing! I've tried this with a Windows Server 2008 SP1 build server AND a Windows Server 2008 R2 server. I have read @jiel's and David Pae's advice on this. Are User Profiles just well and truly broken in the Public Beta? Configure Synchronization connections with PowerShell (User Profile)

Hi, I was checking the Pshell cmdlets for SPS2010 and wasn't able to configure the sync connection after creating the User Profile SA. Do you know if it's possible to configure this part (AD, filters, etc) in PShell ? Is it done using the "SetupSynchronizationService" method of the User Profile Service Application object ? Thanks ! Same server farm administrator domain account for both Intranet and Internet Sharepoint site?

Hello,   We are planning to setup 2 streams of architecture for both Intranet and Internet web sites. Just wondering whether there is any best practices/security concerns if we are using the same domain account as the Server Farm Administrator for both Intranet and Internet platform?   Thanks,

Issues with updating Lists with Manager Names and User Profile Imports in SharePoint 2010 Server

I am having a curious problem with SharePoint 2010 Server. I have imported all the user profiles of our organization into SharePoint User Profile Service Application from our Active Directory. When the Manager name imports it comes in as domain/login. The organizational browser seems to work for MOST people, but not all. I believe this is contributing to my second problem, which is, I have setup a very simple workflow in SharePoint Designer that simply looks up the persons Manager, then places that information into a field called "Approval 1". After that it looks at Approval 1 and get the Manager name and populated "Approval 2" with that information, and so on. I have used an Impersonation Step as the Farm Administrator in the workflow and I have done it without the impersonation step. Both results in the same problem. When I enter my name into the list and run the workflow it runs beautifully give every manager up the chain to the top. However, if I put any other person's name in there it gives me the error "Workflow failed to get user profile for user: ____". I went to my supervisor's office and asked him to run the workflow. Using his login he had the exact same result--if my name was in there it worked great, otherwise, it gave an error. Any help with this strange error would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

User Profile Synchronization problems suddenly

I installed User Profle Sync and it was working for a few weeks just fine.  No issues with "starting".  I was able to syn the AD users to SharePoint. Now - for some reason, it has decided to stop working and my event viewer is filled with Event ID 5555 errors over and over again.  I have no clue why it decided to stop working or if I changed something that caused it (or what I changed) and I've tried to restart the service several times, but always end up in "Starting" mode now and the errors persist. I'm a beginner and would love some help here.  I followed this page http://www.harbar.net/articles/sp2010ups.aspx when setting it up the first time and it worked perfectly. So now what?  Do I have to do it all again?
