VS2010 Premium: intellisense disappeared for tags

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 14, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net
I have been off work for two weeks (becoming a father for the first time!) and on my return today have suddenly found that Intellisense has disappeared for all <asp:* /> tags in ASPX pages, presumably because of some Microsoft update in the last fortnight. Based on comments in other forums (e.g. here), I have tried the following, with no success:1.  Tools > Options > Text Editor > All languages > check "autolist members" and "parameter information" (they were checked anyway)2.  Start prompt > Run > devenv /resetuserdata (no luck but this did wipe all my settings, costing me yet more time!)I've noticed that this problem only affects existing files: if I create a new ASPX page, it has intellisense enabled.  Therefore a tedious work-around is to keep a dummy file open alongside my real ones and write the code in there first before copying it ... oh dear!My VS2010 version number is 10.0.30319 RTMRel.  I run 64-bit Windows Server 2008 on a Dell lap-top with an AMD Athlon processor.Has anyone else noticed this (and, if so, do they have any other hints as to how to get it back)?Cheers,Ed Graham

Disable XAML Intellisense in Macro (VS2010 IDE)

I'm writing a few macros to insert XAML code I often use into the VS2010 XAML editor. This works OK, but Intellisense is interpreting the code as it's being inserted. This causes syntax errors. Here's an example of the inserted code: <Grid> <Grid.RowDefinitions> <RowDefinition></RowDefinition> </Grid.RowDefinitions> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition></ColumnDefinition> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> </Grid> The inserted code is a bit more complex as it includes properties I commonly use, but this will help illustrate the problem. When the code is inserted, Intellisense completes the definitions. For example, after <Grid> is inserted, Intellisense adds a corresponding </Grid>, which makes the code syntatically incorrect. How can I automatically disable Intellisense before the code is inserted and enable it after (within the macro)? After the code is inserted, I'd like to automatically reformat it.Thanks!

VS2010 XAML namespace intellisense not working

When I type in a namespace in XAML, I'm not getting any intellisense. For example: xmlns:local="" In VS2008 I would get a long intellisense list here. In VS2010 I get nothing. I have tried this on 2 different computers. What am I missing?

VS2010 automatically puts in paragraph tags

Does anyone know why VS2010 will automatically put an open and close html paragraph tag in my markup everytime I click on save, or save all?  It is really obnoxious.  I have to close the document and click yes at the prompt to save in order to save my document.  If I click save, or save all, it will always place a paragraph tag somewhere in the code and therefore it will need to be saved again.  Uhg!

Cannot connect to SQL Server 2008 after Uninstalling VS2010 ultimate and installing VS2010 premium

I installed VS2010 Ultimate to test it out but had license for the VS2010 premium only.  After uninstalling ultimate and reinstalling VS2010 premium, my SQL Server 2008 now refuses to connect to my databases stating:

How to solve JavaScript IntelliSense problems in VS2010

VS2010 should support all of the VS2008 JavaScript functionalities as shown in Scott Guthrie's VS2008 JavaScript IntelliSense blog .  It includes: 1. Basic type inference 2. IntelliSense from referenced external JavaScript libraries 3. IntelliSense from XML comments for functions, parameters and return types 4. Calling web services using ASP.NET AJAX   Additionally, VS2010 RTM had some improvement, including: 1. IntelliSense when manipulating browser objects 2. Dynamic generated variable IntelliSense 3. Default JavaScript snippets within IntelliSense to help you code faster Scott Guthrie has a brief blog covering some of these.   Due to the dynamic feature of our JavaScript engine, we may run info conflicts between XML commented...(read more)

SSMS Intellisense disappeared

The intellisense disappeared on Sql Server 2008 R2.  To my knowledge I did not change any setting.

no intellisense, smart tag, extender wizard etc

Development Environment:  VS 2008 Pro, IIS 6, asp.net 2.x, sql 2005 server

Installed the version of AJAX Toolkit and Library for the .net 2.0 compatibility (as IIS is still using 2.x)

The problem is as that within the vs 2008 pro, when I select for example a button control...there should be an additional pop-up intellisense indicating...add extender.

to compound this, within the extender control ... the TargetControlID -- should be a drop-down list, indicating which controls are compatible with the extender ... there is no drop-down list.

even if I manually type the control to associate the extender with, this has no effect on the control (such as textbox control) -- as there should be another option appear indicating the association has taken place).

below is the steps to take (as written by MS) -- but this is what I am not getting:

"If the Button Tasks shortcut menu does not appear, right-click the Button control and then click Show Smart Tag."  -- the smart tag is not appearing

To add an AJAX extender control
Switch to Design view.

If the page does not already contain a ScriptManager control, from the AJAX Extensions tab of the Toolbox, drag one onto the page.

VS2010 Professional .NET 4.0 Remote Debugging ASP Website Project

Trying to remote debug ASP website from VS2010 Pro to Windows Server 2003 machine.  Specifically, trying to debug a Web Service, but breakpoint says, "The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document."  This happens for all compiled code though.  I have read this is due to missing PDB files and the work around is to manually copy them, as noted here.  Problem is, I cannot find any PDB files for my project, except referenced libraries, which I can remote debug.

  • web.config has <compilation debug="true">
  • Debugger is attached to wewp.exe process on remote server
  • Installed VS2010 remote debugger from DVD (as I can remote debug referenced libraries)

This is beyond frustrating.  I migrated my code from VS2008 .Net3.5 to VS2010 .Net4.0 to take advantage of the inherent multithreading framework.  Debugging works when using local host and was stable until deployment to test server.

Thanks in advance,

How can I be sure that my entire project is up-to-date and free of errors in VS2010?

Seems like a stupid question, but I will go to Build > Build Solution many many times and the build will succeed many many times, then I will put in a minor syntax error and the build will fail, BUT the build will not fail because of the minor syntax error; it will fail because of an unresolved type that I put in about twenty compiles ago. And then I will fix the minor syntax eror, and the compiler will still complain about the unresolved type. Here is my code:

<%@ Register TagPrefix="FTB" Namespace="FreeTextBoxControls" Assembly="FreeTextBox" %>
  <form runat="server">
  Hello World!!

Pretty simple, really. I go to Buld > Build WebApplication1 and it runs OK. Now, if I put in a minor syntax error, such as substitute "forrrrrrrm" for "form" and then try to Build Solution, it complains not about the misspelled word, but about the FreeTextBox. And then if I correct the misspelled wird, it still complains about the FreeTextBox. Which leads me to believe that Building the Solution does not check absolutely 100% everything that needs to be checked. Is there a more thorough way of compiling a program that I need to use?

Where is SilverLight Toolkit in VS2010?

I read somewhere that MS has integrate SilverLight Toolkit into VS2010. Where is it? I can't find it under Toolbox.

Rendering data with HTML tags in the DD Gridview for a selected column

I am having trouble finding out where and how to HTML Encode a cell's data on the Dynamic Data (v4.0) gridview of List.aspx.  As a simple case, suppose I have formatted cell data that is A<br/>B in the DB.    Obviously, I want A stacked on B in the cell.

It seems gridView1.HtmlEncode = true has gone away.

So maybe I'll try to catch it on the RowDataBound event:

protected void GridView1_RowDataBound(Object sender, GridViewRowEventArgs e)

            if (e.Row.RowType == DataControlRowType.DataRow)
                // Html Encode the cells

but this event never fires?

Has anyone figured out how to properly render HTML tags data in the List.aspx's GridView1?

If I figure this out, then I can add a MetaAttribute called something like [EncodeAsHtml(true)] and be on my way.  Thanks!

Windows Authentication for IIS in Windows 7 Home Premium Edition - for ASP Websites.

How to create a virtual directory and get benefit of the IIS. Is there a workaround to accomplish this without the Windows Authentication for Windows 7 Home Premium Edition?

Thanks in advance,

vs2010 web deployment project restarts w3svc even when restartwwwservice = false

We've updated some of our projects from VS2008 to VS2010.  When these projects are deployed the w3svc is restarted on the target machine, even when restartwwwservice = false in the vdproj file.

This was a problem in 2008 until SP1 (http://forums.asp.net/p/1300097/2534736.aspx).  Does this same problem exist in VS2010?

This is a major problem for us -  we need to be able to deploy projects without restarting IIS.

I've tried creating a new web deployment package and setting the restartWWWService field to false, but this still does a restart when it's installed.

Has anyone come across this problem in VS2010?

VS2010 WDP Optimization

We have moved our projects from VS2008 to VS2010(Ulitmate) but staying with .Net 3.5. In VS2008 we had a web deployment project that would compile the web project to a single dll and emit full debug information, adding the new web deployment project in VS 2010 to do the same the dll is produced along with the pdb but when a dev attempts to debug the variable comes back with "Cannot evaluate expression because the code of the current method is optmized".

In VS2008 we had a targets fix file which had the setting for the optimization but these don't appear to work under 10 (plus the targets file has grown).

Advanced Basics: IntelliSense Code Snippets

IntelliSense code snippets are one of the coolest new features in Visual Studio® 2005. Code snippets are highly customizable code fragments intended to accomplish simple to intermediate tasks quickly; they can be inserted into your code with just a few keystrokes.
