tempdb not pointing to the correct .mdf file in SQL 2008

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 14, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server
We had to restore our master.mdf file. Now when I right click on the properties of the tempdb it shows the path to the tempdb as pointing to the master.mdf file with a logical name of master. I have tried runnng the alter database command and it completes fine. The new tempdb.mdf file is created in the new location but when I go back in to look at the properties in SQL manager it stilll shows as pointing to the master.mdf file. How can I change? Any help would be greatly appreciated.   Steve

LDF File Disaster in SQL Server 2008

I am working on a startup company and the "dba" recently quit...come to find out he let the LDF file grow to 105GB - which effectively shut down the server due to lack of disk space.  I need to serious help as this database is also supporting our replication system and thus I cannot do anything drastic like detaching, deleting the LDF file and reattaching. I tried the shrink file option but the LDF file did not shrink at all.  I set the recovery model to simple, then tried shrinking and that did nothing.  This is a SQL Server 2008 machine - can somebody please help? Also, given that I am mainly a developer, is there some EASY reference on how to setup log file backups so this does not happen in the future?  Do I just perform a full backup every 30 minutes over-writing the previous backup, differentials, what? Thanks!

Restoring 2008 Database with Filestream - Process cannot access file error

I'm trying to restore a copy of a database that has a filestream and am getting the error below. I've tried with move option to specify a new path and left it with default path, neither worked. Did a trace with procmon, didn't see anything. FileStream1 is a new folder that the restore process creates. I've deleted the folder, tried it with a new name, re-took the backup from the source machine, restarted SQL, rebooted the machine, drive permissions are open. I've run out of ideas on how to debug further. Looking up the error online wasn't much help either. Msg 3634, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The operating system returned the error '32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.)' while attempting 'OpenFile' on 'X:\Data\FileStream1\4ecb2e48-0eee-4c99-a3f0-f1e6c7f00b24\f2efe374-9481-4c1b-a7f2-dcdcee350807\0000001b-0000aaa6-00f6'. tempdb file locks

We have an application which has heavy usage of temp tables. I'm trying to sort out what kind of lock issues this can present. So I did a test where I created a temp table and then inserted 100.000 rows in it: declare @counter int     set @counter = 0     while @counter < 1000000     begin       set @counter = @counter + 1       insert into #tmp values('test','test','test',NULL,NULL)     end At the same time I executed sp_lock to see what happens. What I see is that an X lock of type FIL appears. So, this means that every insert creates a database file lock on the tempdb? Doesn't sound that good.

How do you freeze the tablix header row in an Excel export file in SSRS 2008?

So this is totally killing me. I've found out how to make a tablix header row repeat on each page of a PDF export file in SSRS 2008 (which I won't even get started on because all I can say is that 2005 is way better), but I cannot figure out how to make a simple header row of a tablix freeze in an Excel export file.  The tablix is right at the top of the body and spans the entire width of the design area.  How in the world do you get it to freeze in the Excel export file?

How to stop or correct Sharepoint 2007 modifying file locations

I have a Word document that is located at non-Sharepoint location XYZ. This word document has multiple hyperlinks contained within the body of the document. When I try and load this document to a document library it first changes the XYZ location of the original document to the location where Sharepoint resides. THEN, it modifies ALL of the hyperlinks to a subset of the Sharepoint location. I am at my wits end as to how to stop this from happening.

Original File location  Z:\Power\Procedures\somedocument.doc

After upload http:\\ap15\power\procedures\somedocument.doc

The ORIGINAL document is basically a Table of Contents that is several pages long and has several hundred links pointing to different file locations embedded within the body.

I am totally baffled as to how to stop this from happening. At some point all of the documents will get moved to the Sharepoint server, but in the interim I just want to link to the old document, in the old location, with the original links such that everyone isn't going crazy that our procedures are missing in action. HELP.

Doubt on WorkingSetMinimum setting in SSRS 2008 configuration file

Hello All,

I have been reading about memory settings for SSRS 2008 for better performance in this link.                                                          http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms159206.aspx  WorkingSetMinimum definition here says that "Specifies a lower limit for resource consumption; the report server will not release memory if overall memory use is below this limit."

Now, I have set the WorkingSetMinimum value as 2.4GB and when I am executing a report with 300K records, I observed in Perfmon that it has consumed around 1GB of available memory during report run time but the report server has not acquired the designated memory of 2.4GB in WorkingSetMinimum as I can see more memory as available MB than the value supposed to be after dedicating minimum memory of 2.4 GB to report server.

  1. My first question, has report server not acquired the minimum memory configured in WorkingSetMinimum because it didn't required that much memory to construct the report? &nb

trying to use custom assembly with script task in SSIS 2008 - can't find correct version of GACUtil

I am trying to use a custom assembly (compiled with VS 2005 framework 2.0) with SSIS 2008.  I understand that I need to put this Assembly in the GAC.  I initially attempted to do this using the GACUtil, but I apparently only have version 1.1 of GACUtil intalled on my development PC.  Shouldn't version 2.0 have been installed as part of VS 2005?

So I then tried simply copying the dll into the GAC folder using windows explorer.  Well, the dll is now visibly in the GAC folder, but I cannot see it from either VS 2005 or BIDS 2008.  Does that mean I do need to use GACUtil 2.0 or higher to install the DLL into the GAC?  If so, is there any place on the Web that I can download it?

property setting in report server (2008) config file is not working as expected.

I have set the <WorkingSetMinimum> property to 2.4GB in my reportserver 2008 config file.

By defintion, <WorkingSetMinimum> setting means,

  1. Lower limit of service memory consumption; memory will not be released if the consumption is below this amount, though the service will not reserve the designated amount of memory when it starts.
  2. If service uses more than the designated amout of memory, it will release back the memory only till this declared value and not beyond that, which means it should keep 2.4GB as designated.
