MSSQL 2008 R2 - database in restoring mode after backup - forever..

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 14, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

Hi folks,   i have this problem that occourred today with one instance of MSSQL 2008 R2 running on a WIN x64 R2 enterprise server.   i have run a backup maintainance job and now i have two databases in restoring mode for over 4hrs.   my questions are: why are these databases restoring when i was backing up? and why are they not being logged anywhere - i can not find anything on logs, activty monitor, or even Windows Resource Monitor.   i can not see any work been done by MSSQL to restore these databases, and yet they are set as 'RESTORING'.   any suggestion from the community here will be much appreciated as i am banging my head against the wall already.   thanks,   Nicolas    data warehouse | data migration | ETL/ELT | UK | http://www.brainpowered.net

Restoring a Content Database to an earlier MSSQL backup?

We'd like to roll back a content database to an earlier point in time. Is this doable by just shutting down the frontend, and then restoring the MSSQL WSS_Content database, or are there some quirks that we need to take into account?

Restoring 2008 Database with Filestream - Process cannot access file error

I'm trying to restore a copy of a database that has a filestream and am getting the error below. I've tried with move option to specify a new path and left it with default path, neither worked. Did a trace with procmon, didn't see anything. FileStream1 is a new folder that the restore process creates. I've deleted the folder, tried it with a new name, re-took the backup from the source machine, restarted SQL, rebooted the machine, drive permissions are open. I've run out of ideas on how to debug further. Looking up the error online wasn't much help either. Msg 3634, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The operating system returned the error '32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.)' while attempting 'OpenFile' on 'X:\Data\FileStream1\4ecb2e48-0eee-4c99-a3f0-f1e6c7f00b24\f2efe374-9481-4c1b-a7f2-dcdcee350807\0000001b-0000aaa6-00f6'. Restoring a 2008 Database in a 2000 Database.

I've been trying to restore a SQL Server 2008 database in SQL Server 2000 and it seems impossible. Does anyone know how to do it or maybe will be able to point me in the right direction?

SQL Server 2008 Windows Authentication Mode fails for Database Engine, error 18456

I installed SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition (10.0.1600.22.080709-1414) on a Windows Vista 32-bit development machine with Windows Authentication Mode only (no SQL Server Authentication).   Since this is a development machine, I saw no need for Mixed Mode when I did the install.  The SQL Server Management Studio allows me to login to Analysis Services, Integration Services, Reporting Services, BUT NOT the Database Engine!Windows Authentication for the Database Engine gives the following error: EventID: 18456Login failed for user MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>]The 'fix' I have found online is to login as SA in SQL Server Authentication mode & add MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN as a administrator for the Database Engine.  Unfortunately, I can't since I didn't install SQL Server Authentication mode (only Windows Authentication Mode).  It appears my only recourse is to uninstall, then reinstall in Mixed mode, then to login as SA in SQL Server Authentication mode & add MYDOMAIN\MYLOGIN as a administrator for the Database Engine. Before I do so, does anyone know of a better approach?Scott D Duncan

Restoring 2008 Database with FileStream - CreateFile Sharing Violation

I've previously posted this question and turning off the anti-virus scan helped fix it. But I'm having same issue on a machine that doesn't have anti virus scanning enabled. Back story: I'm trying to restore a copy of a database that has a filestream and am getting the error below. I've tried with move option to specify a new path and left it with default path, neither worked.  Also tried the with replace option. FileStream1 is a new folder that the restore process creates. I've deleted the folder, tried it with a new name, re-took the backup from the source machine, restarted SQL, rebooted the machine, drive permissions are open. Msg 3634, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 he operating system returned the error '32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.)' while attempting 'OpenFile' on 'R:\Data\FileStream1\4ecb2e48-0eee-4c99-a3f0-f1e6c7f00b24\f2efe374-9481-4c1b-a7f2-dcdcee350807\0000001b-00005fcf-005a'. Error Restoring sql 2000 backup on SQL 2008 Error: 928

I'm restoring several sql 2000 user databases on a sql 2008 r2 box, but sometimes I receive the following error

Error: 928, Severity: 20, State: 1

During upgrade, database raised exception 156, severity 25, state 1, address 0000000001C05A9F. Use the exception number to determine the cause.

So the error occured after the restore and while upgrading the database schema from version: 539 to 661.

However I notice that if I try to restore it again with the same statement, sometimes it goes sometimes it doesn't.

I'm not finding any 823,824 or 825 errors on SQL log.

The database compatibility level is 80.

While running Upgrade Adivsor on the database I saw 27 objects that use the older outer join sintax *=. However being that just a warning I don't think that's the cause, moreover because if I retry sometimes the restore completes succesfully.

Does anybody knows what is this?

Is this the I/O subsystem failing?

Why is this intermitent?

How do I fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Gabriel

Restoring a SQL 2k backup to a new SQL 2008 db

I got a customer backup (from 2k, the file itself is named 115TCSSQL) that i'm trying to restore to my SQL 08 instance (the db i'm trying to restore with replace to is named 115th) to troubleshoot some goofy records he has.

I run restore filelistonly from disk  and i get the logical name and physical name

TCSSQL_dat E:\SQLData\TCSSQL.mdf

TCSSQL_log E:\SQLData\TCSSQL.ldf

So i try to restore:

restore

database [115th]

2008 R2- Restoring MASTER database from v10.00.1600 to v10.50.1600 fails with error..

Hey Guys,

I backed up the master database on a machine with SQL Server 2008 version 10.00.1600. Then I turned on SQL Server in single-user mode on the new machine with SQL Server 2008 R2 version 10.50.1600 with the following command (using sqlcmd)

RESTORE DATABASE master FROM DISK = 'D:\master.bak' WITH REPLACE;

Running this command gets me the following error.....

Msg 3168, Level 16, State 1, Server U15417546, Line 1
The backup of the system database on the device D:\master.bak cannot be restored because it was created by a different version of the server (10.00.1600) than this server (10.50.1600). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Server U15417546, Line 1
RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

Since i am restoring from a lower version, to a higher version, i assume the restore should be able to complete? I have not been able to find much help regarding this, so any information would be much appreciated.

Backup from SQL srv 2008 stdr R2 now restoring on SQL srv 2008 Dev ... Error

Hi

I used to have a SQL Server 2008 Standrad R2 installed, had 4 databases only. Now it seems that a bit of our project doesn't work that good with R2 so we decided to uninstall R2 ver and install the previos version: SQL Server 2008 Developer.

I backed up my databases, scripts and SPs, uninstalled the R2 ver and installed the the "other" version ... Dev ... now I want to restore my databases and get the following error:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The database was backed up on a server running version 10.50.1600. That version is incompatible with this server, which is running version 10.00.1600. Either restore the database on a server that supports the backup, or use a backup that is compatible with this server. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=10.0.1600.22+((SQL_PreRelease).080709-1414+)&LinkId=20476

I can't find any information on how to restore backwards.

Please help?

No dim as database for Access 2010 project with MSSQL 2008 r2 developer

I am trying to populate some tables in a MSSQL 2008 database using a VBA module an Access project. I can create Access forms that update the MSSQL tables, and access the MSSQL tables directly.

I used similar code with earlier Access and MSSQL. When I try to dimension an object as database,  no such method is in the list, and an error occurs when I try to run. I can't create a recordset until I have a data object.

The MSSQL is 64 bit, and the Access 2010 is 32 bit.

Restoring an encrypted database (TDE) in SQL2008R2 executes forever.

Good day all,

Well this problem first occurred for me when moving from SQL2008 to SQL2008R2. Now I have reinstalled my database machine again and am going from 2008R2 to 2008R2 - same version this time, but same problem.

I have restored my master key and certificate successfully, and the restore seems to complete according to the status output, but the query executes infinitely and the database even after server restart is inaccessible.

Here is the restore code and output:

Quiescing the MSSQL database and Split Mirror Backup

Hi All,
I am trying to implement a backup solution for SAP system on MSSQL database. I have two questions related to the strategies:

1) In Oracle using the BRTools we can implement the split-mirror backup solution, is there a way to implement split-mirror backup solution for a SAP systems on MSSQL database?

2) How do we quiesce the MSSQL database of an SAP system to get the split-mirror backup? Does Quiescing the MSSQL database for an SAP system applicable or its not applicable at all for SAP systems?

It would be really helpful if some inputs are provided on this topic.

Thanks and Regards,
Archana
