Designing my first data cube

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 14, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server
Hi all, I'm designing my first data cube and wanted to entertain a discussion on which approach is best.  Designing the schema first, or modelling the data once it's been imported into SAAS?  The job I have, is that I'm in possession of a number of relational databases, which the firm want to see "BI run against", using SSAS and Performance Point 2007.  I've been given no granularity statement, so I'm left wondering, do I come up with a schema first, or do I try and do something with the data? As I've never designed cubes before, please assume amateur level when posting any response.  Any comments are welcome. Many thanks, Stevenhttp://www.final-exodus.net

Data Points: Designing an Entity Data Model

With the Entity Framework, developers are given more flexibility by being able to design around a conceptual model rather than a relational data model. To get started, you need to know how to design an Entity Data Model. John Papa walks you through that process.

Data Points: Designing Reports with SQL Server Reporting Services 2005

Many applications require some degree of integration with a reporting tool. A good solution, SQL ServerT Reporting Services 2005, provides Web-based reports and can be integrated into both Windows® Forms and Web-based applications.

Retrieve cube data directly from Relational database - is this possible?

I have a cube created in SSAS R2 2008. Now i would like to retrieve some data from this cube, using MDX language, and then to process it in Relational SQL database! Is this possible? I am new in SSAS, please help!

HI ALL. Please let me know is there is any way out to process one partition only, while data of other partition remain available in the cube with the help of SSIS

Cube Refreshment with Data updated in Table

change data source of cube

how to change data source of cube?

How to process two month data only from 10 month data and 8 month data still available to the cube.

HI ALL, I have created cube in SSAS 2008 and created 10 partition on one of the measure which contains 30 day data per partition i.e 10 month data which is filtered on the basis of getdate() -30 to getdate() ,only date part included. Now i want to refresh data only for the last two partition i.e getdate()-60 to gedate() and also to sustain rest of the data i. e.-from getdate()_61 onwards. I have tried full process mode but in that case i have lost one day data. Please suggest whether it can be possible with the process data mode.if not kindly suggest the way how to perform the same.     Regards Amit   Regards Amit

How to enable caching on SSRS that using SSAS cube to bind data

How to set Cach refersh option for a SSRS report that using SSAS cube to bind data

Get source´s data from Cube

Hi All!

While I´m looking for information, I would like to make this question here.

Imagine a data cube that shows the number of people grouped by the city where they live. So, we have, in example:

|Dimension | Fact    |

| NY           |  1200  |

| Atlanta     |  1000  |

What I would like to do is, if I click on the 1200 cell (NY), I would like to get all the 1200 people that live on New York.

Suppossing I have that info but not in the cube as dimensions, in the data source (relational database). It would be possible?

I´m studying the drillthrough, but I think that drillthrough only can get data from the cube (Maybe I could have hidden dimensions with the information).

Thanks in advance!

copy partition data from 2000 cube to 2005 cube

i am upgrading 2000 olap cube to 2005.  i built an ssas project and deploy to the server.

the 2000 olap cube store it's data in partitions - one for each month.

the face table delete it's data and store data for only the last 13 month so basically most of the data

is store onle in the 2000 cube.

while upgrading the cube and processed it , a lot of information had lost.

i know that i cant restore the fact from the partiotn data but is there a way to copy the partition has is

from olap 2000 to 2005?

Pipeline Data Cube Design Question

The Analysis team wants to analyze sales pipeline data. Our CRM system(Source system) send the Data Warehouse team transaction as the Product moves through the different stages.

To mention a few: Creation, CallMade,LeadEngaged,CreditCheck,PapersReceived,Closed. There are more than 100 tracking statuses like mentioned above.

Measures for Additive vs Non-Additive Data. What is cube design best practice?

I'm looking more for SSAS 2008 best practice design advice, rather than for an answer to a specific question (although I have a specifc set of examples).

First issue:  Creating a non-additive measure group and an additive measure group.  We have some fact data in our current cube that is additive, and some fact data that is non-additive; all stored in the same fact table.  We do not currently have measures implemented that reflect this aggregation distinction.  Question:  Is it considered good practice to segregate additive and non-additive fact data into a) different fact tables and/or b) different measure groups?  My thought is that it would be an acceptable design approach, but am looking for feedback.

Second issue:  Non-additive fact data is only available at a non-leaf grain.  The example here is that we have non-additive fact data which is only available for the 4th or 5th levels of our 6-level geography dimension.  Our solution has been to create a custom geography branch, which now essentially serves as our 'aggregation treatment' for non-additive fact data.  I don't believe it's a good practice to have the geography dimension serve this function because we end up having to create a custom geo member for each non-additive fact data element.  Question:  What is considered best practice

Issue in the Format of the Data while retrieving from Cube

I have an MDX which returns me certain columns like "Sales Value", "Sales Units" etc. Now I need to find the average price which will be Sales Value/ Sales Units. But when I write this in MDX then sometimes I either get empty space or any gibberish value. I want to know what format type I need to select to fetch the actual value. My value would come something like, 0.00231.

The MDX that I have written is,

[Measures].[Current Year Sales Value] as ' ( [Measures].[SalesValue], [PERIOD].[All PERIOD].[MAT1]) '

[Measures].[Previous Year Sales Value]

SSRS 2008 Interface with cube data source

Hi All,

Need some brainstorming and your experience here. Here is a situation and would like to understand your thoughts on this.

1. We have developed some cubes using SSAS 2008 to analyse the data.

2. We had some reporting requirement in the past and we decided to use our cube as a data source for the reports and develop using SSRS 2008.

3. We have developed many reports using the SSRS.

4. Now when the reports are passed on to the end users, they are not liking the SSRS interface...like at present we cannot increase the size of the drop down box, sorting any many other things..

As you might already know the SSRS interface i

Fips Compliance of Analysis Services and Encryption of Cube Data

We have SQL Server succesfully set up for FIPS Compliance, But require to setup the same Compliance for the Encryption of Data in Analysis services 2008 enterprise on the same Win 2008 server.

If we browse to the SAS Data Folder for our Project on the Fips Compliant  Instance We can view the Data Files and the Data is Visible in Plain Text. Depite the security setting being set to DataProtectMode 1 (Encryption).

So my Questions:

1. Is Analysis Services 2008 enterprise Fips Compliant ?

2. if it is How do we set it up

3. how do we prove to security Auditors that it is Set up and Working in Compliant Mode.

We have done Exaustive Searches of msdn Google blogs, sql-cat etc and found no relevent articles to Answer these specific Questions and are reluctant to Go to Chargeable support until we have exausted other available avenues.

use multiple data source views in one cube

Is it possible to use multiple data source views in one cube so I can organize each star with separate data source views?
