WSS and Internet Access

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 14, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
I am trying to expose my intranet site running WSS 3/W2K3 R2 to allow internet users to access my site. The server is a standalone workgroup server, not part of a domain.http://mywss is an example port 80. Since I do not have a registered domain .com, .net, etc..; how can I expose and redirect through DNS or port 443. I do not have an ISA or proxy server, Just W2K3 with IIS. A few articles have referred to a reverse proxy solution using ISA. Can this been done in a simple way using IIS, DNS and opening a port in the Windows Firewall. Thanks for any input and instructions.  Hank FarlowHank Farlow

Creating and sharing new sharepoint site to internet, limiting user access

I am a new hire into an existing business as I.T. I know the networking, I know the computers. The owner now wants me to learn Sharepoint among some other things. They currently use WSS 3.0. I have been reading up on this for the last month. I think I am ready to extend the current site to make it an Internet site so the employees can login. Some other things we would like to do I have read up on and it looks like they can be done, things such as inventory tracking in collaboration with QuickBooks and creating a website / portal for clients to have a unique login on and can see the status of their jobs in custom SharePoint lists. As far as I can tell the clients need an AD account. However, apart from that I am not sure what to do. A little background.  The company has multiple clients, and we ship things out daily to those clients.  We use Sharepoint to track the status of the jobs as they progress through the stages ultimately going to delivery. There is one common page that lists all the jobs by all clients that is updated constantly. We would like to allow multiple (different) clients/logins and have a page customized for each client.  For example, you are a client and go to www.companyname.com/sharepointsite.html.  From there you would get to a portal page with a login. Once logged in you will be presented with the Shar

External Internet Access through a proxy server for RSS

I am trying to configure a Sharepoint 2010 farm (3 WFE and 2 AppServers) to load RSS content from the Internet, but our farm is behind a proxied firewall.  I have found instructions for configuring Sharepoint 2007 to be able to access the Internet through a proxy, but have found nothing for Sharepoint 2010.  Are there any new methods in 2010, or is it still modify each web.config file?  I was able to make this work on my test server with the same change as 2007 in the referenced discussion, but I'd rather not mess with the web.config manually if possible.  Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

cannot access sharepoint site through Internet Explorer 8 on a machine running Win XP Service Pack 3

The Sharepoint portal can be accessed fine through Firefox. Opera allows me to access it, but I cannot sign out, check out a shared document or do anything which opens a small window on clicking an option.

I can stay with Firefox, but when I try to edit a shared Word document in Word I get the message "Edit document requires a Windows Sharepoint Services compatible application and Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or greater" We need to edit a shared document/calendar which is uploaded. All I know is we are using Sharepoint 2007 and the version of our site is Does that mean we have Windows Sharepoint Services SP2 on our Sharepoint server?

When I try Internet Explorer, I cannot log on at all. I get a window which asks for my credentials which I enter, it fails to authenticate me, then shows me the You are not authorized to view this page message. I tried with different computers, but cannot get in using Internet explorer.

What could be the issue?

Our Sharepoint admin does not have time to look into such matters so I am on my own.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Setup to access moss 2007 externally when a proxy server is enabled on the internet connection

Does anyone know what setup is required to allow an internet connection with a proxy server enabled to authenticate properly with moss 2007?

The credentials dont get accepted at the moment and the screen goes blank (white) after the three attempts. I gather this has something to do with NTLM not being allowed throguh the proxy server which is the authentication method we have used at the moment.

Microsoft SharePoint Access Over Internet

I'm making a standalone SharePoint site for my team. I have successfully configured SharePoint 2010 on a Windows 2008 R2 server. However, the problem is, I cannot connect to the server from any external computer. I'm a bit new to the SharePoint software, as well as the installation process. I'm not exactly sure what ports I should forward either.

I would also like to know about the entire domain situation. Will I have to register a domain name? Can I use a Dynamic DNS server?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Bulk Copy From XML needs internet access???

I am using bulk copy in c# to import some data I exported from another SQL server.  Everything works fine until I no longer have the internet.  During the import it throws an error on all the data types.

I am exporting the data into an XML that includes the schema definition.  I then bring that into a DataTable with the schema definition and run SqlBulkCopy.

Why is SQL or c# trying to resolve the microsoft schema on import.  The schema came from the sql server?

This app has to work in isolation in some locations and this is a major show stopper.  I never thought that SQL could not handle its own schema definition during SqlBulkCopy.

Any help would be much appreciated.

MVC architecture in ASP.Net using C# and Microsoft Data Access Application block

The Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern separates the modeling of the domain, the presentation, and the actions based on user input into three separate classes [Burbeck92]:

Model. The model manages the behavior and data of the application domain, responds to requests for information about its state (usually from the view), and responds to instructions to change state (usually from the controller).

View. The view manages the display of information.

Controller. The controller interprets the mouse and keyboard inputs from the user, informing the model and/or the view to change as appropriate.

Store and Display Images from MS Access Database Using C#

There is only the difference of coding syntax to stream the binary data of image content type to upload it into MS Access Database using C#/VB in ASP.Net 2.0

Namespaces required:-
using System.Data.OleDb;

OleDb is used to connect the web site forms with MS Access Database using Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0

ASP.Net Upload Image to MS Access Database

As you learnt from the previous articles to upload image to the SQL Database in ASP.Net 2.0 and stream that image into the memory to retrieve it from the database and display it on the web page. In this article you will learn how to upload images to the MS Access database in ASP.Net 2.0

First of all create an Access Database and place it in the App_Data folder of ASP.Net web site project. Then create a table "tblImg" with the following fields:

Wrong Account being used to access files - Help - No Impersonation

I run a simple .aspx website on a Windows Server 2008 machine.

There is NO impersonation, and System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().Name returns NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE, which it the account which the application pool runs. In my web.config, I have <authentication mode="Forms">.

I tried to test the security of the application and server by removing file permissions to the .aspx files. I was greatly worried when the website continued to run without problem (it should not have been able to read the .aspx files).

By turning on file level auditing, I discovered that the .aspx files were being read by the machine$ account (if the machine is called Serv1, then the files would be read by the Serv1$ account, which seems to have access to all files on the local machine).

Is this a security breach or is this behaviour by design ?

Please can somebody assist, as I am worried.

Disallow Direct Access To Files

Here is my dilema, on my site i have a WordPress Audio player (http://wpaudioplayer.com/standalone) that plays my mp3's.

It loads the Mp3's in by javascript...example below:

       AudioPlayer.embed("audioplayer_7", { soundFile: "/Files/Music/[name of file].mp3" });

This file name is clearly visible in the browser source. Not a problem, however this means that any user can legitimately browse to the file directly and download it.

Now i still need the mp3 player (which is flash) to have access to the file but if a user was to try accessing the file directly, they would not be allowed access to it.

I am not sure how to go about this, i am circling the idea of a httphandler but not sure if this is sufficiant to stop the direct access to the file.

Any help would be appreciated

Access SessionState: via App1 to SessionState from App2

Hi .NET'ers,

i'm interested to do the following - i geuss, i have no option to do that:

we have our "mainapplication" on a DB; we are tracking user-login status by switching a bit in the DB in the users data row.

we hvae a second application, the backend, which is the administration tool.

(the applications are put in seperate diretories on HD)

sometimes, we need to block/ban users. in some cases the users are logged in, when we "see them in action".

i'd like to build a button in the backend-application, which logss-out the user from the mainapplication.

for sure: i can access the same DB and switch the bit to "know" he's offline, but this will not kill the session on the mainapplication.

because: if a user is on/offline is also indicated by the session in the IIS.
and as the IIS-session is active, the user may be already banned - but he will not be logged out automatically (and showing something like "you have been logged out because of a ban)

one option would be to call the DB by each page-load to find out, if the user is logged on.

is there any option to implement this?

Microsoft Application Block for Data Access in .NET

Help with me AD access in Asp.NET + C#

Hi All,

Need a help..

I have deployed a asp.net web application with integrated windows authentication mode on.

The requirement is that.. few menu options will be visible to end user based on their role..So I am getting the loggedin user identity and then checking for group of that user..

I implemented this code and it is working fine. I am getting the list of groups user is associated with.

Recently we decided to give access to the student user group also which is the most restrictive group out of all..

we gave folder read folder permission to application folder and when tried to access the site, it is asking for username, password again and again and some times randomly it gives error:

Computer name could not be obtained.

Can anybodly please help me to understand what is the minimum permissions required to a AD user group to acces a windows authenticated asp.net site?
