SQL Server Standard Edition and Servers with more than 4 CPUs:

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 13, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

Hi, We are planning configure a SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition on a server with 8 CPUs - two quad core with hyper threading. The server also runs many SSIS packages and SSRS reports. We would like to assign the highest priority to SQL database engine. Considering the fact that SQL Standard does not leverage more than 4 CPUs, what would be the best way to dedicate most of CPU power to SQL Server database engine? I already found that I can’t dedicate SPUs to SQL Server through this post: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sqldatabaseengine/thread/3b797fc8-3bea-422d-b172-7d1a93195c69 I am a bit concern that manipulating the default settings for Affinity and SQL Server priority might cause harm. That is why I am asking for a good practice for specific circumstance explained here. Any help would be appreciated, Max

SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard edition running from one Core

Hi, I have a client who we just upgraded to Win 2008 R2 Standard Edition and SQL 2008 R2 Standard Edition

They are complaining about System performance.

Looks like SQl runs only on 1 core, maybe sometime 2 which is maxed out.

"Automatically set Processors affinity mask for all processors" is checked and also

"Automatically set I/O affinity mask for all processors" is checked...

The server was maxed out with memory a few days ago but looks to me that that is something taht SQL 2k8 R2 does. The server has got 16GB ram

Pretty urgent. Got 3 hours to solve it.

Thanks

Failures in running Repair for 2008 SQL Server standard edition

Dear users,

2008 SQL Server Standard edition.

While running Repair I got below failures,

1. Upgrade failed due to the following error. The error code is :-214747259.Message:Unspecified error

2. The process cannot access the file 'C:\Windows\system32\perf-SQLSERVERAGENT-sqlagtctr10.0.1600.22.dll' because it is being used by another process.

3. The service did not start due to a logon failure.

I wonder what causes the failures and what I should do to fix them.

Could you tell me what to do?

Thank you,

MS SQL 2008 SBS install fails on Server 2008 R2 Standard edition

According to edition requirement (http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2009/03/23/requirements-for-installing-sql-2008-standard-edition-for-small-business.aspx), I thought I met the requirements but this link tells me not only I need both the standard edition AND in a domain??  I have Windows 2008 Standard R2 edition.

This is a standalone server and there's no domain.  I can promote it to be a domain controller but don't want that.  Is it the "R2" part that its failing.  I can downgrade to the non-R2 with SP2.  (Windows Server 2008 with sp2).

Just fyi incase it helps understand the issue, i had uninstalled SQL from this server and i am reinstallaing it... Could this be the reason.

DB2OLEDB for SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition

The Microsoft OLEDB provider for DB2 (DB2OLEDB) is available in the "Feature Pack for SQL Server 2005 - April 2006."  The installation routine, however, will only install on the enterprise edition or the developer edition.  Is the DB2OLEDB provider not available for SQL Server 2005 standard edition?

SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard edition License update (Developer license to Production License)

We have an MSDN copy of the SQL server 2008 R2 standard edition which we have installed in production environment. We have subsequently bought a licensed copy of MS SQL server 2008 r2 Standard edition. Using the feature Maintenance and Edition Upgrade in SQL setup, we have updated the licensed product key information of the SQL server 2008 R2 from licensed setup file in production environment. We wanted to know how to view the licensed product key information from the server. Also we wanted to check if we have completed the process and we are legally using the software

Query: select serverproperty('LicenseType'),serverproperty('NumLicenses') Is always returning “Disabled” and “NULL” before and after using Edition upgrade with valid license details.
