Considering Holap fact group when requesting large amount of leaf cells

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 13, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

We have a MOLAP fact group which is often queried at the leaf level, with sets of 200 or more records. Holap is considered to have a medium query performance, but, i'm considering Holap because of the large amount of records which can be retrieved ad-hoc from the DWH who do not have aggregations. I would think Holap is more effective in this scenario as I'd think a sql query is faster than a Molap query when you want large sets of leaf data.  What are your experiences/strategies when large sets of leaf data need to be queried ? Do you share this idea that Holap is faster on large sets of leaf data than Molap?Business Intelligence professional

SSRS 2008 group footer totals on a new page has a non-expected large cell height

SSRS 2008 group footer totals on a new page has a non-expected large cell height. When the group total is the first component on a new page, then this happens, but when it is part of the group on but not the first component, then it reverts to normal cell height. I have played with the advance settings now for hours, but cannot get this to work. Any ideas?

adding row group header after the fact

I am aware that when adding a row group, a prompt asks you if you want to add the header and footer.  On my report, all the groupings are already created and do not want to have to recreate them again;  how can I add just the row group header? I can't seem to find the option   Thanks!Javier Guillen

Large amount of handles of type token using role manager and authorisation manager (azman)

First you'll need some background on the application.  ASP.net application using .net framework 3.5. Security to the application is controlled with impersonation, using a role manager connecting to an azman store which uses Active Directory groups for security. As demoed in the following msdn link ... http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff649313.aspxAfter 50 or so users access the application throughout the day, eventually the application stops responding or users start to experience images not displaying etc and the application pool has to be recycled (typical symptoms of the server running out of memory).  Looking at the application memory usage and available memory on the server this does not appear to be the issue, investigations so far have lead me to think this is to do with Security Token Handles.  I've used process explorer to monitor the asp.net application and handles for the application steadily increase with every page that is accessed and eventually hit 38,000 this is when the application dies.  I've read various links saying that applications should use between 2,000-10,000 handles and any number near 40,000 makes the application unusable (this is the exact behaviour we are experiencing).  Using process explorer and handle.exe from the windows sysinternals site I

WCF Service fails with Unexpected connection closed with large amount of data

Good day all,   I'm sure this question is relatively simple, but I'm quite new to WCF (been on a Java project the last few years and it's nice to be back in MS territory even if a lot has changed!).   Anyway, here's all the details of my scenario I was hoping someone could shed some light on.   1)  This WCF service is hosted as a webservice and is being testing in the WCF Test Tool. 2)  There is a method call on the service that, while rarely used, can return a fair amount of data (over 20,000 objects) - this is a requirement of the system 3)  The object that is being serialized has the following signature/contract (property changed for example): [DataContract] public class Foo { private string prop1; [DataMember] public string Prop1 { get { return prop1; } set { prop1= value; } } private string prop2; [DataMember] public string Prop2 { get { return prop2; } set { prop2= value; } } private string prop3; [DataMember] public string Prop3 { get { return prop3; } set { prop3= value; } } private string Prop4; [DataMember] public string FaaCode { get { return prop4; } set { prop4= value; } } private string prop5; [DataMember] public string Prop5 { get { return prop5; } set { prop5= value

Serving a large amount of users on a web server

Hi

I have a project that will be assigned to me soon whereby I need to develop a survey which needs to support 40,000 users approximately. Now we are thinking of doing a staged approach so not all users are on the server at any one point of time. Probably splitting it so we can serve at least a few thousand of users...

I dont have much experience of how I can ensure to serve those levels of users on a server and how to manage this so I am after some advice?

From my understanding I need to do some stress testing on a server and obviously I need some figures i.e. average size of request, average size of response and content of response. Now I am unsure how to collate this so need some guidance?

- Do I have to build the database and add records in to see what size is a typical survey row?

- Do I have to build the survey in .NET i.e. by adding controls etc and seeing what size is the page?

- The survey shouldnt be too instensive processing wise, it will be adding information into a backend sql database...

Many thanks in advance

Handling a large amount of traffic

Hi All,

I will soon be hosting a website that will incur a large amount of traffic.  I will be using many servers to handle this traffic.  I have figured out how to partition the database accross many servers, I will be using a CDN to send out the static files but there is still one huge bottleneck that will slow down my site that I can't figure out how to partition this problem.  When the user types in his browser www.mywebsite.com all traffic will be directed to one page on one server and this will kill performance.  Is there such a service out there free or not where the DNS lookup of my site can be can be load balanced accross many servers so when a user types in www.mywebsite.com he is not always directed to the same server?

Timeout while sending large amount of data with WCF client

Hi,

I've call to Java WebSeal Web "enveloped" by WCF Client. Sending large XML (about 60k) as a parameter cause an error and received one of these messages:

System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException: The underlying connection was closed: A connection that was expected to be kept alive was closed by the server.

OR

System.TimeoutException: The request channel timed out while waiting for a reply after 00:01:00. Increase the timeout value passed to the call to Request or increase the SendTimeout value on the Binding. The time allotted to this operation may have been a portion of a longer timeout.

Interaction with same webseal service configured as asmx service doesn't cause any errors.

my client app.config looks like this:

<bindings>
      <basicHttpBinding>
        <binding name="WinflowSoap" closeTimeout="00:01:00" openTimeout="00:01:00"
         receiveTimeout="00:10:00" sendTimeout="00:01:00" allowCookies="false"
         bypassProxyOnLocal="false" hostNameComparisonMode="StrongWildcard"

Optimizing Linq Group By (large data set)

Hello,

I've noticed that the query below takes a very long time to run... sometimes around 1 minute, when the "results" set exceeds about 30k records. The "results" set is search results based on a users search criteria, and even with 30k+ records, only takes about 1 second execute. The purpose of the query below is to populate a "Top 5 Keywords" ListView of Keyword links that will allow the user to further filter the results set. I'm assuming the the grouping for a 1-m relationship over 30k records is why this is taking so long. Any idea how to improve this query to be < 1 sec, or should I be going about this a different way? Thanks!

                from result in results
join kit in db.KeywordInTitles on result.TitleId equals kit.TitleID

Design question for large fact dimension/many to many dimension

I have a pretty typical orders fact table that is aggregated to 1 line per order.

Each order may have between 0-x errors

I implemented this as a many to many dimension with one field in my intermediate fact table being the error number and the other field being the order id

this requires that i have a fact dimension on the orderid(int32) column.

Right now there are about 10m orders per month, putting my annual count around 120m which doesn't leave a lot of room for growth to stay under the ~150m key member (4GB) size limit for a dimension in SSAS.

I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts on this. I have found 2 different strategies that might work, including using ROLAP For the order dimension or breaking the order dimension into 3 or 4 separate dimensions discussed here

Calculations on specific cells of column group in tablix

i have a tablix which shows sales for current period,year-to-date,last year period, and last year year-to-date.

sales         P4   YTD  LastYearP4 LastYearYTD

x             100   400    85               230

y             23    99     19                 82

TOTAL     123  499    104              312

i want to have an index column based on formula current period/last year period. Here periods are part of column group.

Edit GridView Individual Cells in ASP.NET

The ASP.NET GridView allows for a row of data to be edited by setting the EditIndex property of the GridView, placing the entire row in edit mode.

You may not want the entire row in edit mode if you are using DropDownList controls for several columns in the EditItemTemplate. If each DropDownList has many options then loading them all at once may result in a sluggish page. Also, if your data structure is more like a 2 dimensional array rather than a set of rows, you may want to edit each cell individually.

Here I will demonstrate how to achieve this and also how to deal with event validation without disabling it.

Problem to group radio button across gridview rows

In general no one can easily group or make a single selection from radio button list inside gridview rows. There are a lot of way to make a single or unique selection from list. Here i want to share how i can address this problem in the most easiest way. Googling the problem most of the cases i saw the grouping in horizontal way. Thats why i tried to group the radio buttons in vertical manner. Let i have a requirement like below:

Group Calendars in SharePoint 2010

One of the many requests I had in SharePoint 2007 was the ability to place SharePoint Calendars on top of each other like you can in Outlook 2007 saving you having to look at each and work out when the best time is for a meeting.

ListViewControl - how to group items by their value, for eg. date range

Hi,

I have a table containing courses, columns are

Name - "Yoga Classes"

DateStart - "2/23/2010"

DateEnd - "2/24/2010"

I am using ListView Control to bind it, is there a way to display them and group them by Month?

for eg.

January

Piano Class (10th Jan 2010 - 11th Jan 2010)
Guitar Class (10th Jan 2010 - 11th Jan 2010)

February

Yoga Class (15th Feb 2010 - 16th Feb 2010)
 etc...

Thanks for help.

Persist large dataset across ASP.NET pages. No database

Can anyone give me suggestions on how to implement the following requirement?

1. A online wizard (step-by step operation) processes user requests across several ASP.NET pages.  The session data is stored in memory until the user submits the request.  Once the request is submitted, a XML file is created and the data are passed to XML.

# Case Study: The parent page has a "select" button.  Click "select" will pop up a child page.  The users can select 1000+ items from a datagrid in the child page.  Once the user clicks "confirm", the selected items in the child page will be populated to the selected item gridveiw in the parent page.  The user can keep selecting more in the child page and the selected items will be appended to the gridview in the parent page.

Questions:

- What's the best way to extract strings from a text file and convert to a dataset in memory and then present it in a datagrid in UI?

- What's the best way to persist and manipulate a large dataset across pages?  Session? or ViewState? Can it be accomplished by LINQ?

The app doesn't interact with a DB.  Once the request is submitted, it will convert the in memory data to a XML file.  What technology can be used to accomplished this?&nb
