Office 2007 Documents Open in Read-Only when Opening them from a WSS 2.0 Document Library

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 13, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
Hi, When any of our Windows 7 Pro computers that run Office 2007 Pro attempt to open a Word document that resides in a WSS 2.0 document library by using the drop down menu and selecting "Edit with MS Word", the documents open in read-only.  Our work-around is to save the document locally, modify it, and then save it back to the document library. We have some Windows XP and Vista systems that run Office 2007 and they are fine and can simply edit the document and save it.  We also have a handful of pc's that run Office 2003 and they are not having any issues either. Things I've tried: Office 2007 Repair - no luck Office Reinstall - no luck Some registry mod HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12\Internet\OpenDocumentReadWrite=1 (noted on a MSKB article) - no luck and after re-reading the article it clearly states that this will not address content hosted on WSS or SPS sites Clearing IE temp files, resttting IE to defaults - no luck Once again, this only seems to happen to Win7Pro pc's that run Office 2007.  Honestly, I can't tell if IE8 has anything to do with this. Any thoughts or help would be extrememly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Check-out issue when opening a document from a document library when a read-only copy is open

We have an issue when a user has a read-only copy of a document from SharePoint open and then tries to check-out and edit another copy of the document (i.e. from the document library) the checked out copy is not connected to the web server. For the user it will look the same they will make edits, save and then close, but when they do so the document is not updated in SharePoint - it may be saved locally in their SP drafts, but the user will think that they have lost their version. We then get the checked out to another user error and you have to discard changes to get the document working again. Steps to reproduce this issue: * click on the name of a office doc on a Document Library * Make sure "Read Only" is selected and click "ok" * Minimize open document * click on the same file on the Document Library * Make sure "check out and edit" is selected and the "Use my local drafts folder" checkbox is ticked. Select OK. * Edit document and press save. Changes are never saved back in SharePoint, they are only on the local draft. We are using MOSS with SP2. Clients are on Office 2003 and 2007 Is this normal behaviour? Is there anything that can be done to prevent this from happening?

Open Office Documents from Document Library without Password Prompt

We have a SharePoint site and Document library set up for anonymous access.   All non-Microsoft file types open correctly without a password.   When users click on Microsoft Office documents they are prompted for passwords.   Is there some way to configure the Office documents or Document Library so that users are not prompted for passwords when they open documents or is this a bug?

All documents open as Read Only in Office 2010 from SharePoint 2007

I have recently installed Office 2010 and now when I select "Edit in Microsoft Word" from a SharePoint document library, the document will only open as Read Only.  I am running SharePoint 2007 SP1, I have admin rights to the workstation, server, sharepoint list and document.

I have tried the registry entry " OpenDocumentsReadWriteWhileBrowsing = 1 " but that has made no difference.  I have also run webfldrs.msi with no effect.  The website is a trusted site and I have switched off all of the protected view options.

Any help welcome!

Error opening Office Open XML file when using SD workflow to create item in document library.

I have a Sharepoint document library that is using a word template with xml mapping (Word-Sharepoint).

I have a workflow created in Sharepoint designer that Creates an item in this document library with select data from a form library on the same site.

It appears to create the entry in the document library correctly, it is showing the copied data from the form library and the correct default data in the columns specific to the document library. The explorer view shows the filename.docx files.

I am able to edit the data using the datasheet view, however it will not open the word document.

The error message reads "The Office Open file <filename> cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents." If I click on the details button it states "No error detail available".

Any ideas?

Unable to save Office 2007 document to SharePoint My Site Personal Documents document library

...also when Office documents are saved to document library they open as Read-only and cannot be saved back to the same document library.

This only happens in my production SharePoint 2007 environment from client XP and IE7 machine.  It does not happen in developement environment (which mirrors production) from client XP/IE7 machines.

Save works fine to SharePoint document libraries from client Win 7 and IE8 machines in both production and development environments.

This only happens when attempting to save to a My Site Personal Documents document library.  Any other document library this behavior does not exist from XP or Win 7 machine.

What settings controls ones ability to save to a personal My site document library.  What setting could be different between prod and dev installations?  It only happens

Unable to open pdf from document library MOSS 2007

When I click on a pdf document uploaded in a document library it comes up with a blank page.

I guess it's trying to open pdf on the browser. I turned off "Display PDF in browser " option in Adobe Preferences, but it doesn't help, same issue.

I tried other browsers too, it's the same issue.

I am able to open all other pdf files local to my machine fine.

I am using IE 8 on my machine (Windows 7) and the Sharepoint server is MOSS 2007.

Sharepoint 2007 - 80GB Documents in 1 document library

Hi, My customer wants 'customer docs' in SharePoint. It is now stored on several disks and wants to move it to SharePoint 2007(!). It needs to go into a folder structure.....I'm now investigating the information that needs to move to SharePoint and it turns out a quick scan resulted in 210.000 documents with a total volume of 80GB. Off course this is raw data and thus containing archives, zips, access databases and a lost movie and the like (just like any normal network drive :-)). When I look at the limits and best practices: no folder should contain more then 2.000 items (OK) no doc lib should contain more then 2.000.000 items (more then OK) no file should be larger then 2GB (OK - we set it to a max of 150MB) It is all fine but my concern is the shear size of the total load. Let's say they don't migrate 80GB but 30-50GB. My Question: can a single MOSS 2007 document library hold this kind of documents and total size? What does this mean for overall performance, backup, search indexing, crawling etc etc?  Thnx for any tips!

Document is read-only in SharePoint, but user sees "check out" option in Office 2007 / Word / Excel

I am finding that when there is a document library in SharePoint with checkin/checkout required, if a user with read-only ("Visitor") permissions opens a document from that library, the document will open as read-only in Word, Excel, etc., but the user will see the "Server Document" bar with the message "To modify this document, you must check it out" and the "check out" button.  When the user tries to check the document out, they are asked to authenticate, and then receive the error "Cannot perform this operation.  The file has been deleted or someone else has it checked out."    How is it possible to prevent a user with read-only rights in SharePoint from seeing the "Check out" option in Word or Excel?

Windows 7, Office 2007, and WSS 3.0: Losing file path when saving to Document Library.

A client of ours recently purchased 5 desktops with Windows 7 and Office 2007.  They use Sharepoint to share all documents for their company. The computers that have Windows XP on them can browse the Sharepoint site, open documents (read only or edit), and chose to Save or Save As.  A new window pops open with their current file path of the Sharepoint Document Library so they can save the file in the same folder they opened it from.  I have tested this with Office 2003 and 2007 (Word and Excel) on XP and it always works. The 5 new desktops running Windows 7 cannot do this.  When a user opens a document by browsing to it from Internet Explorer and chooses to Save or Save As, they are kicked back to their last successful save point (usually My Documents or Desktop). The current work around is mapping a drive to the root Document Library directory and having them traverse through the folders to save it back in the original location. I've tried changing the Check Out save settings in Word 2007 and Excel 2007 to edit directly on the server, but I run into the same problem.  I've also made sure that IE sees the site as a Local Intranet site and Protected Mode is off. Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Currency and number column error with office 2007 document formats in SharePoint 2010 library

Hi there,

The following error occurred within a SharePoint 2010 document library:

As I tried to test out the new SharePoint 2010 environment I changed the metadata from a few documents within a document library. I noticed that the data from the currency und number field was incorrect from a few documents. The numbers looked like that the decimal separator were ignored. For an example: 123.456,78 was saved as 12.345.678.

At first I thought it could be a language incompabilty but if that would be the case: Why would there be other documents which show the correct number?

I created another document library to recreate this error. And there I noticed the real reason: Every time I changed these fields from a document which was saved in the office 2007 format the error occurred. The metadata from the documents in the office 2003 format were correct.

Has anyone a similar problem or got an idea how to solve this problem?

Login prompt when opening office documents in SharePoint 2010 library

Environemnt : SharePoint 2010
Windows based authentication being used for site. All SharePoint servers part of the same network.

When i try opening office documents from document library( .docx, xlsx), SharePoint prompts for login credentials even though i am already logged into the website, worse part is that it prompts me for credentials for every document that i open. Also any files other then PDF opens up in the local machine's office application (word or excel) instead of in the browser.

I had migrated this webspplicatoin from MOSS and then did a visual upgrade as well to it, when i verified in the MOSS version of the site after i am log into the site ones it never prompts for login credentails ever when opening an office document.

Any body knows why this is happening.

Long delay opening Word documents from SharePoint 2007 with Office 2010

The first time a document is opened it's fine, opens in just a few seconds.

Subsequently, there is a long delay (about 20 seconds) in the "Contacting server for information..." step.

This happens to all users and all documents, each one will open fast the first time then slowly the second and subsequent times (until, we think, the app pool is recycled - there is no schedules iisreset/reboot).

This does not happen when using Office 2007.

IE6 and 7 exhibit the same behaviour.
