Can I safely perform full backups without breaking log shipping? Can I do point in time restores if

I'm building a system using SQL Server 2008. I have log shipping set up across our WAN, and that's working fine. I need to perform local backups on the primary server so that I'm not relying on the (slow) WAN if it needs to be recovered from a server crash. Ideally, it would be nice to be able to perform point in time restores. I understand that I can use the transaction log backups, created for log shipping, to restore from. But I still need a full backup to start the restore from - and there seems to be some confusion regarding whether or not performing a regular full backup on the primary server will affect log shipping. Even on these forums, conflicting advice has been given, with some people saying it's fine as long as you don't do transaction log backups, and others saying you must run COPY ONLY backups (though they were talking about Server 2005). From what I understand, you can't do point in time if you use copy-only backups. I'm getting the impression that this used to be a problem under 2005, but under 2008 you can safely perform full backups while log shipping is running. Can anyone confirm my understanding before I make a career-altering error? :)

Can´t get the time intelligence filter to work in PerformancePoint Services/Sharepoint

Hi all, I have created a scorecard in Dashboard Designer based on an SSAS cube which looks ok in both DD and Sharepoint. As I want to connect a time filter to this I have created a TI filter in DD. In Sharepoint I have connected the filter to the scorecard with "send performancepoint values to". In "configure connection" I set source value to "PerformancePoint Values: Formula" and Connect to to "Endpoint_TIFormula". I only need to filter on year and have set the TI properties on the cube. Selected time dimension is "Year", Hierarchy level is set to Year, Member is 2008, reference date is 1/1/2008 and I have associated member level Year to Time aggregation Year. The filter is set up like this in DD: it uses the same data source as the scorecard and I use a list view. I do get the filter to work if I specify one formula for each year (e.g. Formula: "Year" and "Display Name: "2010", "Year-1" and "2009" making up two rows) but that can´t be the right way to do it, right? What i would like is a multiselect tree view where I can choose the year I want and have them display on columns. I have tried the formula Year:Year-2 and in the preview I see [Date].[Year].&[2008],[Date].[Year].&[2009],[Date].[Year].&[2008]. However, in Sharepoint the filter only show on

Remember me next time doesn't work

In the login control, the "Remember me next time" checkbox does not appear to work.

If I check it when logging in, when I log in the next time, even a minute later, I go to the login page again.

It seems the cookie is not being written to the client.  Can't find it anywhere.

My web.config contains:

    <authentication mode="Forms">
      <forms slidingExpiration="true" timeout="525600"/>

Your help would be much appreciated (any code snippets preferably in VB, please).

Thanking you in anticipation.

Request time out while using WebClient .Net frame work 2.0

In our application developed in .Net framework 2.0, we have a requirement to download multiple files from WebServer (IIS 6.0) simultaneously, the file count is not defined it can exceed 40 or 50 or more and the file size is less then 1 kb. We are using WebClient to download file one by one and “dispose” it as soon as the file is downloaded.

The issue here is sometime we get “Time out error” for some files and some files are downloaded successfully.

We have already tried setting ServicePointManager.DefaultConnectionLimit property but still the issue persists.

AGGREGATE over a time period: how to behave like a distinct count ? (aggregate on the full period an

I would like to compute a measure "MyMeasure" over the last 12 months :

Aggregate({[Event DATE].[Calendar].CurrentMember.Lag(11):[Event DATE].[Calendar].CurrentMember},[Measures].[MyMeasure])

MyMeasure is not a distinct count, so the results returned is the SUM of the distinct count performed on each month over the last 12 month.

What I would like to have is the distinct count over a full year (all months taken together).

For example, suppose that MyMeasure is a simple measure that always returns 1.

The aggregation returns 12 (1 for each month then SUM). I would like it to return 1 (measure on the whole period).

Can somebody help me that's really a very big issue I have to fix !

SQL Procedure Doesn't Work Every Time

Hi all,

Long time reader, first time poster.  I'm currently building a web application in ASP.NET and as a small part of it, I need to insert a record into a MS SQL2008 database and return a value from it.  I'm doing this via a stored procedure using the SqlCommand class from my C# file, but it's not giving me consistent results.  For now, I'm merely focusing on getting the record inserted correctly.

My basic stored procedure looks like this:

USE [airs]

ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[uspInsertDemoInfo]
	@caseID			INT,
	@LastName		NVARCHAR(50),
	@FirstName		NVARCHAR(50),
	@Title			NVARCHAR(50),
	@Institution	 NVARCHAR(100),
	@City			NVARCHAR(50),
	@State			NVARCHAR(50),
	@Age			NVARCHAR(50),
	@Gender			NVARCHAR(50),

Point In Time Recovery of Database with Full-Text Search enabled SQL 2005

Is this possible?

Backup made at 10:30

changes made in system

Tail of the log backup taken at 10:35

Restore to point in tim 10:33

At this point I get the error System.data.sqlclient.sqlerror: The File "sysft_yadayada_1" was not fully restored by a database or file restore.  The entire file must be successfully restored before applying this backup set.

BUT when I restore the database to most recent possible I have no issues..

when I do a select * from sys.master_files    sysft_yadayada_1 does not exist in that list, but  sysft_yadayada_5 does... When we were initially configuring fulltext search for this application we had a couple hiccups first till we got it working and thats the filename that ended up sticking.

Round off time to the nearest minute

How would you round this up to the nearest minute? There isn't a built in function to do this so you have to use a little bit of maths to get there. There are 60 seconds in a minute. We already have 38 seconds on the clock. So we need to add on 60 - 38 = 22 more seconds.

RadioButton inside GridView, How to get it work as normal

Performance Tests: Precise Run Time Measurements with System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch

Everybody who does performance optimization stumbles sooner or later over the Stopwatch class in the System.Diagnostics namespace. And everybody has noticed that the measurements of the same function on the same computer can differ 25% -30% in run time. This article shows how single threaded test programs must be designed to get an accuracy of 0.1% - 0.2% out of the Stopwatch class. With this accuracy, algorithms can be tested and compared.

Date and Time Functions in SQLSERVER

Date and time functions allow you to manipulate columns and variables with DATETIME and SMALLDATETIME data types.

Data Types - Date and Time in SqlServer

Date and time values can be stored with either the DATETIME or SMALLDATETIME data type. The difference between the two is that SMALLDATETIME supports a smaller range of dates and does not give the same level of precision when accounting for time. The DATETIME data type can hold values from January 1st of 1753 to December 31st of 9999. The time is stored to the 1 three hundredths of a second and each value takes up 8 bytes of storage. The SMALLDATETIME data type can hold values between January 1st 1900 and June 6th of 2079. The time is tracked to the minute and each value takes up 4 bytes of storage. The majority of business applications can live happily with SMALLDATETIME, however, if you are in an environment where each second matters or you need to make estimates to the distant future (or past) then you have to resort to DATETIME. If you fail to specify the time when inserting a value into a DATETIME or SMALLDATETIME column, a default of midnight is used. If you fail to specify the date portion the default of January 1, 1900 is used.
