In WSS 3.0, I made a custom.master and made some very minimal customizations: different background colors, attached a custom.css, etc. No big layout changes. Just colors and logos and fonts. For all intents and purposes it looks almost like the default master
page of 2007 but with my corporate colors, branding, and identity.
We upgraded to 2010 and my admin kept me in the "previous version of the user interface." When I tried to "preview the new user interface" in Site Settings>"Title, Description, Navigation", my custom master was completely wiped out by the new v4.master.
It did add the ribbon, etc, but I want my corporate identity too. So I went back to the "previous version of the user interface."
Now my plan was to follow
this article and remove old placeholders, and add the new ones so that I can use the server ribbon.
I tried all that. I found that doing that added some duplicate placeholders, so I removed the old ones, saved, and the page looks the same as it did in WSS3.0: no ribbon appears at the top. It looks the same as if it was WSS 3.0.
Is what I'm doing possible? Or do I need to start with a v4.master, and add my pre-2010 cusomtizations into that file to take advantage of the new v4core.css, etc? Or do I need to attach the new v4core.css to the master in the 2010 site?
This article made a lot of sense
