Running a copy of Central Administration on a second server, how do you do this?

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 12, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
According to Microsoft's details on capacity management and planning below - you can have a copy of Central administration running on a second server, I always though you could only have CA running on one server. How do you have a copy running on a second server? http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff607864.aspx Quote from site - "App-2 is a dedicated Search query server. It also contains a copy of Central Administration and For high availability, Central Administration is also installed on a front-end Web server on another host." Obviously you don't run the installation software as you have multiple copies of the CA database and config databases but you couldn't have a restored site collection either as this would be out of date as soon as you installed it so how do they propose you do the above, they actually state having two copies and the original in the link above?

Failed to change Farm Account in Sharepoint 2010 server, now Central Administration is not accessibl

Hello, I have a problem, that I no longer can access Central Administration Website, only the Sharepoint itself. I was running installation of Sharepoint 2010 Server with administrative account ImTheAdmin, who is a Domain Admin in the domain on one of the Windows 2008 R2 member servers. Besides that, I made ImTheAdmin the primary administrator of the Sharepoint. ImTheAdmin became the only user of this Sharepoint 2010 server after installation.  I installed everything on one box with default installation settings. I used builtin SQL server, not Standard or Enterprise. What then happened is: Using ImTheAdmin account, I opened Central Administration Website, and it said, that I need to change the Farm Account, for the account for Farm was the default one (I think it was network service). So I created a regular domain user MYDOMAIN\SharepointFarmAccount. The account name was too long to be as a Windows 2000 name, so it showed there without last 't', e.g. MYDOMAIN\SharepointFarmAccoun. I thought, Windows 2000 is long gone, so I didn't pay much attention, I think everywhere the account SID is important. I don't know if that is the real problem with my failure later, but it might be one of the reasons. I put MYDOMAIN\SharepointFarmAccount down in to the form of Central Administration Website, added the check mark, that it would react to password changes, and pre

Cannot login to WSS 3.0 on Server IE8, but can log in via Central Administration!

Hi all,

Just patched and updated our server running Server 2003 Standard and WSS 3.0.  One of the patches was IE8 so I said go ahead.  Well now, if I go to our site (http://sharepoint) I am prompted for a username and password while logged in as the domain admin account/sharepoint admin account (this happened before, so its ok) but when I put in Domain\Username,Password it just blinks away and comes back.  I will eventually get "you are not authorized to view this page".  No passwords have changed, etc.  If I open up Sharepoint 3.0 Central Administration, that does work and I am not asked to authenticate.  I have the site(s) in my trusted sites and have username/password set to pass through.  What the heck???  I can "Log in as a Different User" and provide the domain admin credentials and get in... just not on the actual server.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Central Administration Server

I made a pretty bad goof when trouble shooting an issue within my SharePoint 2010 farm.... To be brief - I disconnected the application server that was hosting the Central Administration site and have nt been able to re-attach it.... Attempts to re-attach it result in an inability to locate the database - which I suspect may be permission related..... The initial problem I was addressing had to do with changing the default zone alt access url... When attempting to change - received error saying that I was trying to "delete" - which was not what I was trying to do... After a few tries and ended up getting a 500 error when accessing central admin site. I tried running configuration wizard from server, I was prompted to disconnect the server from the farm - which was successful.... Now I can get it back in the farm.... This is a SharePoint 2010 server connecting to a db running on a seperate server... My other Sharepoint sites are up and running....

Thanks for your help ....

Turning off Crawling the Central Administration site?

There are 2 places that "Search Visibility" can be set on WSS3 servers:

Default > Site Settings > Search Visibility

Central Administration > Site Settings > Search Visibility

What are the ramifications of "hiding" the Central Administration site from search?

Can managed code "detect" if it is running in the normal .Net CLR or the special SQL Server CLR? Is there some environment flag or field we can look at at runtime? Thanks Cap'n

SQL Server to SQL Server Compact Edition Database Copy

I recently switched from XP to Win 7 and am getting an error when using the SQL Server to SQL Server Compact Edition Database Copy wizard from johnnycantcode.com (link). I suspect that the problem is with the configuration of the path for the DQL CE dll. 1) Does anyone know where the configuration is set? It isn't in the GLT.SqlCopy.exe.config file in the local directory. 2) Has anyone got the program to run under Win 7? Thanks marc

SQL-Server 2005 x64 / windows server 2003 x64 crashes during file copy

Hi We are running: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard - 9.00.4294.00 (X64) Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise x64 We have gigabit interface. Today we copied a file (using robocopy) from our databaseserver to another server (backup-server). The copy was started from the backup-server and source were specified using UNC. The copy were using about 20% of the bandwith (about 200Mbit). During the copy, sql-server reported several errors, for example: AppDomain 15 (mp.dbo[runtime].14) is marked for unload due to memory pressure. The client was unable to reuse a session with SPID 75, which had been reset for connection pooling. This error may have been caused by an earlier operation failing. Check the error logs for failed operations immediately before this error message. ***Stack Dump being sent to [PATH\SQLDump0005.txt Resource Monitor (0x1384) Worker 0x000000008000C1C0 appears to be non-yielding on Node 0. Memory freed: 0 KB. Approx CPU Used: kernel 15 ms, user 218 ms, Interval: 428541. So to me it appears that sql-server crashed during a file copy. We have 27 GB ram. With 24.5 GB dedicated to SQL-Server. The files we copied were quite large, some over 50GB. I found a similar issue about this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920739/ Do you think the issue above could be the cause of the sql-server crash? ///Patrik

net.tcp://localhost:80/MyService client/server errors while IIS is running - even though all Net.TCP

Hello, I am trying to create a simple WCF client/server solution in two Windows Forms projects, respectively.  I am using net.tcp binding on port 80 and have enabled the port sharing property.  My NET.TCP Port Sharing service is running.  I am using Windows 7 x64 and logged in as an administrator.  I've added my username to the smvchost configuration files, in both Framework and Framework 64 directories. I also have IIS running on port 80. However, there seems to be a conflict between net.tcp on port 80 and IIS on port 80 simultaneously.  My understanding was that the Net.TCP Port Sharing is supposed to be the solution for this very scenario. Here are the specific issues: 1.  I start the server in debug mode, which works fine.  I then try to connect with the client, and get the error: "You have tried to create a channel to a service that does not support .Net Framing.  It is possible that you are encountering an HTTP endpoint".  This seems to imply that the NET.TCP Port Sharing is not forwarding the request to my WCF server, and instead is encountering IIS.  This is the first problem. 2.  The second issue is that the Server starts fine in Visual Studio in debug mode, however when I try to run it as a compiled EXE (and right-click - run as admin) it errors "The TransportMana

Moving a Copy of SQL Report Server 2005 and Upgrade to 2008

Hello, We have SQL 2005 Report Server in a Windows 2003 64 bit server box. We want to create a copy of this report server database somewhere in the domain, so that we can access it for a different purpose. My question is, will there be any complications with this? I'm thinking about the encryption key that's needed to access the database. If we are successful with this, we might also want to upgrade to SQL 2008. Thanks for your help,   Elizabeth K.

Hi All, Using Merge Replication over the web (https). Server is running SQL Server 2008, client using SQL Server Express 2008. I am getting these error messages while trying to synchronize, and it won't let me sync: {call sp_MSensure_single_instance (N'{459D0BBA-53EC-4F65-AF52-E7DA478841DA}', 4)} Another merge agent for the subscription or subscriptions is running, or the server is working on a previous request by the same agent. Can Web Services be blocked by Central administration ?

I am a Site Collection administrator. I am thinking of using Web Services (_vti_bin/Lists.asmx etc.,) and display some data regarding Lists, Permissions, SubSites on some pages. My question is whether accessing these web services at site level can be blocked by central administration or not. If they cannot be blocked, then I would like to go forward on what I have mentioned above. Can anyone please clarify. Thanks.
