WSS3.0/MOSS2007: best way to teamwork on a large document

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 12, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
Hi, we have the requirement to teamwork on large worddocuments and I would like to sort out which different approaches exist. I know with Sharepoint 2010 and Office Webapps you are able to edit a document with several users at the same time, but here.. we have WSS3.0/MOSS and Office 2003/Office 2007. What is best practice when working with large documents in a team ? I would consider the following Working in offline mode (without MOSS) then I would tell the users to slice their document into pieces (chapters) and use MASTER and SUBDOCUMENTS, because then.. each chapter can be edited by an individual person. I know that MASTER and SUBDOCUMENTS can cause trouble and are not designed to work with MOSS (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832771/en). Working with versioning you can download all files each time and use the MASTER/SUBDOCUMENTS functionality locally.. but is this best practice ? You can use the Wiki Page Library. Doing this all users can easily work on content at the same time. But if you like to have a highly formatted document-layout then it gets difficult. The standard wiki page does not have a highly formatted export to winword functionality. Are their any cool 3rd party Wikis that have this export functionality ? When talking about best practices.. what you would be best practice when having this requirement - to teamwork on large word documents? Thanks for y

Large document libraries with a custom user interface

We recently migrated our document management system to SharePoint (WSS 3.0) and I adapted my VB6 client application to search for and retrieve a list of documents from this new SharePoint library using the Lists web service. Although the total number of documents in this library is 90,000 at one site and over 145,000 at another, my VB6 application never retrieves more than 600-700 documents at a time. From reading white papers such as "Working with Large Lists in Office SharePoint Server 2007" (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=95450&clcid=0x409), it appears that if my custom user interface limits the number of items returned in a search of these large lists, that it may not be necessary to put these documents into folders. However, our current scanning software, KnowledgeLake Capture, by default places newly scanned documents into folders based on the year, month, day and hour, which means that these documents are placed in nested folders 4 levels deep.

There are also some 20 metadata fields on these document libraries that allow us to filter these document libraries so that search results will in most cases be limited to a few hundred items.

We acquired new servers (Windows Server 2008 with SQL Server 2008) to host our SharePoint libraries and we are running WSS 3.0 S

Document Conversion of large files

My MOSS 2007 environment fires OutOfMemory exceptions when attempt to launch a custom Document Converter on files larger then 50 MB (Video files) . Because my Document Converter is implemented by a standalone executable, I'm figuring these exceptions are fired by Sharepoint Work process, on downloading/uploading from/to temp folder, not by my custom converter.

If this is the case, can I apply any workarounds on server configuration ? I tried with /3GB switch without luck. Maybe SP1 will address this issue too ?

Is there a way to parse information in a word document and store them on a list (MOSS2007)? (Without

My current project requires me to parse through a Word document with tables that simulate a form. However Infopath isn't an available rescource for me. For example I'm to bring all information in the notes cell onto a list in sharepoint. Ultimately i'll be using a view to display that list through a webpart on a dashboard like interface on a sharepoint page. Is this possible? or is Info Path really the only way to go about this?

VS 2008, in addition to VSeWSS, has to be installed to the WSS3.0/MOSS2007 web server?

We just started to develop SharePoint Intranet by using WSS 3.0.  To get a first hand experience in developing SharePoint Web Parts in VS 2008, I plan to install VSeWSS to the web server where we installed WSS3.0, and MOSS2007 in the future. Do I still need to install VS 2008 to this web server, or I can develop SharePoint web parts from my workstation where VS 2008 was already installed?

how to set the site to open Calender or a document list (the home page)WSS3.0

Efficiently delete documents from large document library

I am using the SPWeb ProcessBatchData method (plus disabling the recycle bin while it runs) to delete all documents from a document library, but it still seems painfully slow to me. A document library with 5,300 documents and 2.7 GB took roughly 3 hrs & 40 min to delete all documents. I'm running SQL Server on a Xeon CPU 3.06 GHz, 4.75 GB RAM and SAN storage. Do you know if this performance is in the expected range for this delete operation? Or, if not, do you have any ideas what might be causing the bottleneck?

list of documents to be displyed on Home page from document library(MOSS2007)

i have a task to complete where i wan to display pdf documents from documents library on Home page. and also want to show a MORE link on the bottom when user click on MORE button should display list of all the documents or will redirect to document library.  This is in MOSS 2007.

Large document library is slow

We have a requirement to move our personnel files from a shared folder to Sharepoint and in the process attach some additional metadata fields. I have accomplished this via the Document Center template on SP 2010. In order to simplify the migration process, I have pre-created the folders (about 1,800) via the "Open with Explorer" option for the library - basically wrote a batch file to create the folders directly to the SP location. The 1,800 folders I have created are all blank - no files in them yet.

When I try to upload a file to any of these folders, the Upload Document dialog freezes after I click on the "Choose Folder" button when specifying the Destination Folder. It eventually comes back after a few minutes with my folder listing - but its incredibly slow. There are no documents uploaded yet - all I have are the 1,800 folders. How can I fix this? Is 1,800 too close to the mystical 2,000 folder/item limit for doc libraries? Can't I fix this with indexing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Working with SharePoint document libraries

Document libraries are collections of files that you can share with team members on a Web based on Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services. For example, you can create a library of common documents for a project, and team members can use their Web browsers to find the files, read them, and make comments. Users with Microsoft Office 2003 can check out and edit the files as if they resided on a local or network drive.

By default, your team Web site comes with a built-in document library named Shared Documents, which is listed on the Quick Launch bar as well as on the Documents and Lists page.

jQuery $(document).ready() and ASP.NET Ajax asynchronous postback

Many call it the ASP.NET jQuery postback problem, but using the technique below should make it no problem anymore. $(document).ready() isn't called after an asynchronous postback. What this means? You lose the functionality that should be executed within $(document).ready() after an UpdatePanel rendered its contents after an asynchronous postback.

SharePoint Document Workspaces for Developers

Office 2003 is being released this month, and a cast of supporting applications is already available. One of these is Windows SharePoint Services 2.0, the free team add-on for Windows Server 2003. If you're not familiar with SharePoint Services basics, take a look at What Developers Need to Know About Windows SharePoint Services. In this article, I'm going to drill into one key place where SharePoint and Office 2003 overlap: document workspaces

Upload a File to a SharePoint Document Library - Part I

The following helper class demonstrates a few techniques that allow documents to be uploaded to a SharePoint document library programmatically without using the API or a custom web service. You don't need to specify a document library name, and it will create any folders specified in the URL as required. File meta data will be updated if any properties are passed.

SharePoint document migration challenges when migrating files and folders

There are several challenges when migrating documents to Microsoft SharePoint. While these challenges can be overcome, they are a real pain if the migration source, content and file systems are not SharePoint friendly.

Persist large dataset across ASP.NET pages. No database

Can anyone give me suggestions on how to implement the following requirement?

1. A online wizard (step-by step operation) processes user requests across several ASP.NET pages.  The session data is stored in memory until the user submits the request.  Once the request is submitted, a XML file is created and the data are passed to XML.

# Case Study: The parent page has a "select" button.  Click "select" will pop up a child page.  The users can select 1000+ items from a datagrid in the child page.  Once the user clicks "confirm", the selected items in the child page will be populated to the selected item gridveiw in the parent page.  The user can keep selecting more in the child page and the selected items will be appended to the gridview in the parent page.

- What's the best way to extract strings from a text file and convert to a dataset in memory and then present it in a datagrid in UI?

- What's the best way to persist and manipulate a large dataset across pages?  Session? or ViewState? Can it be accomplished by LINQ?

The app doesn't interact with a DB.  Once the request is submitted, it will convert the in memory data to a XML file.  What technology can be used to accomplished this?&nb
